Become a Professional Motorcycle Instructor! The Missouri Motorcyclist Safety Program (MMSP) is looking for qualified individuals for a part-time career in Motorcycle Training! Many training sites in Missouri (26 locations in total) need additional instructors to work for them.

The Program Coordinator is seeking individuals that want to work as professional motorcycle Instructors. Most employment opportunities provide part time work. Certified instructors can work at multiple sites that offer the state approved basic riding program. The rate of pay for teaching varies by site location and the experience of the instructor. The rate will be determined after completion of all of the training required by the site or sites you are employed by.

To become certified to teach as part of the Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program, candidates will need to make a commitment in both time and resources. The process includes but is not limited to:

    1. Candidates must have experience as a licensed motorcycle operator.
    2. Candidates need to locate a site sponsor, you can find the sites listed here: http://www.mmsp.org/mapping/
    3. Candidates need to complete the state approved basic course offered by one of the training sites in your area (candidates can go to the sponsor’s school) as students and become familiar with the program.
    4. Candidates have to observe one live classes and complete a written assignment of their observations which can also be completed at the sponsor’s site.
    5. Candidates will need to take an additional training course. This is to help develop their riding skills, and make sure that the candidates have a solid understanding of motorcycle related knowledge. Additional State approved classes can be found here: http://www.mmsp.org/index.php Other course can be evaluated on a case by case basis.
    6. Candidates must submit and pass a background check with the state of Missouri, application can be found here: http://www.mshp.dps.mo.gov/MSHPWeb/PatrolDivisions/CRID/crimRecChk.html
    7. Candidates must submit a driving record abstract that can be obtained here: http://dor.mo.gov/drivers/records.php#record
    8. It is recommended that candidates complete a hands on CPR and First Aid Training class.
    9. Candidates need to complete the Instructor Training Course (seven days of training), which includes work on both classroom and riding portions of the program.

There is no guarantee of success, the training requires both physical and mental capabilities and demands a great deal of effort!

The required time investment is a total of 13 days for all the training classes and assignments. These do not all happen at once, and can happen over many weeks or even months.

If you are an avid motorcycle rider, want to be more involved in the industry, want to change the perceptions people have about motorcyclists and would enjoy helping others reach their goal of learning to ride a motorcycle, this is a great way to be involved in the motorcycle community. Becoming a professional motorcycle instructor takes a lot of time and effort but it is very rewarding in multiple ways. You will improve your riding skills and overall motorcycle knowledge, and you will become a true professional. The Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program takes great pride and demands specific quality from all of our team members. We do this by sharing our knowledge and expertise with you. You become part of a diverse team with the goal of reducing motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities. The MMSP staff members and trainers have many years of motorcycle experience (our trainers have backgrounds that include motorcycle experience in street, dirt, and track riding/training).

Our goal is to help you succeed and we work very closely with all candidates to do our best to provide them with all they need to complete the training program successfully. To become and stay proficient it is expected you will teach four or more classes each year. The opportunities are there, the choice is yours.

Opportunities are there to help others learn some of the skills others shared with us or that we had to learn the hard way. How can you help others and at the same time help yourself.

I did that in NY for a few years after I retired. If not for my wife's ongoing (5 yrs+) battle with cancer, I would probably still be doing it.

If you are considering it, you should do it.

I started teaching in New York as well, 1994 for Snowmobile Safety, then I added ATV followed by Motorcycle and finally dirt bike. Today I teach many different things and love to spend my time either riding or teaching.

What about having felony convictions from a state outside Missouri? Say, like Colorado?

Case by case basis, I would suggest you complete the background check first and go from there.

I found out that the law is the same for Rider Instructors as School Bus Drivers... No Felons... Both owner's and drivers.. so how is it case by case?

laws or regulations.. BOTH are rules of the state. As you are the one looking for Riding Instructors.. you should know the rules... I know them now.. maybe you need to refresh yourself in Missouri Law..

I received word from Cape Girardeau Career & Tech Center that they are also currently looking for instructors for the 2018 season and beyond. If you or someone you know might be interested in this opportunity please reach out and let me know and I will put you with the site manager for that site.

Interested. So this would be doing training courses for new riders? Is this a steady schedule thing or just here and there when there is enough people signed up for a class? I currently do a motorcycle training and accident investigation class with the MSHP new recruits whenever they call me every 2 years or so for free other than the pleasure of getting to ride their closed track. I've wondered what it would be like to have a career in the motorcycle industry but I don't believe it would come close to matching the money and benefits I currently have. I'll look into it though.

For most locations this would be part time only although there are opportunities to do more, manage fleet bikes, site manager, Instructor trainer and the list goes on. I started as a hobby in the 1990's and now it is a full time thing for me, although I did not have that intent at the start.

There are a couple of sites in your area and I can hook you up with them to see what opportunities are available, how much you would get to teach etc. Currently I would say there are some opportunities to get out there and have some fun, and make a few bucks in the process while helping others see if riding is for them.

Hello, I'm relatively new to St. Louis but have been interested in becoming a motorcycle instructor for many years. I never had the time until recently to do something like this but I think I could swing it now. I'd love information about opportunities to do this.

We are also looking to expand and add some training sites, so if you are interested in teaching but do not live near an existing site no fear! Locations where there are new opportunities might include the bootheel region, Poplar Bluff or maybe Malden, St. Joseph area and maybe south central Missouri region.
