Day 1: Friday September 1, 2017 (Labor Day Weekend)

I roll the bike out of its dark lair into the burning sun.

The tires start out as a Pirelli Scorpion Rally front with about 200 miles on it and a Mefo Super Explorer rear with maybe 2,500 miles on it - including last years run on the GCBAR. I like the front knobby so far, but have never run anything this aggressive on this bike. I have no idea how long it will last.

    [IMG]........[IMG]

The bike is gonna hit 50K today. I'm still in love.:raabia

I get spurred into the right direction.

I share the road with others for maybe the first 100 miles or so, before jumping off onto dirt roads.

Seventeen Mile Road is NOT! But, 13.9 Mile Road just doesn't have the same ring to it, huh?

What it is, is a fun, twisty, desert roller coaster...

...that will help me get re-acquainted with the handling of the loaded 990.

There are 2 crossings of the Big Sandy River on Signal Road, but by taking 17 Mile Rd I only have to do 1. The easier/shorter of the 2.
The water was low today and the crossing was super easy.

I take Alamo Crossing Rd to I-40 and then the old US 66.

It was getting a little toasty...

I'm drinking water at an alarming rate. Cool Springs Station wasn't... cool.

This was probably the most fun section of Route 66.

It takes me into Oatman, Arizona - The official start of the Nevada Backcountry Discovery Route.

The burros here will trip you, bite you, kick you, steal your ice cream, and block the doorways for free A/C.

Oatman is just a gimmicky tourist trap kinda place. I feel bad for any rider starting this route from the north and looking forward to this place as a destination.
There were lots of motorcycles here, but I doubt any of them were headed in my direction.

I hope you get to. It's definitely NOT Flatistan. I hope you can get there in cooler weather and before the snow starts flying.

It was really getting HOT, so I stopped for an early dinner to cool down in Bullhead City. I had been drinking so much water I couldn't finish my meal! That never happens!

I'm not sure why the NVBDR doesn't start in Laughlin, NEVADA. Neither Oatman, nor Silver Creek Road to get there, are all that impressive.

But Christmas Tree Pass outside of Laughlin would be a worthy start. It was more fun before they came through here with a blade and "fixed" it.

I should mention I'm doing my own version of the Nevada Backcountry Discovery Route - I reserve the right to change it as I please.
For more information about this route, go here: http://ridebdr.com/NVBDR

Based on current conditions reports and the extreme heat I skipped some of the off-road sections like here.
I can see no valid reason why I might wish to bounce along a deep sandy track skirting a fence line at slow speed
with me and the bike overheating, when I would rather be cruising at 70 mph on one of my favorite highways.

I rarely get a hotel room on the first night of a trip, but I was seriously considering it in order to get out of the heat by mid-afternoon.
The rooms in Primm were advertised much cheaper than Pahrump. I tried booking a room at dinner, but it was a classic bait and switch.
When the rate ended up being nearly 4 times as much as the advertised price, I decided I'll just be putting down miles until nightfall.

After Primm, I went through a pass where the temps dropped to almost 95. It felt cool enough that I was tempted to just camp here...

...but I continued on towards Pahrump.

Now or the next couple weeks might be good. When I went the temps in the lower deserts were 105ish and higher places up north like Elko were in the mid-90s. It was often much warmer on the bike out in the sun, of course. Snow could definitely start flying in October. The heat was more than just uncomfortable, it was probably dangerous and unwise at times.

    Hey dave6253! :wave

... awesome ride report, as usual ... :thumb

re: best time to do the NVBDR ... weather in Jarbidge tomorrow: 39F high/24F low, snow showers ... :lol3

... we watched the NVBDR movie DVD at the clubhouse a few months ago
and they were talking about doing one half in the summer (Jarbidge) and
going back to do the southern half in the winter ... :dunno

... now that I think about it, the DVD guys had a miserable time
getting to Jarbidge ... snow, after dark, freezing ... I think
some of them got into a truck to get the last few miles ... :ricky

I stopped to let this Jeep pass through a deep silt berm first. After watching it get cross-rutted and sliding sideways
through the stuff, I waited for the dust to settle and went around on the track to the left.

Little did I know I this was the ONLY other person I would see on the dirt sections for the first 3.5 days.

Most of the riding was pretty easy and smoother than I expected, but this muddy ditch concerned me. I easily cleared it, though.
