And that is exactly what happened here, just a few months earlier. In fact, I could still see the cumpled wreckage down at the bottom. That must have been quite a ride :huh

they were improving the road by making it wider
they were using dynamite to do it.
I was helping by taking big boulders and rolling them down the hill in to the canyon below. You should have seen those big rocks fly!

Here is my $8 a night room back at the hostel in Sorata
It was $6 but the guy changed the price when it came time to pay.
    I didn´t put up a fuss.
The view was worth more than that

Here´s the view looking the other way from the hostel
Those are 6000 + meter peaks
    That´s 20,000 feet
So close, I could almost touch them

Riding back over the 14,000 foot pass to La Paz
It rained the night before in Sorata and there was more snow along side the road but thank God not in the road........that treat was waiting for me later that day in La Paz

I was heading in to El Alto, which is a sketchy suburb of La Paz. It is near the airport. The elevation is about 13,000 feet there.
It is strange because the whole area around it is flat.....kind of like our Great Plains in the US
But it is up 13,000 feet.
The only indications that you are up that high is that it is cold, the air is very thin and my GPS is telling me so
The sun was out but there was a dark cloud hanging over La Paz and in the direction I was heading. I thought I might be getting wet. I was not looking forward to that since the temperture was only 50 degrees in the afternoon.
Right when I arrived in the middle of town in some of the worst traffic I have seen the entire trip, it started to hail. I thought it was great at first. I had my helmet on and the big pellets didn´t hurt me. But it really started to come down and the streets turned to ice. My tires front and rear were sliding around at 1 MPH. I put my feet down as outriggers and made my way over to the curb, parked my bike and stood under and umbrella and watched the town turn to a winter wonderland

there was so much hail on the road that I was not going anywhere
    and it was getting dark
but in the end, as I mentioned earlier, everything worked out
you did read my earlier post didn´t you????

I covered my accounts of it earlier here.

It was one of the highlights of my trip so far
I have some great pictures and video to post but I am heading to dinner now.

Come ride along the >Road of Death with Kathe and I
The road is carved out of the side of the cliff and there is water falling off on to the road and on to our heads
