Pronghorn are the fastest land mammal in North America. I've had a race or two with them, much like yours, one of which I clocked a herd at 60mph and in their instinct to keep pursuers from getting alongside nearly took my buddy Jim, who was behind me, into the ditch. So good to share similar experiences from the road less traveled.

    Great RR, Dave! :clap

Stellar. Adding the chapters with the group along and their portrait shots was a nice twist. And I especially love the signature hand held onboard shots!

So many cool finds and interesting side routes in this one.

Wow, has it been 40 RR's? You really have the art of the Ride Report dialed in. And you make them seem so easy... for being so much hard work.

Thanks again. Always such a great motivation to get out and bank some turns.

Hi Dave!! Another RR, impressive as every single one. The ride itself must be really good, but your story telling makes it even better.
Thanks for sharing it, amazing photography skills... did you change anything in your equipment lately? I've been thinking really hard about going mirrorless to make my set up smaller. Maybe an Xt-2 or Xt-20 from Fujifilm... light, good lenses, any thoughts on this direction? Right now I need an upgrade, as my camera end lenses are old, not giving me the results I want. And buying new lenses for an old Nikon D-5000 just doesn't make any sense to me. Going full frame seams to be overkill, money and size wise. As I said, thinking really hard on the mirrorless way.

Cheers from Brazil, man. Hope one day I could ride those really special dirty roads in Gran Canyon; or to show you some places in South America...

Awesome ride report and pictures as always. Thanks for sharing your adventure and showing me a part of the country I will most likely never see myself. I say most likely because I do plan on taking some trips out west and seeing at least some of the stuff you have posted in your many ride reports.

    Hi @arjones.:wave

I'm hoping to be headed your way in 5 years. I'll let you know.

So you want a look into my camera bag, huh?
This is how I carry them in the tankbag. The corner of the bag stays unzipped for quick access for my small camera.

I usually carry 4 big heavy lenses for my dSLR, but really tried to constrain myself for this trip to lighten my load.
The tankbag and panniers were only 3/4 full this time. My dSLR is an old Pentax K-5 IIs. I used a 15 mm Limited prime,
a fast 50 mm prime, and a 55-300 zoom. I carried my small tripod and detachable neck strap. That's it for the dSLR.
Most mirrorless systems wouldn't be much smaller. My small camera is used for all the moving shots, and MANY of
the shots throughout the day. It's a very old Olympus PEN ePL-1 with a 17 mm (~35 mm equivalent) pancake lens,
and a cheap body cap fisheye lens. Only the 15 mm and 50 mm primes for the dSLR are new gear. I also carried the
Contour ROAM helmet camera, but only used it on the ridge road for video.

I really wouldn't know what mirrorless system to recommend as I haven't used any of them. If I was buying now,
I would be looking at the Sony a7 or even an Olympus PEN F. I've heard good things about the Fuji cameras as well.
Perhaps I would be happier with the Pentax K1 fullframe with smaller lenses?

Darn good shootin' there pardner - monochrome and color.

Thank you for another enjoyable ride report. I did 6-day solo back-country trip last month to sample some of the Nevada Pony Express Trail. It was much like you described. You have to want to be alone to enjoy the desolation Nevada has to offer.

As always an incredible ride report then you add a little more interest to it with the addition of some of my favorite people at the Hot Springs.

Thanks for taking the time to share your adventures and photos with us. :clap

Hello Dave, I've finally discovered your ride reports and words don't do them justice. Superb photography and narrative, inspiring riding and destinations, innovative camera techniques - all descriptions fall short of the all around excellence. Thanks for your huge body of work and I look forward to reading through more. And I'm already copying some of your techniques like shooting-while-riding!

Well thanks Dave, but my wimpy day rides are like the Cliff Notes version compared to your epic journeys. I love how you include the historical details along the routes, outstanding!
