these bikes were designed to run with the power up kit installed.
This. I'm amazed at how shitty they run without it.
I found a good used cover, and promised myself to never use the kick starter.....
Now that she's running, she's got some problems;
2007 TE510, starts and idles ok. I hears a lot of loud rattling at idle and lower speeds. Like piston slap, or maybe timing chain/valves.
When revving up it sometimes "revs down" very quickly, and sometimes revs down and dies very quickly.
It almost seems like a rod bearing seizing up. Although it cranks over and starts again.
Oil change showed some fine particles on the magnet, no big chunks.
I'm looking for this to be a reliable trail/street machine. Sounds like a tear down is in order. Thoughts??

If I don't flash it immideatly, will it still be rideable? It will be another week before I can get it to the dealer.
Also put my 610SM up for sale and found some SM wheels for the 510.....
It's been sitting up quite a while right? I'd think a carb cleaning would help the idle/dying thing. The rattling could be loose valves that need re-shimming. Fine particles in the oil is not a big deal.
You can "power up" without dealer input...removing the O2 sensor and installing the resister plug into the wiring harness in it's place tells the computer to use the race map already built into the computer.
I have 7500 miles on mine.
I am getting near to 14,000 miles, today, on a hard dual sport ride, me and my buddy on the Beta both filled up at the same time, and did a 32.5 mile loop with our EXC buddy, the Beta man put 1.3 gals in after the loop, about 25mpg, and I put in 1.4 gals, probably 23mpg, we were haulin' ass for sure, temps in the high 80sF. The TE450 can hang with the newer 450RR and 500EXC.
Nice. I have never complained about the lack of power on my 450 and I have no desire to replace it with anything else anytime soon. Love that bike
Intermittent e-start button issues already my 310 has all kinds of issues and ended up pissing me off pretty good.
It also just cut off once when I was slowing down from 60mph to a stop... Then it wouldn't start back up...
Just venting now. Hope it will get me home and can dig into it tomorrow.

Alright , alright. The 510 is a fukin beast
The previous owner had taken out the cover thingie on the air filter and the cat in the exhaust, but no O2 sensor delete. Only took a little while to button everything up and go haul ass! It feels perfect now. The power is very traceable and smooth. The hesitation and drag is gone. Just instant wheelie or burning the rear tire down in the dirt. But it's very traceable? I guess. Manageable maybe? Whatever it is, it's fun!
The sporadic start is the clutch cancel switch in the lever :huh just have to pull t in alllll the way, sometimes twice, but then she fires up. Will probably just bypass it soon.
Just wanted to share some info. I finally had a chance to take out my 08 450. I had a fun ride on some fast dirt roads and two track. I cannot even compare my DRZ to this bike, it is not in the same class. Anyways on the to the story, I got off on to a trail by accident and sunk my bike in a deep water hole. I got the engine off quickly got it home on my truck.
I dried every thing out. Took the airbox out, clean the plug, flushed the oil 3 times, dried and cleand the air filter. Everthing back to normal . BRAPPP ON!
I did not see a post on here about it so I thought I would share. I put 2 in rox on this evening. I did not thing about the throttle cables but they were to tight. I did not have enough so I routed the cables underneath the bars and everything is good again. If you have not played with a throttle cable assembly before it can be a bit of a PITA, at least it was for this amature wrencher. <o></o>

Due to ridiculous import laws in Canada, I can't import my TE510. I'm rather partial to it. It's a 2010 with more mods than the bike is worth. I'm thinking of tearing it down and bringing the pieces home - minus the US frame. I'll bolt all the great stuff onto a Canadian bike.
My question to all, are the 2008/2009/2010 frames from the Husky line up similar? Do I need to stay with another 2010, fuel injected bike?

My TE 510 has 2300 miles on it and I,ve noticed broken O-rings on my garage floor . The chain has,nt streched much and does,nt seem wore out. I,ve got a long dual sport trip coming up , should I replace it?
Not if you are comfortable with the possibility of a failure on your long dualsport ride.
Do I need to repack my muffler? How often?
7500 miles now, and I'm noticing a lack of power, especially up top...and it seems louder with just the spark arrester than before. I normally run the DB reducer insert, but it just doesn't have the grunt it used to...not a heck of a lot better with the spark arrester.
Are you running the short insert or the longer Euro insert?
I recently re-packed my Arrow can, and now, after all that work, I wish I had not re-packed it. You have to cut out a stainless steel inner piece that is really the muffler itself, which turns the aluminum outer cover into the new muffler body structure. After re-packing, it was no quieter than before and with complaints from my road mates, I purchased a Euro dBkiller for $65 and man, what a difference, more low end grunt and much quieter, wish I would have done the dBkiller instead of repacking.
That's the insert I usually run.
So they use packing material...but don't actually make allowances in the construction to repack/rebuild it?
