    Hey, Duck...
    Stepping up to the plate:D

I have ridden nogat but not for many years. I have attened rallies and signed petitions that say helmut laws should not be made law. I still believe that even though I nearly never leave the driveway whithout a helmut on.

    If I wrote the laws....

People could choose to wear a lid or not. If you chose not to your insurance is 5X more (or whatever the bean counters compute) I think that would be fair. Lidless folks get a choice that they have to pay for.
If you check the box marked yes I allways wear a lid and then crash whithout one you get screwed on the bills...Or you can't sue the other guy or?????

Just my opinion. Many holes in it, but, it holds more water than many others do:D

Just curious - why would you want them to pay 5x more in insurance? I think some data would be in order: Do lidless riders have more accidents? Do lidless riders have more fatalities? I don't know what the data would reveal, but I bet it's not as clear cut as we imagine.

i've worked a bunch of mc wrecks and have wrecked as well. i left the e.r. without a scratch to show for my stupidity(i was riding beyond my skill level). smacked my head, shoulder, brused ribs, very swollen ankle, sore hip. i was wearing full on gear. still, i was out of work for a week. there would have been a lot of road rash had i been not wearing gear. i will not ride without it.

the skin damage to the non gear wearing riders is severe. palms of the hands ground off. exposed bone. big time facial trauma with the puddin' bowl helmets. all that comes with giant medical bills. wearing proper gear can reduce the severity of injury immensely to the point of hobbling away from a get off rather than getting loaded into a bambulance.

i think its safe to say all of the people, including me, did not plan on wrecking the day they went down.

stay vigilant and wear your gear
the people who love you and care about you appreciate it as well.

    ride well and stay safe.

Wearing the gear is like packing your lunch instead of eating in the cafeteria. It is a hassle at first, but it becomes a habit. Soon you wouldn't have it any other way. Does this diminish the joy of the ride? For myself it enhances it. When I'm on my bike I vanquish everything from my mind except what relates to riding the bike. It's a form of meditation, if you will.

How about racers ? They ride a little riskier right ? Do you think they'd ride like that with jeans and hiking boots on ? People might be reevaluating you right now.

    Why 5X the insurance??????

Just throwing a # out there with no basis in research or stats. OK, some basis as gear will reduce the cost of an accident a large amount in MOST cases.

I just think that the freedom to do what you want should come with the cost associated with that freedom.

Smokers tend to pay more for health care etc.

19 year lod males pay way more for insurance than I do....
Why, cuz they tend to crash into stuff on a much more regular basis.

One of those helmet studies I posted said the helmet law in LA is based on whether or not you have at least $10k worth of insurance. So apparently you aren't the only one that is thinking in those terms.

You are hanging out with the wrong chicks.

Maybe it's the type of scars. I have some cool ones, but they aren't due to injury.

When I feel that way, I time it. It takes less than 2 minutes to put on all of my gear. Seems worth it to me.

I would never go without all my gear, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a hassle sometimes. There's times I don't want to spend more money on it, or to pile on the gear for a short trip, peel it on or off at a restaurant or store, etc.

But, I wear it and will continue to do so. No alternative, really.

You nailed it. No one in this thread is not advocating ATGATT, but we're just venting about the *sometimes* hassle of it :D
