    The landings are more of a cross between a flair and an auto-rotation.

    It's not the controlled hover a conventional vtol helicopter uses to land.

    From what I have read, the big drawback to the Fairey Rotodyne was unacceptable noise levels, which led to a lack of government support to go forward.

    The approach is being pursued on a small scale by the previously mentioned projects by Sikorsky, Eurocopter, and some smaller concerns. It seems that government backing is primarily toward the tilt-rotor concept.

    That one must have a unique drive system to the main rotor. Most have only an electric motor to start the rotor spinning (often an automotive type starter motor), once in flight they auto-rotate. They're not lifting thrust rotors in the sense of a conventional helo - they're more of a dynamic wing.
