hi everyone:wave . ready for another Baja ride report? this ride started Dec 27 in mild rainy Ontario and ended this past sunday back in freezing cold, snowy, dull, gray Ontario. winter sucks!!!!
lets get started, but first I have to thank the ADVrider community for much advice and guidance. been planning this trip for over a year and without the wisdom from inmates, the ride would not have been as great as it turned out to be. thanks to all who have shared their Baja experiences and filed ride reports. honourable mentions go to "Crashmaster", "Sandmar" and "Springs" (from Snort'n Boar racing). thanks for the maps, advice and the hospitality.
I'm Dave ('06 12GS) and the other guy is my very cool 18 year old nephew Steven. last spring i mentioned to my riding friends that I was going to do a ride to Baja in Jan '09 and all were welcome. steven asked if he could come if he got a bike? sure why not! might want to get some gear and a license too as he has no prior riding experience. off he goes and buys an '08 KLR and signs up for a ridng course. Steven's dad, my brother Tim, is an ex expert class enduro rider and from very early in Steven's riding career it was clear he inherited the riding genes. Steven road as much as he could putting 12000 km on his bike in 6 months. that included a ride to Newfoundland last summer with his dad. having no doubts about Steven's ridng skill and the bikes prepped with some crash bars and big engine guards, Dec 27 we loaded up the trailer and attached it to the back of my poor little Saturn and headed for the warmer climes. specifically our jumpoff point near Atlanta, Ga. here, we graciously accepted a nights stay at fellow inmate Sandmars house. his family was incredible. took us out for dinner and let us spend the night in their motorhome. oh, and we learned a bunch about Llamas! what a great way to start our trip.

our first riding day started with a quick dash across I-20 to Monroe, La. cool but sunny day. as the name of our tour is Baja HOOTERS, we had to stay true to the ride and motel it next to the Hooters. guess where we ate?

since I am currently unemployed and am not going outside again until winter is over I shall continue. our intent was to ride as much 2-lane as possible and stay off the big unfriendly interstates. just before Shreveport we picked up some awesome backroads thru La. we landed on hiway 84 which took us into Texas. don't underestimate the roads in Louisiana. they are quiet and very scenic with some nice little waysides to take a break.

my camera decided to kill itself the night before so we make a quick Wal-Mart stop in Abilene. shiny new ruby red Nikon. it was on sale so the colour was acceptable. another KOA Kabin this time in Carlsbad,NM.
our intent was to camp as much as possible but the nights were quite chilly so my survival instinct kicked in and sought nighttime heat. it was new years eve and the KOA was having a party. we skipped that but they did serve us dinner. mmmmmmmmmm....ribs!:thumb

rode an excellent route to Alamogordo. rte 82 from artesia. way high up. seem to remember GPS shwing something like 9800feet above sea level. bits of snow and ice in the shady spots on the way down kept me interested. very cool how you ride over this big hill called Alamo Peak and drops you right into the White Sands National Monument area.
this day ended in beautiful Tombstone, AZ.[IMG]

    Lookin good so far!

If I may make a suggestion, downsize the embedded photos a tad. I'm having to scroll over and I'm on a high-res widescreen laptop. :deal

on with the show. snoring ride along the big road to yuma and next day we cross into Baja @ Algodones. the nice man in immigration gets us on our way.

from Algodones we zoom south. I was very surprised how green it was in that area. they have an excellent canal system setup for irrigation.
onto Mex 5 for the ride across the dry lake bed. now that was waaaay cool! like being on the moon.
I had good intentions of riding on it but then looked back at my heavily laden GS and decided not a good idea.

arrival in San Felipe. first Pemex on the hiway has no gas but the one in town does so we top up. I had no idea where we were going to stay but from reading numerous ride reports I knew the general location of Kiki's. a quick trip along the Malecon to see the dude wrestling the fish.

and after a few quick turns, we find Kiki's. right where I thought it was. trust me, that doesn't happen often. I arrange for a palapa. hop back on the bikes to find our spot, but what do i see over there??? 3 characters from Alberta on dirtbikes. sweet! we ride over and first thing we hear from any of them is "want a beer?" I am very quickly falling in like with Baja. this where Ged, Mark and Darren enter the picture. "sure, why not? camp setup can wait!".
