help.. if ya got um.. try um..

Back in early Jan, Google announced they were getting serious about pulling the plug on Google Mps API v2 on May 19th..
I gave a heads up back then and how it might affect "follow me NexRad".

If I tell you how many hours I've put in rewriting the code you wouldn't believe it.
    .. so I won't.
I just wanted to get it done before spring cause I'm GOING RIDING!!!
..and, the "follow me NexRad" is one of my favorite features on easy map.

Well I think I think I've got some new stable code and I switched it on today.
It's a total rewrite from api v2 so I expect a few hiccups.
There is nothing you have to download from the Google Store.. this is all "back-end" stuff from my servers.

Please if you have the app, go to WEATHER and then "START RADAR".

Instead of the old default GM marker, you should see a new icon like this:
    (AndyRoid on a bike)

.. if you do see the new icon, it's working.

If you don't see the new icon, you might have to go to APPLICATIONS - EMFB - APP INFO-.. and then just clear just the "CACHE"..

..DON'T clear the DATA (or you'll wipe all out all your history).
    oh, did I mention:
..DON'T clear the DATA (or you'll wipe all out all your history).

Like any major upgrade (I'm speaking of GM API V3), the extra bells and whistles come with some overhead..
.. i.e. the NexRad might take a little longer to load.
But once it does it's smoother and cleaner looking..

There are extra features to make up for it.
It will use LESS data and LESS power on your phone.
If you tap on the "AndyRoid" you should see the nearest 4 cites the coverage is coming from.
.. I plan to add more info to that popup window in the coming months.
With this ApI v3 upgrade I should be able to link in some off road maps (topo maps) for you guys that have more than one bike.

If this new version is not stable, I can still switch it back to api v2 and get back to work fixing it if you let me know what kind of issues you have.
.. there are still a few months before Google pulls the plug.
It has been stable on my Galaxy Nexus "jelly bean".
If you do have a problem, let me know what kind of phone you have and what OS is on it.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you
..(and getting some sleep again )

    Hi Dennis,

Great program. It is the only thing I like about my Galaxy 3 except the camera. My bike is currently in storage for the winter so I haven't used the program for a while, but I thought I would ask two things: I currently use my hiking GPS model as a way to check my speedometer, and as a way of recording total mileage each day. Could either or both of these features be included on your program?
Again, thanks for the program. Last summer I used it on a two-week tour, and my only problem was that I didn't really understand that I needed to download areas that didn't have coverage, so this year I plan on doing that as part of my trip planning. I find that there is so much that this phone and your software can do that it is sometimes easy to miss a capability.

    Hey Dennis,

Just got your info and started EMFB up on the Droid. Andyroid is now cruising the motorways on mine. I'll start it back up this afternoon for the ride (drive actually) back home.

Thanks for the hardwork and the great app.

    Ssevy,
Thank you SO much for the kind feedback
(I hope you've extended your kindness/feedback on the Google Play Store?
.. 5 star ratings and a few kind words is the life blood to keeping this app alive and well.)

    Regarding your two questions.
    1) I've made several attempts to add a speedometer to the application, I've seen other people do it so I know it's "doable".
I must not be doing it "right". I can get a rough approximation, but nothing really useful.
I'll continue to look into it.. thanks for reminding me.

    2) For keep daily totals, there is already a built in feature with Google Maps that can't be beat...
I've had it turned on continuously for about three years and can pick any day in history and show you where I've been and how far I've traveled and when etc ... it is a VERY neat tool that I could not hope to surpass.
(however, might not be good if you in a witness protection program.. lol ..)

Check it out and turn it on.. if you have any questions about it let me know and I'll try and explain what is not already
    here..: http://support.google.com/gmm/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1650397

On the phone the info is very minimal, but once you turn it on and view from the PC you can pick any date or date range and create a "breadcrumb" map of where you were with just a few clicks.

For example.. I met my riding buds this morning for Breakfast.. without me doing anything, Google History created this information display of the time period:
( I can pick any day for the past three years and get similar information.)
    .. way cool I think...
(this is just a screen capture so it's not really interactive..
..but when you're viewing your own, it IS interactive.)

    hope that helps..

thanks for the feedback and letting me know it's working..
so far, feedback has been 100% positive (and working on all phones) so I'm a happy camper.

All the work should payoff down the road (so to speak).
Their old api was fast and lightweight but very limited in functionality.
Now that I've switched to the new api, it's a bit slower but I'll be able to add A LOT more bells and whistles..
    .. stay tuned ! :norton

I've used my droid for a couple of years to aid navigation, but your app appears to answer some needs. I downloaded it last night and put in a test route from myplaces and watched myself go to work.

You mentioned cache ing maps prior to entering areas w/o reception. I too ride the NC mountains and I frequently lose my navigator function. Are you referring to adding the myplaces maps to layers or to what other function are you referring? As you can tell, I'm a noob at this.

no worries mate, we all started someplace..
actually, it's even easy than that.

Open MAPS on the phone and then tap somewhere close to the middle of the GREAT SMOKY MT park.
..zoom out so you can see most of it.
Then, from the MENU select "MAKE AVAILABLE OFFLINE".
That's all you have to do .
If you try to zoom out too far, it will "complain" that the selected area is too large..
.. just zoom in a tiny bit and try again.. with some trail and error, you can almost get the whole park in one chunk

And the best part is you can save multiple "areas" like that.

Once you have the basic area set, now scroll first a bit DOWN (with some overlap) then UP and then LEFT and RIGHT..
.. picture a checkerboard.. you can save multiple areas all around the main area (in this case, the park).

Using that method, I have most of Western N.C., N. Georgia, and E. Tennessee saved so I never worry about losing signal...
.. if you had enough memory on your phone you could save the whole U.S.

I always have a map of where I am and the little blue triangle shows my current position on the map
.. just like a stand alone GPS.

give it a try and let me know if you got it..?

    Thanks,
    Dennis

    Dennis,
Just checked the app on my HTC and your upgrade appears to be working as advertised, thanks! I have been able to store several smaller maps in the phone but need a tutorial for "caching", if you could recommend one.
    Many Thanks,
    Dog

    Dog,
Great.. glad to hear it's working.. I'm still "tweaking" it to make it better..

about caching.. can you be a bit more specific?
(the post right above yours just asked something similar I think)..
.. what else are you trying to accomplish?

    thanks,
    Dennis

Thanks for the help. Had to get a newer version of maps. Now I'm downloading maps. Already made my tracks for my spring trip in google maps.

Now, how do I get that eye level thing going?

I told all my friends on the Nightawk forum about your app.

    Read this..

Nearer to the end is some information about how I use the SAT view in NAVI mode.

Google is up to their old tricks again so I need some help asap..
I just pushed 5.22 up for download access.
But after this month, Google is making some changes and I won't be able to push any new versions up for awhile after that.
    (30 to 60 days)

So PLEASE, take the time to "test" this v 5.22 asap.
If something needs fixing, I only have another 5 days to fix it..
After that, it will be quite awhile before I can get back to it.

There are A LOT of changes "under the hood"..this is a major change.
    Quick summary:
    >> MUCH Faster start
(don't be in a hurry to disable the splash screen, you can't easily get it back)
    >> New look
(higher button contrast for better visibility and color change for user touched feedback)
    >> The static "title bar" is now the active "message bar"
(The Weather alerts, system messages and SMS #'s display in the new message bar)
    >> Better SMS response format
(There are now separate address and lat/lng responses for universal device support.. for those with iPhones who txt you)
    >> Full support for gm maps apiv3
    >> Two optional modes for "NexRad Start Radar"
("classic v5" for backwards compatibility, or "Pre-view v6" in the Menu options)
    >> MUCH faster dynamic updates in NexRad
(old updates were twice per minute; the new updates are every 5 seconds)
The effect is like a moving map GPS with real time NexRad superimposed over your current position.
Classic 5 will use a bit less data than 5.21 but Preview 6 will use a bit more

PLEASE take the time to beat it up asap.
.. spring is coming and I'm trading this keyboard for some handlebars pretty soon.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dennis
