Anyone tried the Self-Tapping-Carbide-Tire-Studs?

    We're all crazy here. It's a Desmosedici RR right? :evil Seriously though, the bike can make a huge difference with fender clearance, etc. You need quite a lot of meat for the studs to seat in, otherwise they'd go right through the casing of the tire.

    Clearance is going to be your biggest challenge. You pretty much need knobbies in order to have enough meat to run the studs into. You may need to remove your front fender, and will want to take a close look at clearance between the rear tire and the swing arm. I think Continental may make TKC 80s in those sizes, but I'm not sure.

    Be sure to post pics if you do it. Riding in snow is a blast. :D My bike didn't seem to have any less traction on snow and ice than it did on wet pavement. Watch out for concrete though! :eek1

    I guess I'll probably have to pull the rear hugger as well. Not a huge deal. I already planned on doing something different with the fender to prevent the front wheel from tossing too much crap onto the headers and radiator. I need to come up with a way to cover up the tires a bit too since studded tires are technically illegal here (but rarely enforced and minor penalty).

    Ironically (to me anyway), while I am willing to risk trying to ride a motorcycle in the winter on snow and ice, I am very hesitant to try to drive my old RWD, no-ABS, no locking diff (I think) Porsche 944 I picked up in May in the winter.

    I imagine they'd look at a motorcycle in the snow pretty closely.

    I should clarify that they are not illegal to use here depending on where you live. If you live here, you can't run them. If you live a few hours north or in any of the adjacent provinces, you're good. I suppose I could bypass it by becoming friendly with someone north and change the address on my license to theirs but that's more hassle than I'm willing to go through.

    They might look at it more closely. If they do, I'll pay the fine and limit my riding to off road or at least less patrolled areas.

    We just started studding today. A friend of mine is a veteran Num Bum 24 hour racer, and he recommended running a Cheng Shin C755. Super cheap tire, but he says it awesome because it doesn't chunk like a lot of other MX tires. He runs 4 of the long screws through each knob, and into another cut up street tire lining the inside. They also had a box of the shorter ice screws, so I bought them and we set to it. The first set is going on this guy's 530. We are just going to be screwing around on a nice big pond where he works.

    I plan to stud up a set of Dunlop 606s for my KLR this winter. Does anyone have any experience with the Aerostich studs and these tires?

    I built an ice bike from a Yama 250 a couple years ago. These studs work great. Easy to install and not one ripped out. I don't ride it off ice and I put a drop of crazy glue on each one during the install just in case. Highly recommended. :clap

    Good to know, thanks! I've also used a drop of Gorilla Glue when I put ice screws in, and it helps a lot to keep them in place.

    I've got a full winter with the Aerostich studs.

    New Dunlop 606s all studded up.

    They did work very well after adding a few more in the front tire.

    My question is what to do now. Do folks simply remove these until the next winter or keep these tires as "winter" tires and order up a new set. I'm not sure how well the bit will bite these for the removal/install. They are obviously ground down some since the start of the winter.

    I use the off-road studs. I leave them in the tires, and consider them my 'winter tires'. I've used them about 6 seasons now and have never lost one.
    I would like to stud up a set for the DRZ to be used on-road. Can you tell me what size studs you used? I know there are a number of sizes to choose from, and would like some input. Thanks.....jkm

    I went with 200 of these:

    #4706 Low Profile A (8.7 x 12.4mm, Base penetrates tire 10.5mm, tip protrudes from tire 1.9mm

    I need a few more in the rear and I would likely go with the 4707 in the rear if I was to do it over again. I just need to decide what to do with them now. Either leave them in for a winter tire or remove them.

    Just in case anyone is interested.

    After a fairly aggressive run with a bit of spinning yesterday covering everything from dry pavement to ice to snow to dry dirt road to mud I seem to have lost two studs in the back tire. Two more were getting loose.

    Tonight I removed all remaining studs from the rear and replaced the front tire. My plan is to keep the studded front as my winter tire and re-stud a new 606 rear when the time comes. The studs came out pretty much as easy as they went in.

    Just finished studding up a new Dunlop 606 but used 4707 in the rear this time. The same front with 4706s. Hope to get out this weekend and try it out.

    I was looking for boot studs because I cross a lot of snow covered rocks where I hunt and I cam across these. I don't know if they are the manufacturer, but they do offer tons of sizes. They even have a detail link by each stud that shows the height and depth of each type.
