    01-05-2011 - The Goal: Get over 4-Peaks!

I knew there would be snow on 4-Peaks. It snowed just days before. And it still had a dusting on it.

Here's a closer look. The road goes to the left (North) of the Peaks. There's patchy snow there, so the road might be passable! :dunno
    [IMG]

Getting closer to the peaks. No snow on the road yet. That's a good sign. Still a ways to go though.

Hmm... Snow in the shady spots and I haven't really started climbing that much yet.

The first encounter with an icy patch. I rode through this one to get my feet wet even though I could have gone around. Little did I know what was to come!

It's getting serious now! I can get traction where it's a little slushy, but I slip and slide up this patch.

The next one is much more difficult and I'm wishing I was on a 50 and not a 950!

This is starting to get steep and with ice underneath, there's no traction. I can feel the pull toward the ditch and have to give up.

Turned around, this is about how far I made it. I had a long way to go! The guys walking came from higher up. I asked if it got better. The answer was a resounding, "No, it gets worse!"

Retreating back down. It's too snowy to top 4-Peaks today.

Looking back to the hazy valley we call Phoenix.

I tried taking a few offshoot trails on the way down. I'm always curious where they go. Mostly they lead to campsites. This one was a dead-end. :doh
    [IMG]

Another look back at the mountain that defeated me! I'll get up there again soon!

Part of the reason to get out today was to test the modified Kolpin, Hippo Hands knock-offs. They work, but they are a little tight for the extra controls of a DS bike (horn, turn signals, etc...).

That fire isn't going to be doing good things for the PM2.5!

The other thing I was trying out was my Battery Tender to Heated Liner adapter. It works! This location sucks for adjusting the heat on the fly though.

The famous fountain of Fountain Hills!

One side trail/road took me south to Cottonwood Creek. I hadn't been this way before. There are still good views of my nemesis mountain!

And other than the sand from Cottonwood Creek to very near the Old Bush Highway, it's a good trail!

Couldn't quite make it past 5500'.

    The route for the day.

    01-08-11 - The Goal: Verde Hot Springs - 2-up!

The little blue lines at the top of the map are about where the Verde Hot Springs are.

We took a little side-trip to the top of Humboldt Mountain where there is some sort of ground based aircraft guidance system (the big dome). It's a neat spot. On the way up, there was a guy parked on the road in a truck. A little further up the road were his targets! He set up target practice along the length of the road! :eek1 :huh
    [IMG]

There's snow on top of Humboldt! That makes sense though. It's ~5000' at the top.

The surprise was seeing snow and icy patches on 7-Springs Road!

This could get interesting coming back up!

At Bloody Basin we could tell we missed the group that went around the Sheep Bridge loop. Who was running the trials tire?? :lol3

There was definitely snow on the rim. We're glad we aren't going that way!

My rear brake was toast after the Alaska trip last summer. We did one more ride on it and then switched to the shiny, new floater! :evil I like it!

Heading north from Bloody Basin, you go into and out of several canyons. I don't recall which one this is, but it had some snow on the ground still. It was easy to go around on the left, so no problem yet.

As we went further north, the bike was squirming around a lot. It's not a good feeling to have 550lbs and 100hp squirming around under you. Especially with a passenger! :eek1 The ground was finally too soaked and soft. End of the line!

It looks so nice and flat and even kind of dry in places. That's just what it wants you to think though.

Thanks, always good to see other parts of the continent that ideally need checking out in person ! Nice bike, btw!

~10 miles from the goal and we have to turn around. :cry
    [IMG]

You know mud is bad when it's flinging up onto your handlebars.

At least 2-up there's a little extra weight providing traction!

    That is some sticky mud!

Slight correction... 600lb bike! :lol3 We must have had an extra 15-20lbs of mud built up on each tire!

So that's what a chain guard is for! :D
    [IMG]

150 width Mefo tire turned into a 180 width racing slick!

We removed as much mud as we could with sticks and took "drier" ground out. Mainly we were rock hopping between muddy patches. Once back to the road we had to cross it to the dry side and then make a sharp left to line up with the one good line. I didn't want to let my passenger know how many times I almost lost it.

Back on drier ground we collected sticks for some more mud removal.

Those lugs clean out pretty quick when you spin the hell out of the tire on dry ground! :evil
    [IMG]

The way out was pretty uneventful. We went back the way we came and the icy patches of 7-Springs didn't cause a problem. Hooray! :clap

The tracks looked pretty fresh. I figured it was you guys. Oh well! Another group must have been up there recently too!

That was Billy/bhorocks running a trials on his 525. We came though there around 10:45 am. We were running behind after a late start and minor crash on the ice at 7 springs crossing.

That ice was something! as I entered the 1st one I was still engine braking ever so slightly & felt it. I very gently picked up the throttle on exit & it reved like I was in neutral. Refokus went through one of them speedway style but didn't go down. You guys were about an hour behind us. We crossed the dam ~11:30.

Hey, my GPS finally decided to cooperate (newly refurbed from Garmin) and I got the track from the Verde Hot Springs attempt yesterday!

The dark blue is what we did. Red and light blue were the goals. We will make it eventually!

And the elevation profile shows that we turned around at near 4500 feet (100-ish mile mark):

Good work YS. I live at 5000' and there's still some snow patches and lots of mud here which is a good indicator of what you encountered. Next time just call me and I'll give you the "trail" conditions from my property.

That Arizona mud can be quite deceptive. I got caught up in some on Spur Cross Rd. North of Cave Creek years ago on a bike with about 900cc's less than yours. I ended up digging through it with my fingers to get the front wheel unlocked from the fender. Good times.

    Nice RR and pics. :thumb

I just read this post Yardstick. Great write up and pics. I like the part where you didn't want your passenger to know just how close you came to dumping it.........that is some good stuff. :lol3
