We wanted to go to "hyvää Suomi" this summer. Did the planning, bought a map of Poland and the Baltic-States. Checked the ferry from Helsinki to Travemünde, was close to book it, when Tina saw the weather forecast and sayed "NO - i don't wanna go into that rain and cold".

So we decided to give Finland a chance and start to ride east first. So the final decission should be made in Slovenia.

For the GPS-Users - here is the GPX file of this tour. (use it as orientation if you want to travel in this area).

    View attachment 187470

    DAY 1 (Penzberg - Kobarid)
we started relaxed round noon on small roads east to take the highway at Irschenberg. Heavy traffic forced us to leave the highway at Rosenheim. On small roads again along lake Chiemsee. Short before Austria back to the highway. We bought a "pickerl" (Dam Austria - want money for using Autobahn - i hate this).

Near Villach we jumped into Slovenia - This area is so beautyful - The Soca-River - fantastic. We spent the night near Kobarid.

    DAY 2 (Kobarid - Celje)
Crossing SLO fron West to East - Tolmin - Kranj - Velenje - Ending up near Maribor in Celje. But i know - i should not bor you with too much text - u wanna see the pics. :-) Here we go

Behind Tolmin along a nice valley

    Dobrodosli - Hello

In the north of Slovenia we had to go to Austria again for some 15 km. Here's the view to Slovenian montains.

    Celje - late afternoon

    DAY 3 (Celje - Ogulin)
Leaving Celje we followed some very beautyful valleys and rivers. We went south direction Croatia - Weatherforecast for north europe was still bad - so we decide to go south now.

    River Save

Nice old bidge - Very nice bar nearby

    the bar

At the end of the day we ended up in Ogulin. The Touristinfo informed us about witches and places to sleep - we found both.

here we spent 2 nights - It's even a good restaurant.

    Day 4 (Ogulin - Senj - Ogulin)

Plitvice lakes we did the year before - so we made a little ride to see the sea.

    Island Krk

    great water - isn't it?

beautyful beaches - problem, you will not find much beaches along the coast - it's very "Rocky".

    DAY 5 (Ogulin - Imotski)

So more south we go - We decide to make some km and went on the highway. We passed Velebit (see Damirs report).
Near Zadar it started to be very hot. Highway ends some km behind Splitt.
Normal road takes us to Imotski direct at the border to Bosnia.

Krka - river and national park

View from our Hotel in Imotski direction Makarska.

Ok - enough for the beginning - as we came home yesterday from this tour - give me a little time to continue. :-)

    have fun

    And on we go :D

    DAY 6 (Imotski - Niksic)

The Montenegro - days (Crna Gora). We passed Bosnia this day south of Mostar, because we visited most of Mostar (and Sarajevo) last year. Imotski - Stolac - Trebinje - Niksic is the Tour Outline.

    Here the pics.

Behind Stolac - if you look close you can see a forest-fire at the hill (you see nothing - your are too close to your monitor)

After Trebinje you pass a beautyful valley following a deep blue river

After a while you go up - towards Montenegro

    view short before the border-crossing

After the border - Niksic in the background.

We found one Motel (and one Hotel) in the town. Reception told us that they have a water restriction at the moment - we may get water at 20:00h. And we got it then, later water was closed again.

    DAY 7 (Niksic - Zabljak)

We went north to reach Tara-canyon (highest canyon in Europe - second in the world).

    Durmitor

    Tara river

    DAY 8 (round Zabljak)

fucking WATER RESTRICTION - Tina get angry :ruskie You may know how bad it is for a lady having no chance for a shower after a hot day on the bike.

We tried to reach the ground of the Tara by bike - we took a gravel-road down from 1500m to 600m - no chance - we didn't reach the river.

    View-point at 1900m

at a side canyon - here we could reach the ground and go up at the other side.

locals called this "Panorama-road" - here we went down on gravel

Deepest point we reached - some farms there. Typical hay storage.

road was a dead-end. Here on the way back up.

After passing the side-canyon - view to we side we came from

and view down - no river to see

After some more km we reached gravel again. We followed some roads - had lunch and went on to Durmitor mountains.

On the road up to Durmitor

    realy great views

between the two highest points of the road

    View down direct. Zabljak

    last view.

A Story nearby: In the middle of the town we meet 5 Africa Twins - Polish number-plate - Africa Twin Poland T-Shirt. I stopped and asked them if I know them from the internet. He replied maybe - I asked if he knows Sambor - he said "Yes, it's a friend - on his way to China at the moment". The other was from Bratislava - and a member on my webpage. :-) We talked a lot - until they moved on, on their way to Albania.

    DAY 9 (Zabljak - Kolasin)

We followed the Tara river to Mojkovac and then the main road to Bijelo Polje. On to Berane and Plav to watch the lake.

We stopped a view km outside Plav - suddenly a jung guy (farmer) came to us and asked if he can take a photo of the bike. We where suprised and told him "yes, no problem". He took some pics with his mobile - asked if we want to come with him for a drink.

From Plav we could reach Albania on a gravel road, but we went back on the main road and ended up in Kolasin.

    Tara river again.

In the mountains on the way to Kolasin

    DAY 10 (round Kolasin)

We found a very nice place to stay at Kolasin and spent 2 nights there. We visit Biogradski national park and take some small roads around the area.

    DAY 11 (Kolasin - Tirane)

We left our nice hut and went to the capital of Montenegro - Podgorica. We passed it quick and reached a nice lake short before the med. sea. Next was Bar. At Vladimir Kollekater we crossed the border to Albania.

ok adventures - next to come -- Albania. Hope can make it tomorrow.

I've only flown over Montenegro, but it's been on my top priority for visiting since then. Seeing those photos should help motivate me into getting over there and riding it! Thanks for the inspiration!

Still DAY 11 (Kosalin - Tirane)

Remember Vladimir Kollekater - the last gas Station before Albania. We asked some Bikers "How is it in Albania?" -- Good - cheap - nice people.

So we went on to the border. At the crossing the officer told me that I have to pay 20 € tax to go in Albania - I told him that I don't know anything about paying something and I'm not willing to pay something. He asked how many days I wanna stay. I told him that I don't know yet, but if he goes on talking about money I will go back to Montenegro. Then he was telling something about 2 € - 2 € - ok, I gave him the money and we could go on.

Road was realy bad at the beginning. Than much better. We meet 2 from Austria and asked how much they have to pay on the border -- 10 € each. I was smileing. :-)

We followed the main road from Shkoder along the coast and reached Tirane at late afternoon. I ride direct into the center hopeing to find some Hotel. We stopped and Tina nearly collapsed because of the heat. I asked some young locals for a hotel - they told me there are some in the next road. There was Rogner and Sheraton - we choose the 5* Rogner one and Tina felt better after some hours.

Walking into the city later at night didn't work, because Tina was still knocked. So we went back to the Hotel.

    Let's go on with pics.

    DAY 12 (Tirane - Himare)

Due to Tina was so knocked on yesterday we decided not to go inside the montains to the bad and heavy roads - so we followed the coast hopeing for some cooler wind.

The Traffic in Tirane is heavy - it took us a long time to get out. We went to Durres than down to Fier - on to Viore and along the coast to Himare. Street was mostly good - a bit boring because too straight. :-)

Lot of Speedtraps on the road, but it looked like that they don't put foreingers out, only locals have been taken out by police.

    Pics again.

    Beach at Viore

Along the Coast. This road takes 140 km all time along the coast - 40 km are new - 60 km bad - 40 km gravel. (they build the hole road new at the moment).

    down to the sea

In Himare we jumped into a touristic Hotel. Haven't seen much more offers than this Hotel.

DAY 13 (Himare - Paleokastrisa (Corfu))

Tina's back start to hurt heavy - She had problems to climb the bike. We made the decission to go to Corfu and have some quiet days.

We went on to Sarande and Butrint - close to Greece border. Last km, after a cool car ferry, on Gravel. Albanian Bordercontrol told us that the border is closed until 16:00 - I'll start to wait, after 5 min an officer told me that we can go. A bit later we entered Greece. On good roads again down to Igomenitsa to catch a ferry.

    DAY 14, 15 ..... The Corfu-Days

The Camping we found in the Northwest was great. When we arrived the lovley greek lady at the reception told me in here nice accent. "If you go on that road we have a beautyful bitch" -- Only one? -- if you go on to this place we have more bitches" -- ok, thats fine. :D :D :D

The lady was great during all days - she gave us a lot of tipps.

Greetings to the 2 Dutch on Scooters we meet every day somethere on the Island. They even did a great job.

    THE "Going Home"

Ferry-Day -- first back to Igomenitsa - we used the time until 23:00, when our Ferry to Ancona leaves, for a small ride along the greek coast.

We found this beach round 50 km south of Igumentisa.

reaching Ancona after 15 hours on a fast ferry (53 km/h shown on my GPS)

We wanted to visit a friend in Marradi near Imola, but he was busy. So we went on the Autostrada and made some km. Traffic was horrible, everybody raced home or into the weekend. We left the Highway near the river Po and searched for a Hotel. We found one in Reggiolo.

Big surprise - the owner was a great bike traveler - the hotel was full of pics from his travels to Asia, Lybia, Morocco, South-America -- we had a lot of stories to tell.

Even better photos than your 2007 trip. New camera? What sort?

I agree that the Vlore:Saranda coast road is a cracking ride. In some ways it will be better when they finish the new road; in some ways, less exciting.

By the way, exactly what was wrong with the clutch in 2007? Is it a common problem with KTM twins?
