...a quick run along the Watauga river...I think?
The cotton is up and looking good....so far.
It was hot by the time I got there.
We received some very sad news yesterday.
We lost ROBBLE in that C-130 crash fighting fires out West on Sunday.
There's a memorial thread for him in inmates. link
I always enjoyed our chats ...
This is very sad news for us who knew him...
And enjoyed his company around the camp-outs...
I agree Kev.. I love this pic of Robbie...
This is really sad news...
It's still hard to believe and the sadness only becomes worse as it's learned that Robbie wasn't the only tie I had to this crash. I knew Robbie Cannon but not his family, I didn't know pilot Joe McCormick but it turns out that his inlaws are old family friends. Joe leaves behind a wife, 3 boys and a 3 week old daughter..... I remember his wife as a young girl and can't imagine her as a widow with 4 children of her own.
These men died as heroes. but my heart is truly broken for the families that have been left behind.
Hope y'all had a good Holiday! I enjoyed a lazy 4th of July grillin' some burgers at home and watching movies in the AC.
Thursday I decided to see if that 'redneck personal cooling system' I made last summer still worked. It does the ice water kept me cool all the way up to the mtns where it was no longer needed. Storms could be seen brewing to the West along the TN border and the breeze and cloud cover felt real gooood! ....about half way from my house to the Blue Ridge I spied a temp reading of 100f.....it was at least 25 degrees cooler than that atop Beech mtn.
We're not in Kansas anymore......
Not much left of OZ though, I'm afraid....
Although it does appear that somebody has salvaged and relocated the 'yellow brick road'
I decided to do some exploring around the backside of Beech Mtn.....no maps or gps..just checking this out.
Well, this looks interesting, does it not?
I only need one of the wheel tracks......let's go!
Looks like a nice place for a picnic, no?
Here's a closer look at my 'air-conditioner' there's a windshield washer pump in there that circulates ice water through tubing that's sewn into and old shirt.
....the road beyond was still begging to be explored.
It was beginning to bring back memories of Caney Fork.
...but then I was getting myself into kind of a tight spot to be on the Strom. I had to go down this as there was no turning around.....getting back up it is getting close to the bikes clearance capabilities though.
The trail was only getting rougher and the approaching thunder was only getting louder.
I threw in the towel and doubled back from here....successfully, I might add!
Not knowing exactly where I was, where the trail might come out, what obstacles might be yet to come, if I'd get caught in a downpour....and even though I'd spied fresh knobbie tracks, I couldn't be sure if I was even supposed to be there to begin with or long it may be before help came by if I were to get stuck out there...... Yeah, I'm kinda stooopid.
Miles away, at the bottom of the mountain, I came across this sign and couldn't help but wonder...
Enjoying the cool air of an approaching storm.....and not at all worried about getting caught in it...anymore.
Gratuitous crappy 'white sky' pics.
Looks like it already rained here....maybe I can stay between 'em?
The thing about not having any particular place to go is that you don't have to head for those dark clouds......unless that's the only place the road goes!
Well, well....friendlier skies in the Wilson Creek gorge.
I'm happy to report that I was able to stay between storms and in cooler air all the way home! .....and you can rest easy knowing that was the last crappy pic I took that day!
Them pics are awfull... You should try harder next time.
Great px Kevin ..
Where is that Land of Oz !! That looks like another place I need to check out with Love Valley...
We also took a little 200 mile ride on the 4th... And also found some new back roads
dlrides did a ride report several years ago with more info and links and they also went inside for some more close up pics....CLICK HERE to check that out.
Thanks ... Beech Mt park...
I have got to go and check that out !!!
It looks very cool....
once you figure the location out, we could head up there and scout a bit more... just saying
I thought that yellow brick road was in one of Don's RRs. Neat places up there.
That storm brewing over you must have been the precursor to the weather system that hit the Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park yesterday/last night and resulted in a few deaths and lots of damage. Seems awful late in the season for that kind of storm damage - I've always associated that with Spring and Fall frontal passages.
Well, it's 10 AM sharp, the temp is only 85 right now, I think I'll suit up and take a ride. Maybe go up above Titusville and see if they ever reopened Shiloh Marsh Road - been closed TFN since the Fall for some extra heavy duty maintenance. Was supposed to have reopened around Feb-Mar.
How long before you take the DR up to re-do that trail?
