I would say that definitely falls in the ADV bike class.. Come on out and join the fun. I dont think anyone would have any issues.. The 600CC rule was designed to keep 600CC dirt bikes out of the adv class
Heads up to any of you riding 990/950 adv bikes, the passenger footpegs and mounts belong at home. A buddy trapped his leg back inside his and suffered badly.
The Pirelli Scorpion Rally is a great set. I'm not sure about the 950 beasts but these tires are super on my 640. I always thought the MT21s were sketchy both on pavement and in the dirt. You might not think a real knobby like the Rally front would work or last on pavement but it is better for traction in the dirt, wet & dry pavement, and lasts as long as the MT21. The rear is even better.
OK, after talking to someone racing the adventure bike class next weekend I think I'm going to bring the BMW 650 as well as my wr250f. I'll make my desition Saturday.

I did swap out the 1/2 worn out TKC80 for this desert tire, not so much street legal, perfect.
That 650 Looks very capable. Nice bike!. Ill be looking for the Shark.

This one takes a little less currage than my old KTM 950 did. I'm hoping it feels at home in Odessa, I'll find out Saturday. Any guesses on how many bikes will be in the Adventure bike class? Any predictions on what the winner will be riding. I'm guessing a 950SE, but as you know its 90% rider 10% bike (unfortunatly for me ) If you see a bike like this in Odessa I can garrantee it's mine so come over and say hi.
Since it is only 50 or so miles, my guess (or wish I had one) is a KTM 690 ~ although your shark sure looks bbbbbbbbad to the bone. :tb
My hats off to all the brave soles that braved the race yesterday on thier adventure bikes. After riding the "Poker Race" Saterday I opted not to race my BMW Sunday. I was happy to have finnished the 100 mile race on my Yamaha 250. On my second lap I saw the KTM Adventure S that went into the water, and my heart sank. I hope the rider was OK, I hope they got bike out OK. I'd be devistated if that happend to my BMW (not that it would be OK with my dirt bike, but it would be easier to live with). If the owner is in the Seattle area and there's anything I can do to help get the bike fixed PM me. I had my KTM 950 apart more times than I care to remember.

I seen one yellow GS800 make it to the 39 mile marker.
I would like to know who the rider on the SE is who went through the end of the 2nd wave bomb is. Anyone know him?
I know 88NX250 placed third in the adventure bike class on the GS800 owned by Touratech. He said he saw the KTM go into the drink. I can't amigine hanging off a $15K bike like an outrigger as I passed this spot to keep it out of the water. He did say the power was great through the mud
Or even the Ironman. I saw a guy at the hotdog stop with a 990, told him he had some gonads. To me it would be like drifting a log truck: "you can do that? good..." :eek1
Oh man that was some "fun" and there were definetly a few spots out there that would have taken a small army to get a R12GS through. That beautiful 950S GOOOO!!! had 600 miles on it before the start of the race. I was about 10 bikes behind him in the bottle neck when he went into the drink. There were 2 rocks in that tight spot by the river that were a problem for the big bikes, the first was about 2 feet tall and dirt bikes had no trouble with their wheels in the rut near it becuase they were narrow enough slide past. It looked like his tank pressed on the rock and put him off-ballance and there was nowhere for his downhill foot. I had to get off the F800 and stradle the rock so I could lean the bike out (over the water, away from the rock) and inch past it. The second rock was big and flat, small bikes could go around on the low side but big bikes could only go over.
I don't remember the rider's name but he was a really great sport. He even stood in the water and helped me pass the F800 through where he went off.
I had a few interesting moments in the race:
1) I was MID pee break when the start cannon fired.
2) Breaking off my footpeg/sidestand at ~mile 20.
3) Bypassing the sidestand switch and finishing the race using the clutch side passenger peg.
I was running a helmet camera for the first half of the race and even caught most of those special moments on video.
I finished a distant third place, Darryl from Cyclops (950S) put in an incredible ride and finished with his handlebars nearly broken free from the bike after a bad tumble. Jeremy (950SE) nearly caught him at the finish when Darryl was limping home.

I have been sweeping the "rabbit ears" section of this race course for the club the last seven years. It is perhaps the fastest and rockiest section of all on this Odessa course, no matter which direction it is run. I have had my 950 on the course previously, therefore have an idea what you had to deal with. I was standing within 20 feet of Jeremy when he took off from the start. He simply left every rider around him in a hail of roost. It seemed entire sagebrush were being transplanted on a mass scale by his rear Dunlop. I caught Darryl on the uphill steps a mile past the trestle, where he could have easily been teaching at a KTM rally clinic.
Very disappointed in myself for not mounting the GoPro to catch this phenomenal action. Simply getting a bike this size around that course is an incredible undertaking, and you guys did all us here at OC very proud. Kudos!
