I received a letter is from the DMV today offering an opportunity to participate in a motorcycle study to be conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The gist of the letter says that I will be paid between $300 and $500 dollars depending on what type of cameras and sensors they install on my bike.

    Anyone else receive this letter?

The stator on my plated CR500 is pretty big, but I'm not sure if it will power both their cameras and sensors:lol3

I got one that said something about cameras and sensors. I think they mentioned the $300 to $500 also! I think it was from the police department. :lol3

I am skeptical of the story given in that letter. I cannot imagine anything positive for the motorcycling community that would come from their stated purpose. Especially so if they put monitors on your plated CR500.

The letter doesn't mention which motorcycle I own that they are interested in monitoring, but I am assuming that it isn't the CR500. Besides, the CR5 is allergic to both the CHP and DMV offices so it won't be visiting either of those places.:lol3

    I'm guessing you didn't get a letter?
With all of the bikes you own, why not?

Who else got one of these letters?

Bullshit. They'll just forward all the data to insurance companies and our rates will get jacked up again. If I see that letter in the mail, its going in the shitcan.

I got one as well. Was considering it and looked into it more - here's a link to some pics of the system installed:

    http://www.motorcycle.vtti.vt.edu/study2/bike.html

If I could install it myself I might go for it but ain't nobody else touching my bike :lol3.

edit: from the consent form, for the tin foil hat types:

If being skeptical of the true purpose of this study results in my membership to the "tin foil hat" club, well then sign me up.

The vague disclaimers in the proclamation you quoted have little, if any ability to protect a person at fault in an incident.

Now on the other hand, wearing a tin foil hat when involved in a tort situation certainly ensures true legal immunity.

At least as much as that consent form does.

Could be some Euro trash study to legalize lane sharing but to be sure you should ride Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap then maybe some Skyway.

The main rub I have with this study is; What type of information is being collected and how will that collected information be used. I don't take stock in any of those nitwit conspiracy theories but I'm usually pretty skeptical.

    From the website: http://www.motorcycle.vtti.vt.edu/study2/pay.html

How will the data be used?
The real-world data collected in this study will be used to look for ways to reduce motorcyclist fatalities and injuries. The data will describe good and bad experiences in detail. These data will be analyzed to develop guidance on topics including: conditions that are present when riders have trouble, actions of other vehicles, evasive maneuvers that are possible, safe rider behaviors, unsafe rider behaviors, the sequence of events that end in a crash or near-crash, and potential countermeasures.
