Here are some holiday snaps from a trip to the Black Sea earlier this month, going through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. It was a road ride including some rather bad roads.

    Thanks for looking at my pictures. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
It was a solo ride of just under 7000 km in 15 days. No significant problems or issues to report. Roads and drivers in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on">Albania</st1:country-region> are generally bad, and secondary roads in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Romania</st1:place></st1:country-region> can also be bad. I was most outside my comfort zone in Transnistria and <st1:country-region w:st="on">Albania</st1:country-region>, and <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Odessa</st1:place></st1:City> seems like it could be rough. I did not go through Kosovo. The hardest part was riding home on the Italian autostrada filled with Italian holiday makers. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
In Transnistria, I had to pay for a fictitious transit permit, bribe a cop for a speeding near <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Tiraspol</st1:place></st1:City>, and then bribe a very difficult border guard to exit. I was also scammed by a border guard entering <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Albania</st1:place></st1:country-region>. The Ukrainian border guard was obnoxious, saying something to me in Russian about Osama Bin Laden. (<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> passport.) The Serbians police and border guards were extremely friendly. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
    <st1:country-region w:st="on">Montenegro</st1:country-region> is beautiful, and I would also especially recommend <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Romania</st1:place></st1:country-region>. Sofia Bulgaria and Chisinau <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moldova</st1:place></st1:country-region> were the best cities. I toured <st1:country-region w:st="on">Italy</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Croatia</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Slovenia</st1:place></st1:country-region> previously, so they were transit only. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
People were generally very helpful and friendly and there are many English speakers in developed <st1:country-region w:st="on">Romania</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Bulgaria</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Montenegro</st1:place></st1:country-region>. Prices were very reasonable: local beer about EUR 1, nice dinner EUR 8 to 10, hotels EUR 18 (<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Montenegro</st1:place></st1:country-region> coast) to EUR 75 (Sofia) per night.<o:p></o:p>
