Good question...and sorry, I did mis-represent that. The skills challenge / competition on Sunday from 10-12pm and then in the afternoon, from 1-3pm, we are allowing supervised trials (keep in mind that AGATT is enforced) for those who feel comfortable — are only available for Weekend Pass, not Day Pass to participate, but it will be fun to watch! For anyone who does want to participate, keep in mind, it's not a beginners course, so it's best to have some dirt riding experience.

This looks like a great event! As a n00b to DualSport riding, would the riding classes need some more experience? Is there any requirements for riding gear (both bike and rider)?

The classes are geared to all levels, including noobs, since the instructor works with your skill set. To start, we have an intro to dirt class called "When the Pavement ends" and how to pick up your bike in various positions (it's not if, but when that is going to happen) and then other classes that focus on specific techniques, such as tight turns and variable terrain (what your bike feels like in sand, mud, gravel, etc.).

We do require all gear all the time when you are on the course, which means appropriate jacket, pants, boots, gloves, and of course, helmet. Some riders ask about tires, and something that's a little more aggressive (such as a heidenau) might help out when learning.

For anyone considering going, we're doing something new this year, hosted by ADVMoto Magazine, for some extra motorcycle fun (just have to mention it for anyone who hasn't heard yet since I'm excited I get to join in on this!):
    • An exclusive Saturday night dinner with kegs from a local brewery
    • A fun-filled prize drawing party on Saturday night withover $7000 worth of adventure riding gear and training!
    • Guided tours by Pisgah Moto Adventures. Space is limited so please sign up at the ADVMoto tent just after arriving!
    • Motorcycle-only camping area in soft grass for easy tent-camping (trucks and moto trailers okay, too)
    • A custom Nalgene event water bottle & an Overland Expo gift bag
All tickets must be purchased in advance, so in case you are interested, here's the link to buy tickets now, including the $45 add-on: http://www.overlandexpo.com/moto

You'd just have to go up to him and ask! He's super nice and would love that. He'll be at the author's tent all weekend, selling books and always happy to chat, and then there is a "Happy Hour with Ted" where he'll tell stories and answer questions. Definitely do stop by!

I just bought my weekend pass ticket. I hope to do a route ride rather than taking a skills coarse but plan to glean what I can from participants throughout the weekend.

    Signed up yesterday.
First time for me, but a couple buddies of mine volunteered last year and did so again this year.
    We'll all be camping there.

This is a great event! I went to West in 2014 and have missed the last three years due to my "real" job.
I plan on riding up from South Florida next Wednesday if anyone wants to join me.

Sooo, now that the dog got her chemo and I don't have to cut her eye out, Irma didn't blow my house away, and my vacation didn't wither in the wind...I'm signed up.
