Anybody ride an XR650L?

    Why is the XR650L so ignored around here? It seems everyone rides KTM,KLR,or BMW. All great bikes,but I thought the XR was a pretty good D/S bike too. What gives, am I missing something, or should I just STFU and drink my beer?!:slurp

    I am sure there are plenty of people who would disagree with me but from what I have seen most people who what the best performance get the XR650R and dual sport it. The R has more power, lighter etc. The L is just....... ahh forget it.

    Maybe it's because they've been around for so long unchanged that there's nothing left to talk about. Personally I'm more than happy with mine except for the seat height.

    Wow, I think I just saw my future. :D

    I see myself doing exactly what your DAD is doing; riding with my son(s). I plan on trailering our bikes to New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Big Bend in Texas. Where we can ride and explore to our heart's content.

    Those photos are exactly what I want to do on an XR650L. I don't have one yet, but that's what I plan to buy. I want to ride gravel/dirt roads, mountain passes, Jeep trails, etc. And, I plan to trailer it because there are long distances to cover to get to the mountains in Colorado and New Mexico.

    The XRL gets a bad rap because the XRR is so much better in performance; but some people won't ride like a "bat out of hell". Some, like myself, plan to ride a little less aggressive than others. Just out exploring and enjoying. The XRL should easily get me there and back. That is such beautiful scenery in your photos.

    I Love My 650-L ! I actually will get it running this weekend I hope. I put a new piston & rings in it over the winter. I had to put a new countershaft in it, so why not do a little maintence while the motor is down. I have put a Corbin Seat on mine (which is like Night/Day to all enduro seats) White Bros. complete exhaust, Jet Kit, K&N Filter, 5 gal.Tank, ..... I took mine on an 1,100 mi. trip to Va. in the Fall of 03 and had a BLAST. It's not the fastest, but will peg 105 + on the speed-o! I'm not one of those guys that Rev the motor and run the *#@*! out of a bike to prove it's fast. 105 is fast on a 650 to me :thumb My buddies 650 R would Dust my L, but so what. We don't race, we just ride. The "L" is a Great choice for a Big Bore Enduro, unless you'r just vain in heart & ego. Get One, You'll Love It! :thumb

    When I was riding in the deserts of southern California in the 70's and 80's not one of those bikes were built as good as an XR650L, or DRZ. Now there are so many bikes that are somewhat better that the XR650L is left behind, but it is still one of the better bikes in that class. A friend has a KLR and my wife rides a DR650. In my opinion the XRL is far better than either of these off road and equal to these for one day trips. The KLR being better for longer trips. If I had to buy one of these three it would be the XR650L. The BMW 650 is better on road than the KLR and my KTM 640 Dualsport is better offroad, but you can't say it is far better because although it has more power and better suspension you can only throw a 350 lb bike around so much no matter how good the bike is. Yes Dakar riders can make it do miracles, but if they road the XL they would make it look better than any of us also. For the average rider it doesn' matter that there are better bikes when you get to 350 lbs. Even the KLR wil get you there. No matter which bike you choose you will add after market parts to make it suit you better. Even my KTM has Race Tech springs since I bottom the suspension too often. The real point is that weight is the single greatest problem with these bikes.

    :ear I've got an XR650L & a 1200GS. I put a set of Avon Venoms on the 650L & around town it is more fun than the Beemer, but out on the open road the BMW wins hands down. More weight, more horse power, more everything. Off road the 650L is a lot easier to handle & a lot less expensive to throw on the ground. The Honda will get you in to Dual Sporting at a reasonable price & you will have a ball of fun with it. Has anybody noticed that riding a 650L sorta puts you in a no mans land when it comes to the old M/C to M/C wave. Of course HD riders don't wave, but Cruiser riders, Sport Bike riders, & Wingers all look the other way when they see a 650L. I guess with the # plates you just look like kid on a dirt bike.

    I don't think I've seen any used for more on road than off like a KLR650 that some ride for long distances on roads to get to off road stuff. If one was used for that, would probably need some form of windscreen and better seat for that purpose. Does anyone have a set up like that. I don't have a trailer and won't ride if I need a trailer to get there, anyway.

    I don't have # plates on mine, but lots of bikes wave to me. Maybe because it's a "no man's land" bike that all others wave. Even HD riders wave to me. HD doesn't make a dirt/dualsport bike, so there's no reason to shun me for not buying a HD when I want a specific bike. :dunno

    I rode 400 miles in one day on the stock seat, and it didn't bother me at all. I was surprised. I rode 550 on my Kawasaki GPz550 a long time ago and it was really painful after 400 miles. I have not trailered the bike yet.

    So there are some XRL riders out there. I guess you guys are just in touch with your "inner motorcycle" and don't talk about it.

    I'm new to the dualsport scene, but have been riding streebikes since '73 and racing off road since '84.

    All the commments, smartassed and serious,are very welcome and only add
    to my dualsport education. As of yet I don't have a d/s bike but plan on getting one soon. I'm still really confused about which one to get. Guess I should just pull the trigger on one and start riding.

    The XR650L has many well-known compromises and limitations. Big, heavy, slow, unsophisticated, etc. But it is inexpensive, reliable, and can go almost anywhere with a good rider.

    STFU and drinking beer :slurp is good advice around here! :wink:

    The wrong thing to do: A n00b, named "fstrnu" :rolleyes posted pics of his XR650L and bragged how it he could outride everyone, and how much better his bike was than the BMW GS'es, etc. He was immediately flamed into oblivion.

    The right thing to do: I rode to the ADVrider event in Ouray on my old, ugly XR650L. When others asked what I rode, I was semi-apologetic, expecting them to make fun of my bike. But the reaction was "Cool! Did you ride it the whole way?" Ah, yeah, of course. No one told me my bike sucked, including Nachtflug. :nod

    P.S. I'm keeping my XR650L, and planning several long trips this summer. :thumb

    Wes Weber, a great rider (look up Wayne and Wes Weber's ride reports), told me at Ouray that most people get different bikes all the time, and have trouble improving their riding skills. He told me to get a bike, stick with it, and get as much seat time as possible. Sounds like good advice to me.

    People on this site are into riding, and the type of bike does not matter. Even if it is a Harley. But posers, and "my bike is better than yours" types are not tolerated at all.

    Most, not all, Harley riders shun anything that's not assembled in Milwaukee with lots of foreign parts. ND, Showa, Keihin, ect, ect, ect. WOW! Same parts my Honda's made of. :evil

    Personally, I love my XR650L. It is a totally fun street bike, can easily do fire trails and such, and is so reliable that I never worry about it getting me back home.

    I had it re-jetted and put an FMF PowerBomb header on it, along with an FMF Titanium-4 muffler. It is loud, and I am thinking of swapping the FMF system out for a Big Gun quiet system. Anything, however, is better than the beached whale of a stock exhaust. That thing weighs a ton.

    I will soon wear out the stock tires, and was glad to read about someone enjoying the Avons. I had also thought about the Michelins. It's a shame the Metzeler and Pirelli street-focused dual sport tires don't come in an 18" size.

    I wouldn't worry about what others think; if it seems the right bike for you, then go for it. I don't plan on selling mine anytime soon, even though I also have some Ducatis and an RC51.

    I have a '93 XR650L which is a great bike. I had the exact same bike several years ago which I sold and have regreted selling it ever since. I have taken my stock bike and introduced an IMS 4.0 gallon tank, which is a must. Acerbis also makes a slightly larger tank from what I hear. As for lowering the seat, I've heard that there is a lowering link available for those who find the bike too tall. I don't need this, but I'm sure a search over on ThumperTalk will probably offer more information.


    I am looking for more mods for my bike: gps, rack, luggage, etc. as I plan on riding in the Sierras and the OBDR this summer. These are great bikes, but their technology is over ten years old, so most people are looking at the newer bikes.
