You can't really reduce the power consumption..
.. you need to increase the charging rate.

The problem is the USB charger.
That is only 400 ma.. That is barely a trickle charger and not enough to use the GPS while charging.
.. it is not designed to both use and charge the phone at the same time.

Go to "Best Buy" and get their "Rocketfish" charger..
.. about $26 but it is rated at 2500 ma.

More info here about 1/3 the way down:

I added another page to the Geo-Referenced section.
No new download needed, it's just there.
It almost could replace many of the other wea functions.

From the home page, go to WEATHER then ADDITIONAL WEATHER then in the GeoRef@@ section:
    "Current: Clouds, and high/low Temps
..then.. either zoom out for Satellite overlay OR tap the icon for WIND, Humidity and 4 Day forecast."

When you first open it, it will center on and show your current location (the AndyRoid biker) but you can drag it anyplace you wish..
(even up into Canada and Alaska).

At the default zoom level, the SAT view is hidden but if you zoom out the SAT view will get overlayed on the map.
Or, you can tap any of the "current temp/cloud/sun" icons (sun for day and moon for night) over any city and get the WIND, high/low temp forecast, Humidity and 4 Day forecast.

playing around with the new screen I realized that it's not just for U.S., Canada and Alaska.. it's actually for the entire world..
    .. just zoom out..

I've gotten more than few requests for information so I'll update here..
(with software, I do hate using the word "new" since it's only relevant for a few hours, but in this case Google MAPS really is "new")

    As of mid-July 2013
Android Google MAPS has been completely overhauled.

In terms of learning curve, it's almost like starting over again with a brand new app.
Spend an hour or so and it starts to make sense.
Some of it I like, some I don't.
"My Maps" and "Latitude" are gone along with a few other features I used often.

The good news is that Google MAPS is still 100% compatible with EMFB v5.23
So, if you never bothered to learn the old Google MAPS, you still don't have to learn the new one.
Just use EMFB to speak a destination and it will store and sort it and show you both a MAP and NAVIGATION route to it.
You can still use EMFB to speak a quick list of waypoints to create a custom route.
.. for EMFB, there is nothing new to learn or do with the new version of Google MAPS.
(The EMFB real time weather information is all my stuff so there have not been any changes there.)

    regards,

    Hi Dennis,

Just checking where things are at with your app. With the google changes and new android stuff popping up everywhere and almost everyday where does your app stand? what do you see in the near and slightly distant future re your app and android trends. My impressions are that android is going to make standard GPS use passe...is your app on that leading edge as you see it?

Can I say that I'm really pissed about the loss of the ability to load my maps onto my droid.

    re status and pissed...

    status:
5.23 will remain the latest release for the near future.
.. Google has made some changes to close the interface for my development system.. but I continue to make changes to the java side server scripts which is what you see in the end anyway.
.. I've recently added satellite and traffic overlays to the HOURLY AND 7 DAY FORCAST.

    pissed:
if you purchased a new phone with the new maps you are screwed unless you root.. but, if you just upgraded to the new MAPS all you have to do is uninstall it.. the phone will revert to the old MAPS you like..
.. that's what I did.. I'm presently (since Labor Day) on a NE Colorado camping trip and really missed the terrain maps to avoid the floods..
.. Google should be shot for removing them.

Do you still recommend the Nexus 7 (32gb) tablet for best compatibility ? The wife has ordered me to put a Christmas list together, and a tablet will be numero uno.

.. I only own the Nexus 7 tablet.. so that is the only one I've tested it on and it works fine on that ..
Basically I just ported over the phone version so it looks exactly like it does on the phone except everything is REALLY large and easy to read.

    one exception:
The SMS DND (Do Not Disturb) feature does not work because there is no 3G/4G connection and therefore no SMS application to intercept or respond to..

    thanks for your support..
.. and if you've not already, PLEASE go to Google Play and give EMFB a good review and 5 star rating..
.. some joker with an ancient antique phone (original HTC) and running on T-Mobile out west and no clue how to use it gave it a bad rap and that is all people see now... some positive reviews sure would help me out.

    thanks again,
    Dennis
