We are approaching what has become an annual tradition in the Phoenix area: The Saturday after Thanksgiving Coke Ovens Ride! This year will be the fourth or fifth annual ride! Because the area gets hit with storms every year and there are lots of groups using the trail, it's always good to do a pre-run to check for major changes, like washouts or other blockages.

    The prerun crew:
    4play - KTM 600
    Slowred - CRF450X
Wild Bill Kelso - KTM 530
    Yardstick - KTM 530
    RWAZ - the Big RZR
Jersey Dave & his son Brandon - Two Seat RZR

Wild Bill ran out ahead while the rest of us mounted up.

We did our recon in the "normal" direction. Heading into Telegraph Canyon.

Slowred is just back from a broken collarbone and this is a rough trail. He was confident early on with a stand-up wheelie after the shutter clicked on this pic.

I was curious about an alternate route to Ajax Mine. It's fun and fast but there was a little confusion in this spot.

At the "Temple of Doom" part of the Ajax site.

Turning south at Mineral Mountain Rd. to head toward Box Canyon.

There's a slight detour with a fun obstacle on the way:

When RWAZ is behind you, don't fall! And don't slow down!

Box Canyon is ahead, but we're taking a left toward Martinez Canyon.

Hang on TIGHT, you're going for a RIDE!

    Short break.

The play hills. RWAZ came flying down this one like there weren't 2-foot deep holes in his way.

No problem with this hill full of ledges either.

Getting closer to the Coke Ovens, this hill can be tricky, up or down.

Wild Bill Kelso demonstrates the proper eject procedure.

And the safe way down if you're not sure of your balance on the rocks.

RZR's have it pretty easy as long as the line is wide enough.

Wild Bill does the inseam challenged rock dance.

And the "Faaack, another one?" look.

They look more threatening than they are.

If you hear scraping noises behind you, it's probably a RZR on this kind of obstacle.

Jersey Dave & Son still having a good time.

    At the Coke Ovens.

4play keeping tabs on the group. That's a scary combination, KTM 600 with TerrorFlex rear tire.

Slowred and RWAZ waiting on the rest.

4play had a bonus loop mapped out. I didn't have the map and found the end of this trail.

There's a little connector there, but the penalty for failure is a long trip down the side of the mountain.

We found a part of the AZ Trail toward the end of the ride. I rode another section to the north of this area on a pedal bike a few days ago.

    Canyons on our way out.

RWAZ making dust in the wash headed toward Battle Axe Rd.

    These buggies can cruise!

Overall, there's nothing too different from previous years. It should be a good time next weekend!

Nice RR! Loved the pics. I don't know why I torture myself so much, looking at all these Az trip reports. Makes me want to move down there. And I checked out your link (pedal bike). Brought back a lot of memories. Some of the best in my life actually. Last September, my buddy and I rode the entire AZT from Mexico to Utah, self supported, at race pace. Took us 9 grueling days. But I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. BEAUTIFUL country you have down there. Just incredible, really.
    Keep it comin'! More pics!

Thanks guys! That trophy really needs to find a permanent home!

Trespasser, that is a monster MTB ride, doing the whole AZ Trail. :eek1 I did a section near Flagstaff this summer. That was beautiful. The BCT has a lot of similarities to the AZ Trail, too. I still prefer the more technical challenges that South Mountain provides. Plus it's practically in my back yard. :evil
