The rider is question rode 1000 miles off-road in 24 hours in a "Dusty-Butt" version of the Iron-Butt, back in 2004. Not many people that have done that, I guess.

For the early birds: The first spectator point is South about 3.7km south of the highway on the R43 at Botrivier - you will need to be there early, like at 05h45am

    Coordinates are:
    34°15'46.51"S *19°10'54.48"E

The bikes will be coming from the south and turning east at this junction. For safety reasons, Please do not drive/ride with the bikes on the liaison

I will post some other viewpoints in a couple of hours

Each rider has a trunk to live out of every day. His life's possessions and spares are stored in this. This trunk is moved by the organization to the next bivouac.

Nice looking bikes...hope they stay that way but somehow I doubt it!

Neil, do we have anybody there to tell us how long is the 1st day roadbook? It does not look long enough, but it would be good to know :ear

First stage is 582km long, and is pretty much a special in its own right. I think there is less than 5% on paved surfaces. The special was shortened to only 52km but still takes 4.5 hours according to the pre-runners. :huh

I think many riders will be coming in after dark tomorrow.

This is going to be good :freaky , especially if people are forced to drive during low light conditions. Some of them seem prepared to do so anyways :evil

Okay, here are the start orders, and time for the liaison as well as the special for stage 1:

The guys have 05h36 minutes to reach the start of the special without penalty.

Apparently there are some stop-and-goes that they are not allowed to slip past on pain of penalties.

The organisation thinks they will take 4-5 hours to finish the special, so with a 5-6 hour liaison, riders will be on the road at least 9 hours. Slower guys will be 10-15 hours

And another view of the campsite where they have been sleeping. Looks nice hey?? I LOVE South Africa.

While we wait for the route, which I believe will only be available after the riders have left, those of you wanting to chase and spectate had better get a move on. Here are another two options:

Option 1) Go the Malgas Pontoon ferry, I believe the riders will be passing through there from about 07:30-8 am. You'll be able to talk to them on the ferry as well! Best to approach from the R319 side. Drive Carefully - You could meet lots of bikes on the way!

Option 2) Drive up to Laingsburg to see the start of the special stage. You need to be there by 11 am to see the first bikes off just after that.

GPS Coords: 33 11.665S 20 51.235E Just over the main bridge from the Shell (?) Grudge and one-stop.
I've marked 2 good spectator points, and the riders route in Blue. Keep off this route please!!

    {edit: I will post the *pic after 6:20 am}

15 minutes to lift off!! :clap :clap

well, with those long liasons, and long days, I can see how 1200ADV and a 950ADV would come in handy :D looking forward to seeing what the tracks are like.
