    Hi Guys,

I have and '84 G/S and have partly pulled down the engine (suspicious noise - seems to be timing chain). Whilst doing that it became clear I need the valve guides done (etc).

The question is; Who can I get to do the heads (and maybe more, since the bike hasn't seen a real airhead mechanic in a very long time).

The bike has been tortured by the shop in Hornsby that has BMW logos on it, and I have heard Motohansa are good but will charge really heavily, so who really knows these bikes and how do I get in touch with them?

I am happy to wait. I am happy to ship/travel to the right guy, but obviously local would be better. I am near Manly in Sydney and love this bike.

    Thanks for your help.

You don't really need an airhead specialist to replace the valve guides. Any reputable engine machine shop should be able to do it.
I know people in Brisbane that would do it, but there must be some in Sydney too.

Motohansa are only expensive if you know someone who is as good and cheaper , but it sounds like you dont.

I have sent them a drive shaft and a final drive over from Adelaide , they stuck to the quote and work was perfect .

Even with shipping it was cheaper than the local crooks and bodgers were quoting.

If you need the head done I would order the parts from Motobins first - their complete kit is less than BMW Oz charge for one exhaust valve.

Then take it to any decent auto head shop, will a list of exactly what you want done.

I have had great difficulty finding anyone other than Motohansa who can do the specialist machining / repair with any degree of competance, so I recon you are just going to have to lump it- no sense in trying to save a few bucks and getting a back yard bodger to stuff it up.

Is Canberra an option? If so, PM me and I will give you details. He is an airhead specialist.

Also a non-airhead guy local to you - Ashbury, as I recall.

There are a couple of options near Brisvegas. Ray Peake is one name that comes to mind. I'm not sure if he's the one not too far from Nimbin..if not someone else might have that fellas name. Ask in Ozzie regional forum.

My when I bought my G/S it had been bodged by one Bryant, a self styled Airhead specialist from Canberra - I wouldnt go within a mile of him.

Back in my airhead days i rebuilt my 100/7, buying my parts from don wilson who was THE bmw guru in nsw. I left him with the heads for new guides to be fitted and importantly, reamed to fit the old but still good valves, valve/seat facing, con rod small end line reaming etc. He was a great bloke to deal with and was was quite up front in telling me that all his machining work was forwarded on to Duncan Foster Engine Reconditioning at blacktown. This was 1984, don is long retired and sold his business which is now Motohansa, and yes you heard right , the owner is quite adept at making your money his. Oh, Duncan Foster are now in two locations and that leaves me wondering where "Motopansya" send their machining work to (and whack on a FAT margin)? All the best with your rebuild.:*sip*
