Arkansas has a minimum passenger age of 8 years old for motorcycles. There may be other states as well.

    Awesome!

I hear so many people say they cannot do this kind of stuff because of family responsibilities and such, which I can understand but it is refreshing to see you just pack those responsibilities on the bikes and head out. Life doesn't stop when you have children, you just bring them along, like my parents did with me and my sister..

Your kid will have some good stories to tell when he is older. Both me and my sister were born on the rodeo circuit. My dad rode bulls and broncs for a living for 16 years not to mention our 3 week trek through Mexico in a shoddy VW van LOL! Ya, we met more people getting stuck in the sand than anywhere else! :lol3

I am Lovin this RR already!

And on another interesting note, we lived in Davis for a couple years when I was really young. I think we were there around 1980-82...

    :huh

And unfortunately not everyone gets it. There are a few hens in the neighborhood that actually took offense to the article. Go figure.....

    36 hours til departure....

Hi Adventure Trio! GSWayne and I are always happy to see the F650GS out on the road on another adventure (it's been up to Portland, so it knows its way up the coast :D). Have a great trip!

We met on Monday May 22 at Denny's in Aberdeen, Washington. I was on the GS and my wife on the Versys. So far it has been a great trip report.

We are still looking for real estate in Washington and Oregon. Hope you made it home OK. Rich

OK, so after being home for a week I have finally had time to sort through photos and stories of the trip.

We laid out our gear, clothes, camping kit, etc., removed some things, and removed some things again. It was a bit of a challenge as we had planned to camp and motel along the way. We would have saved all the room and about 38lbs if we didn't camp but then we would give up the opportunity to meet people..........which was the whole point of the trip. And with 3 of us, one being 7 years old, there were a few things we couldn't leave without. Baseball gloves, check, kite, check, night time blanket, check....

And after it was all loaded.....keep in mind that my back seat is full of Jack's gear as I transport it to school to pick him up.

We picked up our 7 year old from his last day of school with fully loaded bikes with a destination of Benbow California. (Near Garberville) 248 miles

It's 92 degrees as we suit up, so time is of the essence. Jack doesn't mind long rides, but he does mind roasting in a motorcycle suit in a parking lot.....

    And we're off.....

So about 45 minutes out of Davis my passenger tells me through the autocom that he is hot and thirsty and would like to take a break. It's all about keeping the big guy happy in the heat so we pulled of in Esparto at a run down market to grab something cold. As we were taking off our gear I soon realized that there was a bee that had flown in to Jack's sleeve and it was just sitting there......not for long. It stung him in the arm as we tried to get it out. We got the jacket off and after a few tears had a anti sting patch from the first aid kit to sooth the pain.......and a root beer from the market.

He's tough and soon we were back on the road.

There were a few thunder clouds looming about. We kept our eye on this one as it seemed to be conveniently moving towards our destination. We weren't worried about riding in the rain, but it was the first day and we were still getting used to the weight. I didn't want to have wet roads as a factor so early in the trip.

It never did rain on us, but we were right behind it. We kept running through puddles that were only a few minutes old.

As I mentioned, we were heading towards Garberville. Coincedently it was also the weekend of the Redwood run, a big Harley event. We stopped in Lucerne (near Clearlake) for an ice cream and lunch and parked with a sea of Harleys. Most folks were nice although there were many that didn't even acknowledge that we were on 2 wheels. Apparently it's not cool to wear jackets with sleeves, high viz gear, or full face helmets with some people. Oh well, we were just happy to have departed on our 16 day trip.

We made our next "rest stop" was Willits CA for fuel. Jack started getting tired and was dozing off a bit. He is attached to me with a child riding belt and surrounded with a RevPak U shaped duffle so he can't fall off. It was time for more sugar to perk him up and we only had about an hour to go.

This is also where I discovered by leaking rear Ohlins. With only 3000 miles on it and having it custom sprung for my weight as well as gear, passenger, and riding type, I wasn't happy to see it weeping oil badly. Not dripping on the ground yet, but give it time. Onward to Benbow.....

We arrived at the Benbow Inn around 6:45pm. I had made reservations at hotels for the 1st 2 nights as I knew they would be long days in the saddle. This is a place that my wife has visited since childhood so it was a bit of a history lesson for Jack and I. We met some other riders heading to the Redwood run and everyone was cool. The Ohlins was now officially dripping oil on the ground.....shit!

I called Ohlins the next morning and ordered a new shock. This time with an even stiffer spring as I didn't want to take any chances later in the trip. I had them ship it to Ride West BMW in Seattle where I already had an appointment to have new tires installed on Sandy's F650. We ran out of time before we left and we knew we would be staying in Seattle for a few days.

We were up early with the sound of Harleys buzzing up and down the road. Downstairs for breakfast and then load the bikes. Ohlins was shipping my replacement 2 day air to Seattle and all was going to work out. I kept a watchful eye on the shock but could tell it was getting a bit softer as we rode.

Our destination for today was Brookings Oregon.

We had to stop at the home of Big Foot.

Jack really dug hanging out in the tree

Our ride through the redwoods and up the coast was stellar.

I had been running my POV helmet camera on and off during this trip. Jack wanted to hold the main recording unit that has a small viewing screen and to operate the record/stop controls. Apparently my video operator fell asleep and I felt the tug and separation of the camera head from the velcro mount on my helmet, followed by a radio call from Sandy through the auto com "he dropped the camera!!" Flashers on, pull over, and she says "I'll go get it" Down the freeway shoulder she ran watching cars, trucks, semi trucks, and motorcycles all seeming to dodge the camera system. She was able to retrive it.

It was still in 1 piece. Scuffed a little, but it still worked!

Jack thought I was going to be mad and was apologizing over and over. I told him that it was all part of the trip and would make a good story. Funny what vacation time will do for your outlook.....

An hour later we reached Brookings. I have stayed at this Best Western hotel before..........all rooms face the ocean and are about $120 a night for a large room. Not really economy class but we needed to spread out, use the wifi and do a little laundry.

    Priceless....

    More later.....:D

Up early again.....me to check in with the office and Sandy to update the website and get some writing done. We let Jack sleep in as our destination was Astoria if we wanted to burn the miles and hours, or somewhere in between if we made stops along the way.

    North we go......

It was a cold day of riding with the occasional few drops of rain. We pressed on through the varied scenery and did not stop except to eat lunch and get fuel.

As we approached Newport Oregon we saw signs for a state campground. Sandy was pushing to camp and Jack was looking forward to another hotel with a pool. We told him he'd meet more kids if we camped and he allowed us to pull in a check it out. :evil

We pulled up to the Ranger kiosk and asked about available sites. The girl in the booth said there was 1 left in the entire park. Although she wasn't supposed to "hold" it for us while we checked it out, she said it would be marked sold so no one else could grab it. As we rode in we saw lots of families and kids playing (as we all remember as kids ourselves) and I joked with Jack on the autocom that "I don't see any kids to play with here". He replied with a "yeah right, let's get our spot and get set up" and that's what we did......or I should say, that is what Sandy and Jack did while I went back to pay for the site and then in to town for some food and whiskey.

Here is what I found when I returned

I had to go to 3 places to find food, beer, and whiskey for the night. I forgot how easy it is to buy alcohol in California.

Jack decided to use the guy method of determining which clothes were clean and what was dirty

The jury is still out on that one....

    And then dinner

We met one of the camp hosts that rode Goldwings in a previous life. Interesting guy with lots of stories and seemed to take a liking to us. Every time he made his rounds he would stop and have another ride story that was always entertaining.

As it started to get dark we stoked the fire, roasted some marshmellows and hit the hay for some much needed rest. It rained a bit that night but let up before we left.

As we were packing up we noticed a few of the other campers nearby watching our every move. When we were done loading the bikes one of the guys came over and said "we were all betting wether or not it would all fit".

Some artwork by Jack with the bungee cords.....I was wondering where they all went

Next stop, a surprise visit to Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park for Jack.....

We departed the campsite by 9:30am on day 4 and headed in to town to find a breakfast spot. We couldn't pass up a place called Pig n Pancake. We pulled in to grab something that would stick to our ribs for the next few hours.

Then it was east to Corvalis Oregon to catch highway 5 north to Grand Mound Washington. Our goal was to avoid major interstate highways as this is where we don't like to be when traveling with Jack. We bit the bullet and rode the 2 hour ride hoping that the high viz gear, lights, and attentiveness would prevail. It did and we were soon rolling in to the parking lot of suburbia hell. Jack by the way did not know we were going here. We wanted to surprise him with a cool kids place that he could run it out.

What a shock to our system after being in mostly remote rural areas meeting other like minded people on similar journies. This was minivan, beat down your husband, John and Kate +8, screaming kids hell.

Jack however was speachless while watching the waterpark activities through the window. I was checking in trying not to go in to shock with all of the activity. Sandy took one look at me and knew I was in trouble. This was so far from our scene.......

Soon we were checked in to our room, I was once again in search of snacks and whiskey (a common thread in this trip). We all suited up to head down to the pool/waterpark. After 2 hours of swimming and sliding we went to dinner and then off to bed.

I convinced the hotel manager to let us park up front so our bikes were not left out in the lot. He allowed us to park on the sidewalk near the enterance to the hotel. I peeked out the window of our room around midnight to find people taking turns sitting on the metric cruiser parked next to our GS's. I was glad that we had our ugly, bug smeared, muddy bikes that no one would want to be seen sitting on. :evil

In the morning we had the bikes loaded and almost ready to go before Jack woke up. We had a quick breakfast and bid farewell to our suburban roots. Next stop Seattle....

Jack helps get the last few items strapped down. He's getting pretty good at this...

Again on highway 5 to make a beeline to the city. Nothing too exciting on this part except for the teenage driver that almost ran us in to the center divider. :eek1 Stay alert....

We got to the hotel around 2pm and were met by curious hotel employees wondering what we were up to. Not being a dick to the bellmen got us a free parking spot right up in front where the bikes could be watched 24/7. I only say that because we watched alot of folks snapping there fingers and barking orders at these guys....totally <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><meta We grabbed the boxes and bags off the bikes and got them to our room to relax for a bit before heading off to explore Seattle. It was Monday and Ride West BMW was closed. I checked the status of my UPS shipment from Ohlins and it was on time for Tuesday delivery.

It was nice to be off the road for a while......

The next day was spent with me shuttling the bikes back and forth to the dealer. The F650 for new tires, and mine for the new shock. Everything was installed and I was comfortably able to carry everything including the kitchen sink with my even more heavy duty setup. :D

I joined the rest of the trio downtown for the usual sites.

    Couldn't pass this up

Then to finish up some laundry before we leave......

    Day 6

We were up early to depart the city before traffic stacked up too bad. The plan was to head north on 5 and cut east to highway 9 to enter Canada at Sumas Washington.

First we had to stop at the Pike street market to get a few pics....

And to sugar up the big guy for the ride to Vancouver.....

Off to the border we go......

    More later-
