In Arizona, at least in the Phoenix area, there is a ride that almost every dirtbiker has done at least once. The name in itself instills fear in some and joy in others. It is almost a rite of passage for new riders because its long enough to test a rider's endurance and technical enough to test their skills but also easy enough to bail and go back if necessary. Well... NO MORE! The world famous "Back Way to Crown King" is now TOO smooth.

Slowred (CRF 450X), Refokus (KTM 450 EXC) and I (KTM 530 EXC) rode the Smooth Way to Crown King.

We passed a lot of quads, jeeps and these:

This hill got so bad that people created a bypass.

Now the bypass that Slowred is lining up for is harder than the regular line!

Slowred tops out on the "hard line".

This is a "rough spot" now. :rolleyes

We cruised into Crown King in about the fastest time we have ever made the run. There is still one section of rocky stream bed that could trip someone up.

Anyone who can't make it to Crown King via "The Back Way" now, will have to live with this humiliation:

Oh yes! Scooters made it up the back way to Crown King! It is THAT smooth! :eek1
    [IMG]

Check out the handy spare tire on the one to the right.

Their hood ornaments made it! Duct tape is a nice touch.

We were using sledgehammers to pound finishing nails.

After lunch at the mill we headed to Towers Mountain.

Someone hung balloon animals from this tower:

From 7,000 feet there's a nice view of Lake Pleasant way off in the distance.

Little patches of snow still hide in the shady spots on the north side of the hills. Lake Pleasant nearly blends into the haze.

A distant house just off a trail we will ride shortly.

We took a short detour near Minehaha on a trail I scouted for a short distance before. It's on the GPS! :D
    [IMG]

The trail continues, but we couldn't channel our inner Taddy Blazusiak or Graham Jarvis today and turned back.

Something reached out from the reeds and grabbed Refokus's bike! :eek1
    [IMG]

    It pulled hard!

But it was no match for Refokus's desire not to ride bitch on one of our bikes. :lol3
    [IMG]

The getaway. And the reminder that trials tire roost is sad.

We passed this thing that I still have not fully figured out. It looks like some kind of heat exchanger, but it must be the least efficient model ever! Maybe that's why it sits in the middle of the forest re-integrating into the earth. :dunno

The rest of the ride back to the trucks was high speed dirt and fairly uneventful. It is going to take a lot of rain to return this ride to its former glory.

I snapped a few pics. Here we are preparing for a great ride up to Crown King the back way. Formerly known as the hard way.[IMG][/IMG]

    The famous CK rock.

At the Mill in CK we found some fellow AdvRiders on "scooters" that had just cruised up to CK "the Hard way":rofl

One was a 200cc 2T, the other an overbored 150cc, both had a few miles on them!

Yardstick had a side trip scouted out. We followed and ended up here, where the trail became "technically doable" as our own Nightstalker would say.

This is apparently the "good line":eek1 We retreated.

On the way out we passed this structure. I believe the address was The Hills Have Eyes Rd. Better to keep moving!

It was a really fun ride with good buds and great weather. However, until the rains put some difficulty back into "the back way to CK" its a pretty tame cruise. Maybe next time we'll ride scooters!

How about a route? I'd like to try your 'right of passage', particularly because it's smooth! I'll be there in a couple weeks to try. But I only have one day. If not, I'll do the verde river dam thingie.

I can probably dig one up, but we know it so well, I didn't even bring a GPS.

Well, looking at my photos there is really nothing that is different than Slowreds and Yardsticks, just the angle. It was a fun ride yesterday that I thoroughly enjoyed and it was pretty fast. Passing the quads and razr's was a little hair raising a few times, but that was also a lot of fun. The two scooters in CK were really cool and the enthusiasm of the two riders was first class. They had a blast riding them up the hill. The trip back down was dusty and quick, trying to keep up with Allen and Terry is not an easy task. Let's do it again soon, but this time, lets rent scooters and have a race...........:lol3

How about a race to CK with a mini-bike class and a Chinese scooter class and a spending limit of no more than $500 for the bike and any mods. :evil

Thanks for this report! I had read awhile back the route had been "smoothed out", and we had planned to ride it in a few weeks, but I was still slightly concerned, with us being "older" folks, with smaller (225) bikes. Now we can be fully confident and have a wonderfully-nice-not-peeing-in-our-pants ride !:rofl

I want in on this one! Which day is your one day? On second thought, before we hijack this thread, PM me and AZTom or start a new thread so we can have it all figured out by the time you get here!

I wonder if my son would mind if I borrowed his CRF50 :rofl. Poor little thing probably wouldn't make it up the first couple of hills.
