Has anyone permanently removed the auto decompression mechanism?

If so, what have been the consequences? Was anything really been given up?

I'm kind of tired of hearing the thing rattle around in there. Plus, it occasionally kicks in to kill the motor if idle speed drops below 1,600 RPMs for whatever reason.

I know how to use the manual lever...so what's the big deal about NOT having an automatic mechanism?

You can remove it and run without... The manual decomp when used properly will take the strain off the starting system much like the auto does... I would suggest to do it at the same time your servicing the cam followers and waterpump as pulling the camshaft out at that point will only be one extra step...
