Just makes cents donut?
No, you don't.
And neither do you, evidently.
The landings are more of a cross between a flair and an auto-rotation.
It's not the controlled hover a conventional vtol helicopter uses to land.
From what I have read, the big drawback to the Fairey Rotodyne was unacceptable noise levels, which led to a lack of government support to go forward.
The approach is being pursued on a small scale by the previously mentioned projects by Sikorsky, Eurocopter, and some smaller concerns. It seems that government backing is primarily toward the tilt-rotor concept.
Saw a mag article about this a couple of years ago.
So we call it a STOL instead?

That one must have a unique drive system to the main rotor. Most have only an electric motor to start the rotor spinning (often an automotive type starter motor), once in flight they auto-rotate. They're not lifting thrust rotors in the sense of a conventional helo - they're more of a dynamic wing.

Shamelessly stolen from the WTF thread:
When I read that I heard the digital voice in my head, too... I'm sick...
Cold War warriors, silent and still now, await their final block-in.

Haven't seen that footage before.
Hope he makes a speedy recovery.
He lives it on the edge, for sure...
Hope he's able to continue, once he's recovered.
