hope to see you soon,
I got some PMs about our recent Clear Creek experience, so maybe I was too glib based on all the changes that are in the wind for CC ...
Went back and looked at your thread about your March Clear Creek ride:
So we rode the same area except that we rode all the way through Clear Creek from east to west on what I call Clear Creek Road (R1) ... we didn't see any locked gates, or new signs ... We didn't see any new "iron rangers" at Jade Mill or Oak Flat or at the Caolinga Road entrance ... The one new gate I saw (unlocked) is in the middle of the road, not two new gates at either end, like I imagined ...
What is a bit annoying for adventure riders like me is that the BLM has no idea who really uses Clear Creek Road ... I found it on a AAA map twenty years ago and have been using it once or twice a year as a "through traveler" on my way elsewhere ... exactly like we used it Sunday ... so the planning ahead nature of the new access permits will be a PITA ...
They spent big bucks on EPA stuff and a decontamination station, but no money to find out who actually uses the road ... ranger Rick had to be questioned by the Board of Supervisors about how a locked gate and fees would impact owners and their guests who use the road to access private land and claims up there ...
We'd have been a bit screwed, gasoline-wise, if we'd run into a locked gate at, say, Coalinga Road and been turned around at that point ...
So ... we saw no difference up there to what we've seen for twenty years ... YMMV
Tumey Hills rocks ... closed in the summer fire season like Panoche ... in and out stuff like Panoche ... no dirt bikes or OHVs ... (EDIT: I’ve heard that it is NOT LEGAL to ride a street bike on the established roads in Panoche and Tumey Hills … that one may be ticketed by the BLM for trespassing …
Anyway ... we are not scoff-laws ...
see you around the campfire,
I had been under the impression that Tumey was closed to two wheeled vehicles plated or not. I had read numerous warnings (1,2,3,4,5) to that effect a while ago, and looking around, it seemed to be the case. Is it not true? Can street legal bikes ride in Tumey?
(Are you sure you're not a scoff-law? Something about a couple of those links...)
Haha ... Nothing like being beaten over the head with your own words ...
Thanks for reminding me about that stuff ... no one likes a scofflaw ...
PS: they never did change the signs to make it clear that only 4x4s are allowed ...
But I'll stop riding there and consider myself lucky that I never got a ticket ...
I consider this civil disobedience.
I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government.
Ah yes, I am an idiot (hanging head in shame) ...
Good thing no one reads this thread ...
see you around the campfire,
Holy shit gentlemen, I just got back from Clear Creek and found it to be far from open. I went the completely lawful route this time (I was also hunting with several firearms in the truck, so I wanted to be as legal as possible) and actually got a permit to enter the asbestos zone. I would've even paid the 5 bucks if the iron ranger had been set up on the side we entered from. (New Idira) I called the Hollister office and asked if it might be possible to obtain a permit over the counter. The lady obliged me, although don't expect this level of service, especially on a weekend. Anyway long story short I had a great time cruising around, but was shocked at the amount of closed roads out there. Basically everything that was open before is still open and everything that wasn't is closed, plus they're now expecting you to get that permit. I had expected the single track to be closed, but they've also closed most of the roads. I didn't see any rangers, but there was some activity at the decon site. I also found a new BLM issued Clear Creek map that only showed the roads that are currently open. Anyway, just passing on my findings today. Hope y'all are having fun, and from the pics it looks like you are .
Call the Bakersfield BLM office and ask them about the "no motorcycles" sign. I did years ago and recall them saying they meant dirt bikes (unplated).
I don't think they can single out a type of highway vehicle. If they actually do I'm going to borrow a friend's Jeep and...
Heck, the Hollister BLM leases these hills out to sheepherders to run their
flocks through in the spring time. How are 10,000+ sheep less of an
environmental impact than a handful of street legal motorcycles using
the existing access roads?
It's all about the money, and I'll bet those sheep herding contract
payments end up in Rick Coopers bank account.
Thanks for checking in Todd. We missed you in Baja (got back yesterday)
I saw Bert had a get off. Hope all else was kick ass fun.
Not sure if Im posting in the right place...
Any rides coming up for 4/19 Saturday? Looking to do an overnighter either south into Las Padres Forest or North of SF into Mendocino Forest. Anyone interested in planning something? Let me know!
A bunch of people going to Hollister Hills for the weekend.
Not quite the same as national forest but its something
Are you guys camping overnight? Accepting tag-alongs?
Hey BAARCers, and woodsxr & Calioutdoors247,
We're having a crew at Hollister Hills this weekend for AJ's 14th birthday
(no presents, says Dad ...) We've been doing this for a few years,
and it is always a fun event ...
<a title="The crew! by tegangel, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/65159286@N00/6936484770/"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7086/6936484770_5ac6f6eba2_c.jpg" alt="The crew!" width="500" height="333" /></a>
BAARCers always welcome!
I'm planning on being at the Madrone campground Friday afternoon ...
It is the last campground past the store ... last fire rings on the left
before the turn-around, if we can get 'em ...
We should have folks there through Sunday ...
show-up-or-don't, plenty-of-room-for-everybody style ...
we'll have people appearing when they can all weekend ...
I guess they charge $10 for camping ...
You'd be welcome, Calioutdoors247 ...
I think woodsxr and Mikengrace have been threatening to show up ...
Plus, I'm pretty sure it's legal for us to ride there!
see you around the campfire,
