    Ogre and Sage,

Noted on the shield detents, and this has been brought to AFX's attention. I am taking the liberty of speaking for them, but....I think it is unlikely. It is not a simple change, because the parts involved are molded, and remaking the tooling is very expensive. The molds for the shield are more simple, but polycarbonate tooling, and shields in general are probably still beyond the threshold of pain.

Generally, product managers are very, very reluctant to make running changes to products. First reaction is that customers will be stoked, but in practice it throws the distribution process into chaos. Even if you push to fast-track them, R+D for molded parts is about 6 months -usually much longer - just to be ready for production, and them another 3-6 months before they ship. Nobody wants the "old" version, so the value plummets (which adds to the cost). Everything stops briefly while people try to figure out which version they are getting. Any sane person would think it was straightforward, but in practice it is a nightmare. This is why, often, on the occasions where running changes are made, they are done quietly, without telling anyone.

Usually the product manager just logs in a brief to fix it for the next version.

I cringe every time I read these complaints, but....on balance, they are still a really good helmet. To keep things in context, AFX (and Fly) have sold a bazillion of them, as a %age the complaints are small in number. They have a couple minor issues, but overall they work well, and they put a DS helmet in reach of almost anyone. IMO, it is still the best entry level DS helmet (by far).

    Hope that helps.

This probably all comes down to personal preference, but....
I've worn Shoei helmets for 20+ years. I've always worn XL. But my latest shoei is a Hornet Dual Sport style and is VERY snug in an XL. The sizing charts would indicate that the AFX-39 runs slightly larger than the Shoei. Can anyone confirm? I intend to buy the helmet, but I dont want to get an XL if I should instead be ordering an XXL.
    Thanks.

    Hi BT.

They actually run large, not small, so if you are an XL in other helmets you might be an L in these. But the best way to know is to measure your head and use the size chart here:

You can PM me if you would like any additional assistance.

    Hope that helps.

    BT,

I can confirm what Brian posted...the best thing to do is measure your head.

I've always worn a "Large", in the Arais that I've owned, and my FX-39 is a "Medium".

I got my AFX-39 last Monday as a birthday gft from my wife. I accidentally on purpose sent her a link to Atomic Moto's site open to the page with an XL Silver.

I measured my head and was going to buy the large, but at a local dualsport event, I got to try a large and it was kind of tight and pushed on the back of my neck. I found a friend who had just purchaesd an XL and tried it. It fit good. I wear a XXL HJC CLX and thought I should get an XL, but measuring my head kept putting me right in the middle of Med and Lg. I couldn't even get the medium on. The Lg, as I said pushed into the back of my neck and felt a bit too snug.

I missed the deal on Silver for $93 back in May, but my BD isn't till June.:lol3

Free shipping just made up the difference any way.

Thanks for the phone call Brian and your help with selecting.

My only question is: Why so much strap? Who on this earth has a 24" chin. What do I do with all the excess that flaps annoyingly in the wind? I have it pulled all the way snug and there is no extra strap. Cuttin and remelting the end seems like a soultion.

BTW did any one else get a huge chuckle out of the Chinese translation owners guide?:lol3

Re the strap.....my guess is that the helmet was designed for D-rings, and the quick release was added later. As such, the integration works, but not as well as if it had been designed with a quick release.

By the way, sunshields are like, totally sold out man. No resupply in sight. Far out, man, in both the literal and figurative sense.

    Thanks

Basically, your impression is correct....the AFX is a lemon yellow. The Fly Trekker version is a true hi-viz.

    Hope that helps.

Here is a "real" cell phone picture. It is on top of my TourMaster Intake 2 jacket. It is kind of between a regular yellow and a hi-viz.

My buddy has the Fly Trekker in Hi Viz. It is freakin' HI VIZ. Sorry, he didn't ride today so I don't have a pic for you.

Received mine today. It's not exactly Hi Vis but very close. Very nice comfortable helmet. The rachet system is great but the best part of all is the comfort. Nice and soft microfiber....much more plush than I would have thought for a 100 bucks. I usally wear a tight large but this fits just right....between a L & XL.

The paint is a bit thin in a couple of spots around the rim but overall nice quality.

    Quality VS Value= 5 stars

OK.....I read this whole post and have a question. :eek1

Currently I wear a Shoei Hornet size Large that fits snug but comfortable as a proper helmet should, however a bit tight to remove.

I just ordered & it has shipped (before finding this informative post!) an FX-39DS Medium as my head measures 59 3/4 and is round.

So.....should I give it a try....or.....refuse delivery (FedEx) and pay for restocking ....and order the Fly in a Large? :huh

    I know....it's kind of a subjective thing....Thanks

Hi, I don't see on the Atomic moto website if you have stock of FX 39 Camo Marpat size S?
    Not stocking the Camo editions?

    I have a Shoei RF-1000 size Small. 56cm head.
Would the AFX FX-39 Small be good fit?

    Thanks.

Hi Dave. Camo versions are here: http://www.atomic-moto.com/AFX-FX-39-Dual-Sport-Helmet-Camo_p_344.html

AFA sizing, is that 56cm spec your actual measurement, or the size on the Shoei? If that is your spec, you are probably a size S.

I have an AFX FX-39, I don't have the documentation anymore, are there any special care instructions for washing the liner? Can I just throw them in the washing machine/dryer?

    Thanks
