Some friends of ours bought a place on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake a while back and have been asking wifey and I to come up for a weekend. Wow, couldn't have picked a better weekend for Big Bear than last weekend.

Started Saturday off with a quick surf with my dad and my son, had a quick bite and loaded wifey on to the back of the big red GS. Anytime I have wifey with me I make her suit up in riding jacket/pants, boots and gloves. She was not happy as we rolled thru Riverside, Colton and Banning ... 104. When we got to Running Springs it was down to 82 and already felt a million times cooler.

We got to our friends place at about 3 and changed out of our riding gear and headed for the pontoon boat and a few pitchers of Sangria. It was amazing on the lake as the sun set, warm and no wind. Back at their place the bbq lit up and we had a feast that included some of the neighbors and lots of tequila ... lots and lots of tequila.

Somehow I was up and moving at 6:30 and feeling good (guess it was excellent tequila). Got dressed and rolled out quietly to have breakfast at the North Shore Cafe. I had mentioned to a couple of folks that I would be heading out for a ride on Sunday and wouldn't you know it, one bike after another starting pulling up. Some coffee and breakfast and 8 of us ended up rolling out to the dirt; 3 - GS's, 1 - Super Tenere, 2 - 690's and 2 - 510's.

I didn't really have a plan but did have a couple of loops on my GPS, long one and short one. We started out on the long one which had us heading in a round about way to Holcomb Valley. Stopped and had a look at John Bull Run and decided didn't want to work that hard. We did enjoy a couple of jeeps go up.

By going around John Bull, we jumped a truck trail to connect back over to Holcomb Valley Rd. No wind and good pace of the group meant there was some dust. That pace and dust resulted in a bit of a mishap by the Super Tenere. As it was relayed to me, 4th gear, big tree root, hole in front of the root. Resulting in a big ouch!

The guy on the ST was ok and was able to limp back to the highway with a GS escort. That guy was riding the hell out of his big Yamaha, with street tires, right until the tree root. Bummer.

The remaining group rode out the loop and ended up back in Fawnskin where we thought we would find the wounded ST and the GS rider. No sign of them so we headed back out and found them still working their way back on Holcomb Valley Rd. The Super Tenere had a full escort back

The 2 husky riders and one of the KTM guys decided to head back to Phelan the long way. The other GS riders and the remaining KTM rider wanted to ride a little more so I pulled up the short loop ride and we headed out towards Big Pine Flats. Some really nice trails that offered a little bit of everything for the big bikes.

One of the more picturesque turns in the road

Even had a crack at some beginner level hypnotism. "You are in a deep sleep ... when I snap my fingers, you will believe you are a 525 exc."

Surprisingly, nothing broken, just a couple scratches on the crash bars.

Got back to the fire station in Fawnskin around 2:00 and said my good byes to the group. Picked up wifey and headed back home to the beach. OMFG! It was 107 at the bottom of Hwy 330, we almost melted into the bike.

Another great weekend in So Cal

Great looking ride, aside from the small mishap. I would have loved to join had I not been in Chicago.
