My buddy Dave and I took a ride out to Arizona's former route 666, "The Devil's Highway", now AZ Route 191. It's a 100 mile stretch from Clifton to Alpine with a lot of tight first gear turns.

Dave was riding his Yamaha R1 and I was on my street bike clad KTM 950 Adventure.

We made haste to get out of the Valley of the Sun before the heat was full on. Stopped in Superior.

The stretch between Safford and Three Way was STRAIGHT and climbed gently toward the mountains.

We stopped in Clifton, last chance for gas and grub for the next 100 miles. PJ's appeared to be the only place open at the time.

Dave will eat breakfast at any time throughout the day.

I choose a simple burger a fries. Both meals were very good and value priced!!

Clifton is a cool little town with a lot of history. It's located in a narrow valley along the San Francisco river. I imagine it is the main support town for the Morenci mining operation up the road.

This was a terrible angle for this shot, but Clifton has flood gates in the center of town.

Here's a better picture I found on the internet...

The Devil's Highway runs through the middle of the Morenci Copper Mine, one of the largest open pit mines in the world.

This is probably the most photographed section of the Devils Highway.

9000 feet, cold, and pine trees, quite the contrast from 107 degrees in Phoenix.

In the 100 miles between Clifton and Alpine, we passed two vehicles traveling in the same direction we were. One was Highway Patrol, who wasn't the least bit interested in us!

We hit about 10 miles of heavy rain between Alpine and Springerville. We were staying in Springerville for the night. Hungry, we headed for the renowned Java Blues Cafe for dinner and drinks.

Dave got the French Dip and onion rings.

I got the Heartbreaker and onion rings.

Thunder storms were blowing through Springerville and intermittently knocking off the power.

The next morning brought rain and wind and cold across the highlands of central Arizona. I didn't even snap one photo!

    600 miles total.

Looks like a nice trip! Was there much fire damage visible from the 191? I had a camping trip planned south of Alpine in July but then the Wallow fire...

Couldn't see much damage from the road. There was some spots where you could see burnt trees south of Alpine, but they were mixed in with green trees and lush vegetation. Didn't look like the remains from the Crown King or Flagstaff fires, but that was only what you could see from the road.
