I managed to get out on Sunday & check out some areas that I thought had potential to the south. It was fun to explore, and some of the riding was very good. The scenery was spectacular!

Unfortunately, distracted by the ridges in the last photo, I managed to drift over into the talus along the road...a moment of inattention that caused a tumble at about 25mph. I tweaked my shoulder & canceled plans to camp that night, but am otherwise fine. Gear did its job, again.

Wow, you were really up there, Climberevan! Was that in the Leviathan Mine area? I have never been around there, keep meaning to give it a go.

I can post up some tracks, but it was mostly on roads/jeep trails that show up on USGS topos. Right now it's still a mess of "proposed" that didn't work out & actual. I find it much more fun to plan on CalTopo & see if things are real than to just follow tracks.... The route was China Springs-Carson River-Loope Canyon, across the road to Dump Canyon then to Walker, which didn't have any gas. Bummer--had to backtrack to Topaz, and then up Mill Canyon, and eventually toward Sonora Pass. There is a wealth of dirt to be had around the Marine base, and the area warrants further exploration. When it gets cooler I like to do loops that include the Pine Nuts & Sweetwater ranges, but this time of year it's just too brutal over there.

The east end of Pine Nuts road had a fire this am. 100+ acres early this am. It looks like it is out, just a heads up if you end up on the east side of the valley.

South Carson Valley is hammered with thick smoke from the Preacher Fire. Low visibility down by Lake Topaz.

But, it is great when it happens in a beautiful place . :-)

Thank you, bdesj, for the recommendation. It was a short ride, but oh so super sweet. Luckily, I had extra time to spend there, while I waited for my goat to go :rofl

I am not actually sure ... ? I had a full tank of gas as I began my ascent, and she was running just fine. After stopping for a photo op, I kicked her again and again and again......., and she didn't even hint at wanting to go. Personally, I have known her to be more responsive in a cold start on a winter's day, and we all know that can take forever for her to get her gumption up.

I am not sure why, but I had an idea to remove the gas cap for a brief moment to release some pressure. As soon as I did that, she fired right up, first kick. I am thinking that perhaps the ascent caused her to flood with that full tank. ???? mystery ???? If I had not stopped, I am pretty sure she would have sailed up the hill with no problems at all.

All in good fun and truly worth the view :-)

I asked this over in the Sacramento thread but thought one of you guys might know...

According to OSM/Google Maps/Garmin Topo, there are a couple options for riding between Route 88 and Route 4. Can anyone please advise if this is still possible? I'm concerned that private property or road closures from our big winter will not allow you to get through?

I'm riding Bridgeport, Masonic, Sweetwater Mountains, Mt Patterson, Desert Creek, Sonora Junction, Little Walker River Beginning Mostly 2 track and FS roads as well as a few miles of good singletrack.

Looking for a handful of riders to join the fun. Mostly easy, fun, scenic , and the single track is good for the intermediate level rider. Not a noob ride but experienced riders will really enjoy the tracks I put together.

I'm planning to camp at USFS Obsidian Campground off HWY 395 15 miles north of Bridgeport and day ride from there. There is motel lodging available in Bridgeport for non campers.

If anyone is interested in joining, or even showing me arounfd let me know and I'll fill you in on more specific details. I'm coming in my truck from So Cal/ Mojave Desert area.

I'm not sure about the area you posted, but I bet it would make a fun loop with the Deer Valley trail...

I was working on this over in the Sacramento DS thread but thought I would share it here for those interested in a large adventure bike type ride with a lot of pavement and a few NFS roads to keep things interesting.

GPX file is attached to this post.

This was a nice 2 day trip, you will need a solid 8-9 hours for each day. Distance was 564 total and each day was about 280 miles. Elevation varies from 734 to 9374 feet. It was damn hot bellow 4000'. Plenty of ups and downs with 55,000 feet of elevation changes. We camped at Lake Alpine as it's very close to Lake Alpine Lodge. Food was decent and beer was cold.

Rode up Hunter Lake from Caughlin and back down Garson road into Boomtown today before the showers started up. Man maybe I just forgot how that trail was but it was really chewed up. I'm sure years of abuse and a heavy winter has taken its toll but it was pretty rough going. Still a fun day exploring and seeing some sierra goodness.
