    I ride mine to cords showing. Usually that is just some ballistic layer. I usually order replacements when the flat center gets pretty wide.
    I carry spare tubes, co2 and a high pressure pump. And tube patches.
    Belt and suspenders.

    Same as Mr. Head; ride 'em until the cords show, then have a replacement usually standing by in the shop for when I get home... usually. That, or another set of wheels with tires that I can ride until the replacement arrives.

    This was my last tire before the change; discovered at the end of the ride, but I had been monitoring it for a month or two when it started flattening out in the tread center.

    Geek: newer tires have wear indicators molded in. Contis are a little round hole. Once those are worn to the bottom, time to change the tire.

    ...or like some here: ride em till they show cords.

    When the cords start showing, I pay attention. Depending on the tire and compound, it could be anywhere from 100-400 additional miles before they show in 4-5 different spots. At that point, I figure it is time to replace. Like Ridge, I always have a new tire (or backup used one on an old wheel) ready to install. A spare tube and micro inflator with Co2 reside in my saddle pack. Always have a cell phone on hand just in case. When those don't work, I have used my thumb to hitch a ride home 3 times in the past couple of years.:deal I had a record number of flats with Michelin Pro 4 Endurance tires a couple of years ago. Endurance my ass.:becca

    Now that I've made the switch to tubeless I can't go back to tubes. Being on a tubed tire for the last 4 weeks/992 miles has convinced me of that.

    Is there a ballpark number of miles road tires last or is it all over the place depending on the specific tire like knobblies?
    I assume it is thousands of miles and not hundreds considering how easy it is to rack up the miles on the road bike...

    @Geek That tire in the photo above was replaced after 3,300 miles, and that seems pretty average for life of my road tires if I rotate them front:rear and visa-versa about once per year.

    My experience has been anywhere from 1500-3400 miles... and I've burned through several over the past 5 years. I will admit to getting lazy about rotating front to rear sometimes. Once that rear starts to flat spot (600-800 miles), I just leave it on there for the duration. Strava simplifies this with their maintenance log for each bike. Worth doing in my experience. You know exactly how many miles each component lasts and it only takes a few seconds per part.

    I got 3x the distance from my Continental Gatorskins than I did from the Conti UltraSports that replaced them. The Ultras are still on the bike with about 2200km on them. I'm on my MTB full time this month , so I'll probably get the season out of them. Pinch flatted the front this weekend, but the rear looks in worse shape. Down past the wear indicators (see @Mr Head post)

    The casing underneath is harder than the tread and I get a feel for it with a fingernail test. Tyre cuts are pretty hard to avoid and are a good visual reference - tyres wear faster at the cuts so if you've got them, best keep an eye on them. Dropping the air out of the tyre and squeezing the tyre together so that it folds just off and then again on the centre line might also gives a hint. Wear a set out and it'll give a clue to the maximum width of the flat on the crown.

    Unfortunately the Schwalbe tyres I use don't have centre line wear indicators and it seems to be suggested by the manufacturer as a measure for replacement, but they go on to say that sidewalls normally fail before the tread is completely worn out! That's a bit grim and I wonder who wrote that. It is a stupidly easy to put 2-4 pins in the tread mould for wear indicators.
    A useful measure with the Pro One is where the worn flat is in relation to the edge pattern or tread.

    I usually get about 3000km per set, but I don't run them to rags nor do I rotate them. The front is usually looking a bit sorry so I do both at the same time. Into week seven on my commuter and about 2700km, the tyres will come off next week. Winter riding has been hard on the chain and for less than $20 I'll be replacing that at the same time.

    BTW, I'm getting parts at cost plus tax through the club so two Schwalbe Pro One tyres and an Ultegra chain for about USD70 and less than 3c/km while 'earning' $325pw through the ride to work / workout scheme... I'm not complaining.

    In addition to the previous posters, it's also dependent on your weight, usual pressures, riding style, and road surface.

    Went out yesterday for a road ride. Just over 41 miles. Nice day, hardly anyone out and on the way home had some nasty headwind. Made for a little struggle towards the end. Got off the bike and noticed my rear wheel showing a patch of wear and tear I guess. Headed to the shop today to get a new tire so I'll do some mountain biking today.

    Up early after not a great night of tossing and turning. The car needed to be dropped off for service so I headed up there about 7:30. They open at 8. I got the car dropped off, then got on the bike and pedaled off into the morning mist. I figured to ride to Ortega and see how I felt and traffic looked. Nice long flat warm up ended up have me riding back. The traffic on Ortega was awful. I came back and rode up my usual loop for one lap, then back here.
    On the way back I get a call from the shop. A/C compressor is dead. $1,400 or so for that on top of the other services that need doing.
    Ouch!
    That will teach me for eyeballing tubeless wheel set ups. :lol3
    33 miles, 2:22, 2,300 feet of climbing.
    Now, I need to go find some lunch. I am hungry enough to have a headache and feel a little sick.
    Maybe I'll walk downtown?
    The shop hopes to have the car done today so I can ride back to Dana Point and pick it up later this afternoon, though tomorrow is fine by me too.

    I did a gravel ride this morning and ran into a buddy on my way back home on a rail trail. He is originally from Italy and a die hard cyclist. He turns 70 this week and rides every day. We chatted about the Vuelta. He's a Nibali fan while I am a Contador fan. He is a Coppi fanatic, which makes a ton of sense and we both detest Froome. He lives in a retirement community with his wife and says he can't stand his neighbors because they are all fat and have to use walkers and carry oxygen with them. I don't klike riding with most people, but if I run into that guy, I slow down and enjoy the ride more. I am hoping I can ride half as well as him when I reach his age.

    One of my neighbors is 80 still golfs and walks a couple of miles a day.It isn't the same as riding ...but I hope when I'm 80 I'll still be really active.

    You are not kidding there. And it doubles down when the productive half of this enterprise is away.
    Then on top of that there is all the renovation work here slowing down my progress to a degree.
    And then relatives begin visiting in October and again in November.
    I walked to the pier and got coffee and a hand pie. That is a pie the size of your hand. Then I walked back the way I'd come, along the beach. So, by the time I climbed back up here I was again a soaking sweaty mess.
    A cool shower later will fix that. Then this evening the handyman will come by with the bedroom door and that little project will be done.
    The painters are scaring the hell out of me climbing up ladders to the roof, then leaning off them to paint. I'd have scaffolding.
    This was last night. Not "my" gate so IDC.

    The French doors are in pretty rough shape. You know how a wooden door gets when water gets at it? Well these have had that going on since the mid 70's. They are pretty limp for doors.
    I figure this building has maybe ten years left before it needs torn down and started over.
    When the wind blows pretty good the power flickers thanks to the neighbors trees being into the services. Just what you want cramped between fifty year old wooden buildings.
    Lois says it reminds her of India.
