Some new year progress on the Wastelander Aprilia. Matt Seret got damn far on the aluminum tail section. He decided to make it all one piece, which is killer. The aluminum scoops will get added and you can see by the Sharpie drawing that we're going to add a mesh insert to each side. He also refined and finished the seat pan.

I finished up the oil cooler guard and put mesh inserts in the intake scoops and the new carbon fiber side covers. I also drilled and brushed the aluminum radiator guards. The master cylinder skid plate needed holes and and also got installed.

    Getting closer!

Wastelander Aprilia progress - little bits.

Worked on a few small parts today. First I mounted the reserve fuel canister holder I made. It uses Velcro straps that I sewed all by my little self. It tucks nicely and well-hidden behind the new license plate bracket.

I also mounted some amber bulbs inside the taillights to act as turn signals. They won't be bright, but I never use them anyway. Just keeping legal. I use hand signals or fingers. The'll get glued in and finished.

Last, but not least, I got pretty far gabbing up a simple cargo rack. It will consist of four raised bars on the tail. It's just made for small stuff like a sweatshirt or a six pack. I started with a 3/8" rod, cut it to the sizes I needed, drilled and tapped two holes each, cut down sections of all-thread, then put the sections of rod into the lathe and gave them rounded ends. The aluminum bushings were round-filed and will act as standoffs for the rods. Next they'll get welded in, cleaned up and powder coated black wrinkle finish.

I got the frames for the side panel openings cut out last night. They will have the same stainless mesh as the other openings.

I laid the pattern out on the computer with all of the centers marked. I transferred them to the aluminum and used a hole saw to cut the inside corners. Then I cut thereat of the insides out with a jigsaw and filed it until it was good.

Then I scribed the outer edge by racing the inside edge with calipers, then cut the outside with the jigsaw and filed again.

I'm pretty stoked on how they came out, but they need just a little more cleaning up, then a brushed finish.

Another step forward on the Wastelander Aprilia. Last night I cut the holes in the tail for the mesh openings. Then I mated up the frames I cut last week with the new openings, clamped them and punched the holes for the rivets. It's getting there.

I'm not sure if he'll accept that for payment, but I do know the current owner.

You can find tons of photos all over the Internet.

Got the seat foam glued up the other night and started trimming it up. I've never built the foam for a seat, so I'm learning as I go.

Sorry for the crappy phone pics, I forgot my camera.

I wouldn't bother apologizing about the pics, they look as good as usual and are certainly better quality than my old Sony Cybershot camera pictures.

The bike is looking great :clap

Saw that project on the custom fighter forum also. Bad ass project! can't wait to see where it goes. Love the sheet metal work. Reminds me when I was studying aeronautical fab...

    Keep up the quality work!

I have forgotten my camera the past few nights of working on the Wastelander, but I do have these few from my phone.

I got the tail drilled and then test-fit the rack. I also finished the top of the headlight surround that is pretty much just there to cover the crazy amount of wiring that used to be housed in the fairing. Over the weekend I dropped the bike off at the upholstery shop to button up the seat. It's supposed to be done this week.

I'll get more shots when it's back at the shop, but pretty much all of the fab work is done. It's time for prep and paint!

OH, I guess I do have a couple more tidbits...

Biltwell Inc. sent me this killer bag to test and review for my online mag (www.dirtyhero.com) and it may find a home on the bike.

Plus I messed around with a quick mockup of the paint. The top-facing surfaces will have a racing stripe/panel that's black with a gold outline.

Looking good. That rack reminds me of spaceship laser guns. You could go a bit Star Wars if you were so inclined!

    Some inspiration:
