We officially started preparation yesterday so I think it is time to start the RR. Meags and I are planning to follow a modified version of the Smokey Mountain 500. This route has been laid out and tested by several individuals, so the route planning was mostly done.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

I have been riding about a year and a half off road and Meags is just getting into it. Her Christmas present this year was a KLX 250S in prep for this trip. I will be taking the GSA since it will be easy to pack down and we will be comfortable for the two up portions. I will do a detailed post about gear later.

Yesterday I spooned on a K60 front that replaced a TKC80. I also replaced the right shroud on her bike(thanks ScoutDAD) that was damaged in a get off a few months ago. She is a trooper; she has taken some spills but is still getting back on the bike. Like me she is a bit of a perfectionist and thinks falling is a bad deal, I keep encouraging her that even the best riders fall, and as long as you are not breaking bones it is OK.

We made a generic list and simulated a packup. Fortunately all our gear will fit and are not overloading the bikes. I will be taking the majority of the equipment on the big girl, and she will be taking the smaller duffel and her sleeping bag.

I know it is a little generic so far, but I will detail the bike and gear in subsequent post. The purpose of this RR is a gift to Meags to remember her fist MC trip, and to share our experience with the ADV world. She is a photographer so the pics should be very well done. Six days until we take off :clap Thanks for reading.

I will be riding my 2009 BMW 1200GS Adventure. I have owned the bike for a little over a year, and about 13,000 miles. The stock tires were Conti Trail Attacks. My next set of tires were TCK80's and now I am on K60 scouts. I like the compromise of the K60's so far but will know more about the front tire after this ride. I have a seat concepts front seat, and Rox risers but other than a few protection bits, the bike is stock. BMW did a pretty good job with this bike and I really did not have to change much to make is perfect for me.

Meags will be riding a 2006 Kawasaki 250s. This was a Christmas present and her fist dual sport She has put about 800 miles on it, and her skills are coming along well The bike was low mileage, around 2k I think, but we still went through the major wear items. SHE spooned on a Dunlop 606 up front and a Kenda Trackmaster on the rear. The bike is completely stock. It should probably have risers for her height but we may not have this one long, so we do not want to put too much money into it.

Navigation will be by my Garmin Montana 650T, and our cells when riding in town. I think the Montana is a great product for following tracks, and have really enjoyed the functionality of it over the past year.

Stay tuned, the gear post is next!

I am out of town this week so Meags and I did some planning over the phone. The weather is going to be crap on Tuesday so this is what we have come up with so far. The is only a guideline and will be adjusted as necessary.

Saturday Morning - leave Jacksonville in route to Two Wheels of Suches camp there

Sunday - ride the Suches to Robbinsville loop. Camp at simple life campground.

Monday - two up ride day around Robbinsville, Dragon, Skyway, whatever else is interesting camp simple life

Tuesday - Book over to Asheville and avoid the rain

Wednesday - long way back to Robbinsville, BRP, Clingmans dome ect. Camp simple life

Thursday - Ride to Tellico plans and camp Cherohala Mountain Trail Campground

    Friday - Back to Suches

Plan Friday afternoon will change as the trip progresses depending on our energy level and the weather

    Getting excited T-4 :clap

Finally the gear. This will be it for a while save some cell pics. The RR will be out the week of 5/5.

    My gear:

I recently picked up a Klim latitude top and bottom in the flea market. I am excited for Gore-Tex, no more liners for this guy!

I will be using my Built D/s helmet, you know the cheap one with the visor. I have had it for a year, and this particular one was replaced last month(for free) due to the visor being stuck. It is not great but gets the job done and cheap! If it was slightly quieter, I would call it a great helmet.

My gloves of choice are Klim Adventure, I may bring a set of Dakars for the warm afternoons.

The boots are Sidi Adventure Rains. These are fantastic boots that keep my feet dry unless the water is over the cuff. I have put 5-8k on these boots. It will be nice when off the bikes for short breaks, all day comfort!

    Her gear

She is going to be using my last set of gear. It is slightly big but better since my stuff has liners and hers does not.

Jacket is a Olympia Moto X. I really love this jacket and had mixed feelings about replacing it. The ventilation is fantastic, but I really wanted to go the Gore-Tex route.

Pants are Olympia Rangers. Also nice, but very limited ventilation and not water proof. I also had a hard time getting them over my boots unless I unzipped to the knees.

Hemet is a HJC modular, also a pass down.

Boots were a gift from a friend, not sure the brand but they are medium quality Mx boots.

Bobby, the track through the Cohutta Wilderness has been adjusted. The v2 of the map routed on some roads that were closed.

The problem is between waypoints 216 and 219. here is what the correction looks like. New map is coming soonest.
