I would love to have one of those, but clearly it would be a case of too much bike and not enough rider :lol3

I had one of the very first original RC8s back in 2008 (I had the second to arrive in CA!). I kept it two years, had plenty of issues (all of the recalls and the gearshift replacement, two oil leaks, expanding/leaking tank replaced twice, etc.), did a few track days, put about 5K miles on it before being fed up and selling it (the fact that my favorite KTM dealer was dropping the road bikes did not help either).

In spite of it all I still loved it. Of all the bikes I've had it is the only one I have found myself really missing. It is just so comfortable and easy to ride - it was the fastest bike ever at the track for me (before the S1K and its electronics) specifically because it was so comfortable, manageable and easy to ride well. I was also always in love with its styling - the new ones are even better. So unique and full of personality.

Anyhow, I am really itching to get another one - I paid $24K back then for a base RC8, at today's prices the RC8R seems like the biggest bargain of the sportbike world. I already called the dealer, they are all out but could get me one in a few days. I need one more bike like I need a giant tumor on my penis, but that has never stopped me before. :rofl The ONLY thing that has me a bit hesitant is the lack of ABS. Everything else I can do without but I have grown really fond of ABS on all my bikes. Not a deal breaker by any means, but I am almost positive next year's model is going to get at least ABS, if not TC like the new SuperDuke and Adventure - hey, the 2013 RC8R finally got a slipper clutch! :D

Any other reasons not to go for it? I assume all the old niggles and problems have been long fixed, is that really the case?

I have owned a SuperDuke for three years and 25,000 plus miles. I drink the KTM cool aid for certain as no other bike has put a smile on my face as the KTM has. I've had some small issues, nowhere near as bad as Apessino's but would really love to own a RC8, vintage 2011 onwards. From what I have been able to ascertain KTM stepped up their development and attention to details around 2010 so issues should be less.

Of course with the new SuperDuke 1290 coming soon, that bike might be more to my liking:eek1

I had a 2008 SuperDuke R as well... I had more problems with that one than the RC8... :lol3 Leaking seemed to be a common problem, with the SDR I had: fuel leaking from the fuel pump (not fun), one oil leak, expanding tank (again), the wiring harness melting because it was routed too close to the front cylinder (essentially ALL new SDRs had this problem - mine started to go bananas within 100 miles of leaving the dealer, easy fix but how something like this escaped testing/QC is beyond me), the light bulb in the tail kept buzzing itself into failure, etc. And guess what, still loved the damn thing!

To be fair, I also had a 2007.5 KTM Adventure which was completely trouble free for over 20K miles, so not all bikes had issues.

I am hopeful the old problems have since been resolved.

This place is like a light to a moth.

And, yeah, tell her....I'll wait here while you set up your tent space in the garage. :lol3

I find the KTM to be a brilliant machine, not easy to come by after they made the dealers separate into road or off-road. I would love to look at it in the morning in my garage, that's for sure!
I just found a 2013 for about $17.000! That is a very good price!
    Hmm....maybe I should call them tomorrow.....hmmm:lol3

Luckily I live in motorcycle heaven - I still have 4 dealers that sell the road bikes within 25 miles of my house. :freaky

$17.5K OTD is what I am paying for mine (still can't believe how cheap they are). Like I said, a real bargain for the bike that it is.

    $17.500 OTD is really great!

Seems like the closest road bike dealer is about 3 hours away:huh:cry

That's great! From what I hear with the SD that is the experience most people have - I was not lucky with mine but, like I said, even with the few headaches it was still totally worthwhile. KTMs just have something special about them, in my opinion...:1drink

My partner (work, not life) had the RC8R...for 23 kilometers. Dude fell asleep after working midnight shift on the assembly line, then going golfing and having umpteen drinks. Fell asleep at the wheel and hit my partner head on. The good news is my partner is like Wolverine now, just titanium instead of Adamantium.
