My new hobby is long distance shooting and am interested in what folks think is the best all around caliber. So far the opinion is the .308, .338 Lapua and 6.5 Grendel. Having never shot the last two, I was curious to see if any of you have. The .308 is certainly the best for me due to the cost of ammo. Also another concern I have is barrel length, is a 20" better than a 24" or 26"? What grain bullet? My goal is to be able to punch paper at 800-1000 yds and maybe do some competition shooting up at the Whittington range in Raton. And finally, the question is bolt or semi-auto? I believe bolt will offer greater accuracy. Certainly it's easy to spend over $2500-3000 on a rig, but I'm thinking of a Reminton SPS model 700 synthetic with a Leupold orSchmidt and Bender 4x10x50, match trigger and a Harris bipod which should be in the $1200 range. I expect the Libby's will have some smart ass remarks, however this type of hobby is considered to be more of an art than some redneck hobby, so please leave your discerning remarks somewhere else.
