    Hey all,

For the past few months since getting my KLR I have noticed that dogs that I go by go completely crazy. I commuted on a VX800 by these same dogs for years and rarely would they bark or run at me. Now they are like ravenous wolves trying to take me out. Dogs slamming into fences & spining around so fast to look at me that they almost fall down.

Is this a KLR thing or a thumper thing? My theory is that my KLR is begining to go "tweety" and I can not yet hear it but its like a silent dog whistle.

MY friend says the same thing about his DR600. I've actually seen it myself,
I can ride right by an animal , nothing , he goes by, and the animal loses it.

Funny you bring this up, I was riding around the neighborhood looking at old houses and a Pug comes out of nowhere, freaked the crap outta me. Followed me for a good quarter of a mile darting back and forth.

I've heard that KLR's can develop a "chirp" in the stock exhaust can. Mine has 30K on it and this has yet to happen, but maybe this is what's happening on yours; maybe it'll keep deer away too...

I had a dog lunge out of the back of a pickup at me while riding my LC4. His teeth got the cuff of my sweatshirt but not me. :eek1 Dogs do seem to go nuts when a motorcycle is around and I now always give them a wide berth. I don't know if it's a thumper thing though, they go nutz for my Superhawk to (tho' it's pretty thumpy as well).

I'll bet you are correct about the "tweety" factor.

I have a similar yet slightly different problem, when I ride by cute women on my KLR, they go nuts.

    Well, maybe not.

Had a dog try to intercept me yesterday. He was charging so hard, that when I changed speeds he tumbled end over end. Thumpers do seem to freak out the animals.

Not only does mine drive dogs crazy, but it scares the hell out of our cows. Honda 4trax and Polaris they don't mind, but the Kaw...they'll run faster than you'd think steaks-on-the-hoof could move.

My NX250 sends dogs APE SHIT also. It has happened many times now where I will be riding down some residential street and out of some yard I will have a dog sprinting and barking right at me, its pretty scarry.

The weird thing is that on one of these occasions, I decided to stop instead of jetting off and the dog ran right at me and then bumped into my leg and just wagged his tail and so I petted him and rode off, I then rode by the house about 25 minutes later and the dog just watched me go by...I was at a higher RPM when I went past the first time and the second time I was just putting by, the dog did seem to stop freaking out when the engine dropped to an idle.

Had some new people move in down the road from me last year. They had a fairly large dog and for the first few nights all was well. I would slow down on approaching thier house, spot the dogs eyes and change speed as needed to leave her snapping at gravel. After about four nights of this......... surprise, she had got my timing down almost caught my boot and ended up getting her neck broke by the rear tire. My neighbors were very understanding and said that they will be sure to tie the next one up.

My neighbor's border collie goes nuts when I'm on the F650GS, but when I am on the 1150GS the dog doesn't care. My theory has always been that the F650GS resembles livestock (sheep, goat), and the border collie has only one thing to do in life and that is to chase animals (besides barking at everything that moves).

Go to the FAQ, print it and call it your KLR bible:

    http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#exhaust

KLR exhaust question: Why does my bike sound like an old VW?

This is affectionately known as "tweety," and can happen to bikes anytime after a few thousand miles. It seems to appear earlier on bikes that are ridden on a lot of short trips, thereby allowing condensation to remain in the muffler. It also seems to be traced to clogging of the spark arrestor system. The noise is merely an annoyance; it will not damage your engine. Aside from replacing the exhaust system, you can try to fix it:

Take a huge straightblade screwdriver (like 12" shaft), and sharpen the end with a file. Look in the end of the exhaust, there is a small perforated pipe running from the opening to about 8" inside. It has a seam on the bottom (6:00 position) that may already be split open. Using the screwdriver and a hammer, drive the screwdriver into and along the seam, opening it up to within 1" of the end. Start the motor and listen for tweety. If it's still there, make another lengthwise slit at the 12:00 position, start the motor and check. Some people have had to make four slits (at 90 degree intervals) to fix the tweet.

A number of cows and one moose have shown interest in my Moto Guzzi, so far none of these encounters have turned ugly yet.
