The idea was to gather a bunch of talented big-bike riders and replicate the ride that took out Mil-T's V-strom last year.

    This year, the players are:

    KTMSER - KTM 950 SE
    CrashDBad - KTM 950 SE
    goatdog - KTM 950 SE
    Yardstick - KTM 950 SE
    Dillon@Zenmoto - KTM 950 Adventure
    Big-E - KTM 990 Adventure
    ybracing - KTM 950 Adventure

We met at the Cowboy Cafe in Wickenburg to get some breakfast and let the sun come up. It turned out to be a cooler morning than some of us anticipated!

Big-E showing off his preferred trail snack, BACON!

Last year, Alamo road bit hard. We didn't sustain any casualties on that road this year. Only dust, and lots of it! Big-E stretches the legs of the LC8 where Alamo turns to Wickeburg road.

I found terminal velocity on Wickenburg road. At about 112mph indicated, the force from the wind resistance balances the thrust from the Dunlop 908 RR tire. Any more power applied only spins the tire up... :dunno

This thread's other potential title was, "The Eastern Arizona Gas Station Tour". Four thirsty Super Enduros meant we stopped at almost every gas station we saw, including this one at a small trailer park east of Alamo Lake.

They were having a fly-in poker run at the trailer park.

The historic Brown's Crossing has remained under water for years, according to the Alamo Lake State Park. For part of the year, there is still a way to cross north of the lake. Not this time, however. We were forced to take the southern route around.

KTMSER has a way of making pavement exciting.

    50 mph wheelies! :clap

The Super Enduro does have a light front end! :evil

A quick turn and we're on Powerline Rd.

It was a primitive road last year when I tried it. In the past year it has been straightened in spots, cleared of most of the sugar sand and smoothed out considerably.

We cruised until a gate a few miles from Midway.

It was plenty early to take a side trip to Swansea! Onward!

A few bends, hills and turns later, we were at the historic copper mining town of Swansea!

The kiosk at the entrance warns of open mine shafts. Most that we could see had grates over the top. They make for great views straight down the shafts!

Several other shafts extend into the earth surrounding the primary mine.

Ruins of the former city are everywhere!

The smelter towers above while Big-E makes his way toward it.

    Sign below the smelter.

It's an impressive sight. Unfortunately shooters have blasted a lot of it away.

Wikipedia has an article that explains the Reverberatory Furnace.

Big-E channels The Thinker (about lunch!)

Another view of the pockmarked old furnace.

It would have been even more impressive to see whole. Dillon@Zenmoto has a seat on what was probably once the ceiling.

The entire wall on this side came down in one piece!

From the hill, you really get a sense of how big Swansea once was!

A few of the guys have a pow-wow and decide they've had enough archeology for the day!

Just one more mining remnant pic before I go! :D

On the way into the Swansea site, KTMSER spotted Natural Arch.

On the road out, CrashDBad picked up what could be a bit of history. Unfortunately he did it with his rear tire!

Flat 908 RR tires don't look a lot different than ones with pressure as we have found out in the past few weeks! :lol3
    [IMG]

    Nailed!

KTMSER at work with the irons while ybracing digs for a wrench.

That's not much of a hole, but it's enough.

KTMSER shows off his manicure. :lol3 With more tread, the short rusty piece of nail might not have caused a problem. But then it might have worked its way in over time too.

    Dillon@Zenmoto lends a hand.

    CrashDBad waits for inflation.

With the newly tubed wheel mounted back up, it was time to get moving! CrashDBad's misfortune extended to his Super Enduro's battery that had discharged beyond the point of being able to spin up the LC8. :doh Push starting one of these beasts is tough, to say the least. It was tried. It didn't work. :lol3 Ybracing came to the rescue with jumper cables! And we were off again!

We took the high speed, direct route to Parker and then up Hwy 95 into Havasu to find the Italian place that I recommended so highly, closed! They don't open until 4 p.m. :doh And we found out KTMSER's battery was cooking due to a fried regulator!

Mexican it is! Big-E doesn't look too disappointed. :D KTMSER is on the phone looking for a rescue and the rest dig in!

KTMSER has experienced this problem before and isn't going to let it slow him down!

Yep, that's a car battery on the rear rack! We thought his front end was light before! :eek1
    [IMG]

    A little creative wiring.

With some trick, quick-release battery clamps.

    And we're ready to roll!

Next, we needed a short, fast way back to the middle of the state. The return route from last year was pretty far north and includes a lot of asphalt. :puke1 I had another route north, but wasn't sure about the conditions. :huh The way we came was familiar, but what fun would that be? KTMSER was confident enough to take the way we came in last year - a 6+ mile gravelly wash!

    CrashDBad looking for a break.

The singletrack flowed well and mostly ran the direction we wanted to go. Eventually we dropped back into the wash and continued on. Once on hard ground I looked back to make sure everyone was going the right direction.

Big-E was right on my tail, so I missed him. Goatdog leads CrashDBad, Dillon@Zenmoto and ybracing.

We zig-zagged back and forth on some wash, some hardpack and some graded, high speed gas line roads to get to Chicken Springs Rd. into Wikieup.

    Wildlife!

KTMSER demonstrated that a high profile tire and the Adventure Spec, G-iT skidplate for the Super Enduro don't agree! Mine, in the background, has some light scuffs from the 606 front tire too. Scary!

KTMSER arranged a rescue in Wickenburg. I don't think I've ever been between Wikieup and Wickenburg that fast before.

With the car battery removed, we heave-hoed the bike into the back of Mrs. KTMSER's truck for the ride home.

From Wickenburg I had almost another 90 miles home, making it just over 500 miles for the day!

Riding, exploring, fixing and eating from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. and enjoying every minute! It was a great day! :clap

I just went through Swansea while on my way home from Death Valley. I was out there Monday and wondered who made the tracks up the side of this tailings pile. :lol3

It takes commitment to get up this early. I'm sure CrashDBad had some upset neighbors with four of us rolling out at 4:30.

It was colder then I planned for but warmed up later on.

One pump for 7 thirsty KTM's. I think we drained it.
