Big or Small, new or older?

    Looking to pickup my first trials bike here in the next few days. I current ride the woods on a ktm 300xcw, and I race downhill mtb's in the summer full time so I plan on using this bike as mostly a training tool, and to have some fun trail riding in the woods with from time to time. I am not planning on doing any competitions or anything like that on the bike because the DH racing takes up most of my free time and weekends.

    So a little about myself, 5'10" 185lbs, athletic build. Been riding woods bikes for the past 18 years, along with a fair amount of road riding, and I race in the expert class on my mtb.

    As for the bikes, it seems I am limited to a newer small bike, or an older bigger displacement bike. The bikes currently in my running are a 2013 sherco 1.25, 2005 sherco 290, and there is a very slight possibility that I might be able to afford a 2012 gasgas 280 eco.

    I actually got a chance to ride a 12' sherco 125, and a 12 gasgas 280 yesterday, but it was very limited test ride, and the 125 had some MAJOR custom gearing on it with a 59t rear sprocket!

    So I plan on using this bike just go hone my skills a bit, and my wife also just got into riding, and she has an xr100 she is learning on, so I was planning to follow here around on the trials bike instead of the 300 just because i think it might be more fun for me.

    Any thoughts, suggestions, or useful words of wisdom? I would say my max budget is around 4k, but i would obviously be happy to spend less. Any advantages/disadvantages to a smaller vs larger, and going new vs old on the larger/smaller bikes...any major geometry changes, or ride changes? Thanks!

    Trail riding on the 125 would really suck!

    I don't know what you're willing to spend 4k of but in the USA you can buy a very good used Trials bike for $4000.

    Where do you live? The 125 would be a great first trials bike but a bit anemic at altitude.

    I live in southwestern PA. It seems these trials bikes are hard to find used and in decent shape. The 13' 125 is local, and that is appealing, but I have found a few others that I could have shipped, but I am kinda nervous buying sight unseen. The 05 2.9 seems to be in good shape. I am at $4200 for the '13 1.25 sherco, and the other guy is right at $2900 for the 05 sherco 2.9, it looks like it would be around $300 to get it to me.

    Did you ever look on pennswoods classifieds? There is a 2007 Sherco 2.9 for $3400 and a 2004 GasGas 300 for $1900 on there right now.

    I saw a couple of the new 2013 Ecos at a Peru, KS event. The engines were same part as in the TXT. Only differences I saw were the 2009-version round-tube frame an less gnarly looking subframe (which I like), few stickers, and the Olle instead of Tech-Reiger suspension. Haven't yet seen a `12 model so can't say.

    I've got a '10 Econo that remains one of my favorite bikes ever. Very smooth. I've ridden another 2010 Econo that vibrated terribly, so you should ride one before buying it to make sure it's a sweet one.

    Personally, I'd not buy a 125 in your weight and size. They require more work to ride, but they can teach you how to use the throttle, as in a lot of throttle. Now a 125 with a larger cylinder on it would be something I'd definitely consider. You could converting it later, after the 125 schools you in much throttle revving, and clutch. It's 'just money' to buy the 225cc S3 big-bore kit. Then you'd have a pretty potent little machine.

    As for trail riding, if you skip learning the 'trials mentality' by allowing yourself to engage in competition and hang around trials riders, your trail riding experience may be a disappointment, as you literally won't know how to make the most out of the bike. You'll think things are terribly weird and ineffective. This is hard to explain, but believe me, trials will change your brain and preferences if you dive in and stay in a while. You'll end up a much better general off road rider. But if you skim in and bring the fast bike mentality with you, you may have a negative reaction. Again... hard to explain.

    Thanks for that link to the penn woods classifieds, that sherco is gone already, and I just left a message for the guy with the gasgas. We will see what happens.

    Also, is there an S3 big bore kit for that 2013 sherco 125? If so, where could I look into that?

    Just a bit of information... I am also 5'10" 185lbs... the first trials bike in the family was an 08 Gas Gas 125, it was a great first ride and is doing quite well for my wife, however did require more throttle. Considering your experience I would say something in the 250+ rage might be a better long term choice over the 125 as it didn't take long before I was wanting more grunt. (lucky for me the 125 was intended for my wife so I was able to pick up a Montesa 4RT not to long after that :evil)

    FYI: A big bore kit to bring a 125 up to a 200/225 would work as well.

    Just my 2 cents of exp for what its worth.

    I hear ya, after that ride around the yard, the sherco 125 left me desiring a little more, a 200, or 225 would be be perfect, but I hear they no longer offer the 200/225 kits for the newer sherco 125's. If thats the case, I might need to X the 125 from my shopping list

    The 280 gasgas i rode was pretty sweet, I see how it could get away from me easily being new, but it was overwhelming or scary, and just like anything else, it would take practice, but it didnt intimidate me by any means.

    I called the guy that has the GasGas 300 on that pennwoods classifieds, he does still have the bike, and its just over 2 hours from me. I might try to go check it out.

    There is also the 05 2.9, it seems like that would run me around 3100 shipped to my door, but the guy said it has been sitting for a while, but it looks really clean.

    I am in central Pa and have a friend with a 07 Sherco 2.9 that is being freshened up to put on the market.
    Think 3k is the asking figure.
    It seems you are more interested in play riding vs trials events, you don't want a 125 for your general use.
    What do you call SW Pa (town).
    I have a few trials friends in that general area.

    FYI the 2014 Sherco 125 has a new motor with a different stroke, so that may be why the kit isn't available (yet). It is also better off the bottom end, perhaps lessening the need for more cc.

    As for a 280 or 290 being quick or a 300, there are ways to mellow them posted recently and in the past in this forum. As for what bike to buy, I'd go with the least damaged one I could find, and that's more a function of the rider, rather than time ridden or reportedly stored. An experienced rider can ride more while crashing less, and can maintain and modify a bike better, for example.

    I just want to say thanks for all the advice guys! I got a world of information from this post, and I want to thank you for all of your replies. It also looks like I will be getting by first trials bike Saturday with the help of a few forum members here also, so thanks again, stoked to give it a try and put some time in to learn the fundamentals!

    Haha, I hope that happens Motobene!

    ADVCoop, we will have to hook up for sure, I ride out a mines and meadows quite a bit on my enduro bike, and we hit up rock run and scrubgrass quite a bit, now I just need some good spots to work with this trials bike.
