    Woody,

Firstly, thanks a lot for the feedback, it's clear you are the technical authority when it comes to wheels.

Quick question, can I use GS/GSA wheel rims on a KTM 690 to get to a 19/17 setup for tubeless tyres. I like that idea as there is no need to rely on sealant around the spokes. Are there any other alternatives that avoid sealing around the spokes. Are the rims from GS or alternatives classed as good quality for ADV touring. I assume the GS rims must be good given the track record on a heavy bike.

You stated that one of the cons would be a slight loss of offroad performance. How significant would that be to a novice off road rider (who needs all the help available). The reality is that in most cases I will be on sealed roads, For a bit of context I've crossed the Andes a number of times on a GSA and not had any issues.

I'm now starting to set up for a possible Russia trip which is why I have gone to the 690.

    thanks,

    dave

Hi Woody,I am in the process of building a cafe based on a '84 twin shock R100 bmw.For the rear wheel I am looking to use a hub from 77 RS ,X laced to a rim from a 94 R100R. Do you think this or something similar would be possible? Thanks.

Just shipped my wheel to Woody's yesterday. Looking forward to retiring my wobbly, bent, dented and chipped stock front rim. :thumb

    hi Leget

no problem for us ,,,maybe a problem for you....the pickle yo re in is converting a rear rim that had a bigger diameter and wider hub than the front be mounted/laced to a narrower/smaller diameter hub....

Hence the spoke angles will not be the same ,,you'll have the spokes bowing inwardin both directions....leading to premature spoke /wheel failure...:deal:eek1:huh:cry

send the compnents out and we'll re-angle/re-counter sink the nipple holes for perfect alignment =$30 ea rim

i highly recommend asking for a superlace kit cuz the spokes and nipple for custom vs superlace are essentially the same $$$

Psssst ya can be frugal and order Zartan nipples and SAVE circa $20 per set:eek1:eek1

turnaround time a day or two usually
if we lace n true custom =$100/wheel [includes re-drilling /re-angling]

SUPERLACING is $111/wheel with improved lace patterns nipple sizes and one year warranty:deal

    holler when you are ready

Awesome, Thank you... good to hear that you can make this work.
I'll contact you about shipping the hub and rim to get fitted for the superlace kit.

    :clap:clap:clap

    One more question::ear
I plan to powdercoat the hub and rim, should this be done before or after i send them to you?
(I would guess it should be done after since you'll be doing some drilling)

the better sequence is to do all the prep work/drilling the prep hub for powdercoating and then re-lace it:deal

How much for a cush hub setup reusing the stock wheel for an XR650r? And how much more for a heavy duty black wheel and heavy duty spokes?

We can re-use your oem rim, which is a 32 hole D.I.D. and lace it to the RAD Cush hub using stainless steel spokes/nipples, it would be 788 + shipping, and include's the billet hub w/ sprocket carrier, superlaced with heavy duty stainless steel spokes/nipples. If you wanted an 18 x 2.15 excel black rim, it would be 998 + shipping for the full wheel.

If you would like to order anything, it's best to call us at 303-936-0232 or email us at woodyswheelworks@gmail.com

    Thanks Zach

I am in the process of swapping forks from kawasaki's conventional 41mm forkt to KTM WP 4357 forks. But there is a slight problem. When I have installed a Kawasaki wheel in KTM forks, it all fitted like it was made to fit. And so I thought. After measuring the distance from each fork to the centre strip on the tyre I got 1mm off-set left-right. :eek1

Here is my question to you:

Can this 1mm of off-set cause any safety or handling issues?

    Here is the picture:

FYI,,,when the wheel isn't centered you wi ll notice that the bike wants to fall to one side easier and be harder to flip into a corner/turn in the other direction....is that dangerous???could be,,,the more off set the contact point is from thepivot- axisthe more difficult it will be to have balanced turning in either direction...

Rx #1 = centering the rim,,in your case moving the rim 1mm to the left when you sit on bike,,,any wheelsmith can re-center the rim,,,If your wheel is true and all your spokes are evenly tensioned,,and you have access to the proper spoke wrench,,you could safely do it yourself:eek1:huh,i'd start by loosening every nipple 1/4 turn on the right side and follow it up by tightening every nipple 1/4 turn on the left,,,i bet that will put ya in the ball park:deal
there are other ways BWOE maching the axle spacers,,,adding a shim on axle all far more complicated,

NOTE,,the above suugestion is based on the assumption that the rest of the components fit properly . ie that your disc is centered in the caliper when you tightened your axle bolt

    good luck

    :freaky

PS we charge $35-55 to re-true the wheel depending on how out of wack it is.....re-locating the off set is included:wink:

Thanks for the detailed information. I was getting all sorts of information on other forums, and was confused what effect will it actually have. I would like to send you my wheel, but unfortunately I am half way around the world from you. I don't have the guts to re-true the wheel, so I will draw some spacer's up and get them machined at work. I am still in the process of making a caliper bracket as kawasaki caliper doesnt fit KTM forks.

    Thanks for your help!

If something is not ok with forks, twisted mostly, and wheel"s axle isn"t perpendicular to both forks rods, distance from the picture will differ.

hi ,couple questions.. I have a 2014 f800gs adventure and wanted to upgrade to a 18'' rear.

1.best width choice for front and rear . mostly on road but like to get off road as much as i can. was thinking 18x3.5 and 21x1.85.

    2. if wanted to get aggressive how much differance is the 18x2.5 then the 3.5. and is the 2.5 strong enough for the gsa loaded 2up ?

3.can you use the anodized nipples from rad and powder coated spokes?

IF you are wanting the 18'' for more off-road and are on the road quite a bit, the 21 x 1.85, 18 x 3.5 will be best with 90/90-21 and 140-150 x18 tire's. The key thing is keeping the tire pressure up to avoid any issues with rim's bending easier and to keep the tire's from wearing out quicker.

The 1.6 x 21 and 2.5 x 18 would be best if you want to have the strongest option for aggressive off-road riding and plan on using it more off-road than on-road.

We can use the anodized nipples with the heavy duty p/c stainless steel spokes, they aren't as strong as the stainless steel nipples and do loosen up easier than the stainless nipples we use.

If you would like to order anything, it's best to give us a call at 303-936-0232 or email us at woodyswheelworks@gmail.com

    Thanks Zach

    Hey Woody

When are you going to start lacing 9x0 hubs onto the new 1190 Adventure tubeless rims?:ear
