If you keep going north of Roanoke, stop at Peaks of Otter resort. They have a fantastic buffet for breakfast or dinner plus lodging if needed. There is a decent campground nearby if that is your gig.

If you make it all the way to the north end of Skyline Drive and want to camp or stay in cabin, reserve NOW here at Shenadoah River State park, nice place http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/shenandoah-river.shtml

Also agree with other poster that you can paste together a nice ride back south in VA on Rt 42 but it does take you through every small town, other even better options as far as roads and views is to cut west on either VA Rt 55 (old not new Corridor H/55) or Rt 33 into WV and take 220 or 219 south and work your way to other roads heading south. And yes watch out for the 4 legged varmin, bears included.

And if you come into this area at the wrong time, you will get stuck in a shit ton of traffic. You don't want to waste your time

It should open soon. Nights are still cold and ice at the higher elevations hasn't melted. We will have several warm days and a section or two will open. Then another wintry blast and shut down everything but the Asheville commuter route and up around Boone...

You can expect cold nights still in April but roads should be open. No word yet if Heintooga Ridge Road will open this year. It was closed due to budget last year. Not sure if the politicians will rock that boat this year or not.

Some of the best stuff is south of the 'Ville! Lots of tunnels, great views and very twisty.

Here in the VA/NC border region of the BRP the road closes frequently for weather - limbs & trees down or fog (clouds) covering stretches. This is not a problem if you're here to ride. There are side roads that parallel the BRP and are state (well) maintained, never close. Just get off the Parkway and get back on it 15 - 20 miles later; time for a pit stop anyway. Some good fast riding and super scenery just off the BRP.

It's a slow ride and monotonous in sections but worth the time. Relax and enjoy the scenery - it's all about the journey.

March definitely iffy around here, April better but still "moist". Late Sept and early Oct crowded with leaf peepers.

We've decided to do this ride north to south. We'll head straight from Vinemont, Al up to Front Royal the first day, a long hard boring day, but we've decided to get this ride over with. The rest of the trip will be a mire relaxed pace, planning on 6 days total.

I'm still looking and researching stops along the way. Keep the info coming.:freaky

That will be better, I did South to North, and I thought the better riding was on the southern end of the BRP, by the time we got to the north end it was a little boring (Although I only went to the VA border). You definitely need to check out Frog Holler Cabins if it fits in with your schedule, really great place to stay. And they offer guided winery tours. :freaky
