Some pretty nice riding near the Danube bend, just north of Budapest. There's a trail that you can ride right up to the top of the mountain, which gives an epic view of the Danube. So far I've yet to explore a lot of Hungary, but I think it's mostly flat. If you're looking for mountains and curvy roads, ride north an hour or two to Slovakia and tackle those roads!

I'll be headed back to Hungary in May this year, so if you haven't left by then check back on my blog www.bikegirl.me and I might be able to get you some more info!

    Hello Lisa

Have a look at this video of a trip I did in that area, then let us know if its the sort of thing you're seeking and we can see what we can do to help. Where are you starting from? How long do you have?

April/may in "balkan mountains" can be tricky (depend on winter, but snow is usually a problem till mid/end june) .

Yes, SWE is for Sweden. I just moved "home " to Sweden after 20 years so I havn´t really seen so much of this country by bike.

Norway is lovely! Lots of spectacular mountains, roads, fjords. I strongly recommend Norway. It´s just breathtaking beutiful!

I agree. April is usually quite rainy. In Slovenija you will not be able to see Mangart because of the snow, same goes for Durmitor in Montenegro and some other beautifull destinations in former Yugoslavia.
In Slovenija you can see the old town of Ljubljana, visit Postojana cave, river Soča valley, Logarska dolina, look in to Triglavski narodni park, if you get lucky with weather try Vršič pass...
Croatian coast is amazing, must see is Dubrovnik, Plitvička jezera, there are some nice off road routes over the Velebit...
I think it would be much easier to give you some tips if I knew the route you are taking, how many days...Former Yugoslavia is very beatutifull and versitaile.

    hey Lisa :)

We did the Balcan in summer 2013 for about 4 weeks (from Bern, Switzerland).
Dont miss Romania and Bulgaria! Thats where we had the best offroad riding! I dont have GPS tracks because we rode only with maps but here you can see our route (http://www.xtadventures.ch/#!balkans/aozww). I would rather go in June because of the weather and road conditions.
    Wish you a great trip!

    Hi Barnman
I'm going to Romania in June. Starting on Aix en Provence, then going through Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and into Romania up to Cluj.
Your video looks great. Can you suggest me some roads?
    Thanks

    Hi bikergirl,
How are the the more rugged offroad opportunities in Slovakia? Went there briefly a couple of years ago, but that was in the north, along the polish border. It was great, but don't know if we were just lucky. We are a few friends considering going by train to Wiena and then take the long way through Slovakia into Poland. Would it be possible to plan a 90/10 (or 80/20) offroad track all the way through, or is it a lost cause? We are traveling on 690s/701s with full knobbies, so the less tarmac the better. ;-)

    Cheers

Another input for Lisa: Southern Albania might be worth considering. The Kuc road from Borsh on the coast to Kuc is quite interesting. You may check it out on Youtube. Permet is a nice base to explore the surrounding roads as well as the natural hot springs and do some rafting on the Vjosa. For some urban relaxing, you can go to Gjirokastra.

It's a long ride from Vienna, but further south than Slovenia or Romania, so you might have warmer weather.
