I used to use Radar Now before designing EMFB.
Hah! Found this thread tonight while "updating" my Garmin Nuvi's with software and latest maps!
Since I got my Galaxy S III about 3 weeks ago, I have been looking at apps that would be useful for one of the things I like to do, which is to ride my moto. Looks like your app is the next one on my list, Dennis! I, too, saw the warning about the NEXRAD radar, so I will keep a watch on this thread as you update us on the progress of that. If I need to d'load the app for an upcoming long ride, I'll go ahead and do it and then provide feedback on how it worked for me.
I'm near the end of a long planned 3 month motorcycle trip..
.. if not for that, I'm pretty sure I would have had the "follow me" Nexrad problem fixed by now.
Believe me, I miss it more than anyone..
..the reason I made it in the first place was because there was not anything else quite like it.
I should have it working again within a few days after I get home.
..everything else in EMFB still works.
Thanks for your patience..
Just downloaded to use on my Droid X. Hope you continue to enjoy your trip, I'm confident you'll fix the radar glitch after you get back - when you do it'll be like an early Christmas present for us all!
First thing when I got home from my extended road trip was getting the EMFB "follow me" Nexrad working again.
Actually it turned it to be the second thing since my front tire was THIN and I promised the tire gods that I'd change it asap if only they got me home safe.. they did and I did.
Anyway please, if you have EMFB please test that COMPosite Radar (short range) and BASE Radar (long range) "follow me" is working properly again..
.. I've tested it on three devices and it seems solid
... please let me know if it's working for you.
While tinkering with the code.. I found a few things I might could easily add...
.. i.e. sunrise and sunset for the current location.. (something I always want/need on an extended road trip)
... stay tuned
And, BIG BIG thanks for your patience regarding this untimely outage..
.. believe me, no one missed it more than I on this last road trip
... there is nothing else that works quite like it
(that's why I made it in the first place).
Thank you all for the testing and quick response..
.. I'm glad the EMFB "follow me" NexRad is working for everyone again.
Well for now, I'm still calling it "beta" but regarding the above there is a new EMFB feature that should be working.
(.. you do NOT need to download the app again..
.. this new function is all done on the server side)
When you're viewing either the BASE radar or COMP radar there is a little push pin that shows your current location..
..now if you tap the push pin it will bring up a quick forecast for your current location.
AND ALSO SHOW SUNRISE AND SUNSET TIMES TOO.
I'm still calling it "beta" because the radar views update automatically every 30 seconds so if you're viewing something in the quick forecast pin it will disappear after 30 seconds and you'll have to push the pin again..
.. not a big deal but some might find it annoying.
In the next release I can add an option to make it more sticky if y'all think it's necessary.
.. let me know?
Here is a partial view of what you should see when you tap the pin..
.. might take a bit to show up if you're not on a fast connection.
It actually shows the forecast for the whole week with daily temps too..
......... the rest of the week shows up here as you scroll down.....
As always, thank you and let me know how it works for you..
hope you like it as much as I do..
.. Check out "EMFB" (Easy Map For Bikers) in the Goolge Play store...
small improvement (I think) ..
for cross country riders that want/need to know local sunrise and sunset times.
Tap the red push pin in BASE or COMP radar display..then,
instead of the entire "quick forecast" page, now all you should see is something like this:
(so now the 30 second timer should not be an issue)
Tap the X to remove the window or just wait 30 seconds and it will disappear automatically.
If you still really want to see the WHOLE "Quick Forecast" page for the week:
1) go to Hourly Forecast,
2) scroll down and then in the lower right hand corner tap "quick forecast".
Thanks all for your help and feedback and I hope you have a GREAT Happy Thanksgiving..
"Easy Map For Bikers" in the Google Play Store

V5 coming soon!!
Hopefully before Santa..
NEW in V5
.Automatic Hazardous Weather Alerts! (checks on start and every 30 minutes thereafter)
.The "Quick Forecast" is now an option on the HOURLY button.
.Feedback from user: "EMFB does not stay persistent for very long"..FIXED in V5
.STARTS faster too.
.DND (Do Not Disturb) now saves last known GPS address and time stamps it for automatic SMS Text reply.
(if turned on .. under user options)
.. no more "current address unknown" messages.
V5 coming soon!!
Check the Google Play Store for EMFB
The testing is 95% done.. will try and upload to GP in the next few days...
I was able to simulate any place in the country and I tested more than 35 different sample types.
.. seems like it's going to work.. famous last words .. haha..
So, last chance for changes?.. let me know?
The new v5 Weather Alerts will automatically check:
a) when you first open the app.
b) any time you visit the Preferences menu and tap the "BLUE MUST ALWAYS SAVE" button.
c) every 15 minutes while the app is open (even if it's not in the foreground).
This is very close to what the "final" version is going to look like:
Weather ALERTS Preferences Menu:
The VERY LOUD TORNADO ALERT "test" is so you know how LOUD it's going to sound on your phone..
.. do I need a "not responsible" disclaimer?
If you DO NOT check "Verbose" from the above menu,
then you will see something like this when an Alert is detected.
The "Alert" will clear automatically after about 25 seconds..
... does that make sense?
If you DO check "Verbose",
then you will see something like this
and you WILL have to tap one of the two choices
("Open Web" or "Dismiss") to clear the "Alert".
... better than the WB radio?.. imho ..
.... at least you'll know exactly where the ALERT is for.
let me know if I missed anything ?
OK...EMFB version 5 is ready..
.. check it out in the Google play store..
..and it's now tablet compatible..
Wow! How in ALL my searching did I miss this app? It seems like just what I need. However, I have some questions.
I'm planning a trip to the SE (Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail, Cherohala, etc.) for next summer and I want to plan my route ahead of time. Can I have offline maps/satellite images along with offline turn by turn directions throughout my predetermined route with this app? I plan to create a route for each day.
Thanks in advance!
well, I don't know.. I guess I'm not doing a good job of getting the word out? .. lol ...
Yes.. you can download (cache) almost the entire Smoky Mountain Park in one map.. you can add as many more maps as you like.
no.. you can't yet pre load Satellite images or spoken "turn by turn" directions.. that is a Google Map limitation at this time. The "turn by turn" is calculated by their "super" servers mostly on the fly...
But, you can pre load the written turn by turn the directions but the app won't speak to you as you ride unless you have a signal when you start.
BUT... what you can do is plan your routes on line using Google Maps and then save them to "My Places"..
then they are automatically available on your phone in the LAYERS-MY MAPS.
If you do that, you dont' hear turn by turn directions but you do get to see the map/route you preplanned and your current position is always shown on the map.. so you just follow along.
.. that works even without signal. (very often up there)
.. but but.. if you are lucky enough to have signal, you can preload waypoints using the EMFB DESTINATIIONS (stores 50) and then just tap for the next one as you ride..
.. that's how I do it.. I have my preplanned map on the screen and I can hear turn by turn directions in the helmet from the NAVI part of Google MAPS..
another easy way to do it is save (star) locations on GM.. I usually "star" the start and end point..
.. then, IF you have signal, you can just tap the start point to get there and then tap the end point to run your route.
EMFB will watch the weather for you and provide NOAA ALERTS as they are issued.
EMFB knows where you are and will display your current location in the middle of the four best NexRad sites..
.. you'll always have the best real time animated NexRad and it follows you automatically as you ride.
also, for safty and fun .. be sure to turn on DND (do not disturb).. that will intercept all incoming SMS messages an respond with "I'm out riding and will get back to you as soon as it's safe to do so"..
... and and if you give them your secret access code, EMFB will respond with your current address and LAT LON.. they tap on that and get a google map of where you are... might come in very handy if you go off the road...or just fun for them if all is going well.
You can also send old fashion "Rand McNally Atlas" styled maps with your location as an ePostCard to show people where you are.
It's really easy to draw your maps ahead of time...
here is one of mine:
.. here is another good one off the beaten path..
.. from on line Google Maps, just save those to your "MY PLACES" and then they'll also automatically be on your phone too.
One word of caution.. that place is REALLY addictive! .. lol ..
I went up last spring for two weeks thinking that would be enough... not..
..so I went back for 3 months in the fall... not..
Now I've got a place rented for two more months next spring.
I can probably find some more of my routes if you're interested.
hope that helps.. let me know if you need more info..
That does help...a lot.
I have improved many of the on line links since Christmas..
..no need for a new EMFB download but on some phones you'll have to go to app then "clear cache" for the EMFB app..
.. don't clear the data, only the cache..
Then you'll see the new stuff..
SATS, WINDS, NEXRAD SITES etc..
happy new year all..
Is it possible to get the .apk?
Maybe I don't understand the question..?
.. but if you mean where can you get the apk?
... then yes, it's listed on the Google Play Store
at this time, there is no iPhone app for it.. it only works on Androids..
working on a new feature for EMFB..
.. keep track of your friends...
should be REALLY useful on the Ural.. lol..
Viewable from any browser but to transmit your location you'd have to enable the feature in my app...
let me know what you think and what else it might need?
not ready yet but making progress..
Click on "Where is" or click on any individual marker
..prototype output here:
I am using the latest EMFB, and I love this app.
I recently rode with a friend, and he asked me if the app would do something he and I used to want from his older GPS (I don't remember the model).
I am wondering if there is an option to show a nav screen that isn't a map, but rather a compass, local time, and temperature display. I'd seen this years ago, and this would make the type of riding I do on occasion easier. The display I'd seen years ago had a compass rose and local time in digital, and because these were the only two things displayed, the size of the display was pretty big and easy to read.
I have looked at separate compass apps, and none display time (or temp) with a compass rose. I am contemplating using the compass app with a stand-alone dash clock on my KLR, but I'd rather have them in one place.
How hard would it be to adapt a screen in EMFB to display compass rose, time, and maybe temp?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the suggestion.. I like it..
I could add another "view" either via a button or maybe just include it into the MENU to display..
I already have the time and temp "parsed" from the NOAA site..
..I've already added a "direction" function (heading) based on the internal orientation sensor for the Buddy List feature I'm working on..
.. but I'd have to add at least 8 cardinal point graphics to depict N-NE-E-SE-S-SW-W-NW
That will provide a nice graphical output instead of just a digital reading.
All sounds very doable if I don't run out of code space.
(of course, you WILL have to mount the phone in the direction you are heading)
Caveat.. the Android orientation sensor is probably the least "mature" Android feature..
.. by that I mean if you read the forums, many people have issues with it reporting the correct direction..
... it's usually fixable with 3rd party "calibration" tools but imho one should not have to do that
but right now, that is the state of the art.
I plan on coming out with at least one more major UPDATE to EMFB before I hit the road again this spring so I'll try and have it working before that...
(my usual MO is: work on the app all winter, but then not so much during spring-summer-fall
which is when i'm out on the road "testing" it (wink wink).
And please, if you've not already gone to GOOGLE PLAY and given EMFB a 5 STAR rating and a few kind words,
now would be a great time to do it..
I don't advertise it anywhere so "word of mouth" via the PLAY store is the only exposure it gets.

..no download needed..
Added Animated Water Vapor view to the "SATELLITES" button
(first tap on Satellites.. then tap on >>Water Vapor Images>>)
looks like this (only 12 hour animated)
