I bought a new notebook and downloaded basecamp. Is it true that it won't save the image file off the sd card so I can use the map when ever. Basecamp does see the sd card but takes a while to view it, and deletes it as soon as it is unplugged. More questions to come.

Yes, It is true and Garmin is quite explicit about what you can and can't do with Maps delivered on SD Card. You are also correct, in your observation that BaseCamp will read the Maps from the SD Card if connected via any SD Card Reader (your GPS is one of those). It does not "copy" the maps and then erase them. It reads them and creates an "index" of the Map and saves that index so that the next time you plug in the SD Card with that Map it doesn't have to re-index the Map - taking less time.

you can copy the .img onto your computer and then use it as you like. mapset toolkit will allow you to extract the .img into a full mapset and register it for you for usage in BC or MS.

You could try using Garmin Map Updater.

    http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

The Map Updater will require you to connect your GPS so it can verify what maps you have or are supposed to have, then let you reinstall the maps. You can click on Options and choose to install just to the GPS, just to your PC, or both.

It might work to download the maps to your computer (from Garmin) based on what you have on your GPS. It did for me, but my maps got onto my GPS via download, not a pre-made SD card.
