I got a pretty late start...

and raced out of the Sonoran Desert...

It wasn't long before I found proof...

I had entered the Mojave Desert...

As the Joshua Trees only grow in the Mojave.

Before you all get jealous of our sunny weather and assume it was warm. Let me tell you, I froze my ass off!
The reason for the late start? I was laying in my warm bed dreading the cold and willing it to warm up a little.

There was fresh snow on the low elevation mountains.

It even snowed in Phoenix yesterday! Yes. In Phoenix, Arizona!
I'm pretty sure that means Hell officially froze over.

After the marathon tour up to Alaska last summer I'm looking forward to a more relaxed pace.
That, and the fact it was cold and I was on worn Heidenau tires kept me from venturing up to Death Valley.

I stopped to walk across the new bridge for the first time.

The elevated view of Hoover Dam was cool.

I head north along the Lakeshore Drive.

I want to see the sights of The Valley of Fire.

There was almost no other traffic, but I kept seeing Park Rangers, so I had to keep the speed in check on these fun roads.

The occasional view of Lake Mead popped up. I ran down a dirt road to the edge of the water where I found a cool spot to camp.
I almost set up there alone, but I had planned to see the Valley of Fire by sunset.

It looks as though the mountains ahead are getting pounded.

Yes they do. The first few there are from Highway 93 near Wikieup, just like the article you linked to says. Parts of Arizona are Mojave Desert, not Sonoran Desert.

I get to the east entrance self-pay station for the Valley of Fire State Park. After seeing I can pay at the campground I get back onto the bike to hurry over to find a campsite.
I hoped to get out onto the scenic drive for sunset photos. I had about 1 hour of daylight left. Unfortunately Mr Yuasa didn't want to cooperate.

Well this sux. There were some other tourists in the area, so I got an opportunity to meet new people as I begged for a jump start.
I met a cool motorcyclist, also from Phoenix, who was there in a sedan and in no time we had the bike running.

With new priorities, I grabbed a nice campsite and hoped I could get the bike into town tomorrow. I settled for photography from the campground.

It was a nice clear evening with a bright moon. I met a nice young couple camping nearby. Scott and Chasey(sp?) were there with Alaskan plates. I wished I had traveled more when I was their age.

    Goodnight.

It was a chilly night. In the morning my new buddy Scott helped me jump start the bike. The battery was dead.
I headed for the park exit with a new priority to get to Las Vegas 50 something miles away to hunt for new electron storage.

I was realized how disappointed I would be to miss seeing the park after coming so far to get here. Just before the park exit
I changed my mind and headed back into the park. Shitty running bike be damned!

The scenic road was just that.

I had this fun stuff all to myself.

I parked at the top of a hill in case the bike needed a rolling start.

Satisfied I had seen the park, I headed west to the exit.
