I agree. After last year and what seemed a conservative, but promising start, I certainly didn't expect only 4 bikes.

I think it all boils down to money Tony, especially this year... the Africa Race is almost Dakar money (entry fee wise), and while you do get a corking route for your money, not a lot of amateur riders can afford €13,000+ for one event?

Heroes-Legend was the same this year - only around half the number of competitors compared to last year...

There is a certain economy of scale, and I wonder how long the "smaller" rallies can last w/o meeting it. :uhoh

The already bad news gets even worse :cry
The Senegalese competitor never showed up for the event for some reason, so he's out leaving only the 3 Italians in the race :eek1:eek1:eek1

But here some pics anyways from stage 1:

I imagine the 'raid' classification is like the 'bivouac-bivouac' route on Heroes-Legend - that is a non-competitive class for essentially stock vehicles, that follow the assistance route and possibly some of the easier stages (but not against the clock)...

Last year cars and trucks in "raid" section follow easier tracks or routes.
The same for the bikes just to Agadir. Then they follow us on the race tracks.

Raid section drivers hasn't FIM card-license and aren't classified at all. Non competitive. Just to fun themselves.

    Colour commentary spot:

"Well folks, it's certainly shaping up to become a tight battle for the leading (and only) three moto competitors in the first ever, penultimate second annual Africa Ride...

Yes viewers, there's no quarter asked and none given between the "thong" of competitors in their bout for supremacy... In fact the field is so tight... you could literally "throw a blanket over them"! Well, that sound's pretty much like they've got the bivouac side of things set up any way... :lol3 "

The 3rd edition of the Africa Eco Race is on the right track … For this exceptional human and sports adventure, in the heart of Africa, do not miss the occasion…

Scrutineering will begin on December 27th, 2010. Then, competitors will start for 12 days of intense race by crossing Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal.
One more time, and for the biggest pleasure of competitors, René Metge will chose the route.

The finish will take place on January 9th, 2011 in Dakar, in the purest tradition, on the shore of the Lac Rose.

Ready to enter the race ?

Looks as if the low numbers from this year's rally has not put them off from continuing the rally at the same time as Dakar.
