Fellow ADV riders I need some advice. Planning a trip to BRP end of May with wife. Should we stay in Ashville or surrounding city/town. Also need recommendations on accomadations, something nice not 5 star but maybe 3 or 4 star. Any ideas would be helpful. :D

We stayed at the Red House Inn in Brevard, NC. Nice B&B with a good breakfast, and the rooms were not overly decorated with silly knick-knacks.

We found a good restaurant in Brevard, too, The Square Root:

On the BRP, we had stayed at the Bluffs Lodge and liked it very much, but apparently it is closed now.

Just off the parkway, in Sparta NC, is the Appilacian Inn. Been used by many motorcycle groups for rally meets. The MSTA holds a regional event there every Memorial Day weekend. Very MC friendly people both at the motel, and throughout the town at stores and restaurants. Good restaurants within walking distance.

Several places In Boone, NC as well.

Tuggles Gap Resturant and Motel is just off the parkway @ Floyd Va. I have eaten at the Resturant and enjoyed it. Have never used the motel, but have heard both good and bad things about it. It is a very OLD place that was one of the original stops along the parkway, so the rooms are small with little in the way of amenities, but is a way to experience some of the parkway history. Good resturant IMO, and they have beer avaliable on tap or in bottles for carryout as well.

Are you focused on Asheville or open to other areas along the BRP corridor? Motorcycle or car trip? How many nights?
I live along the BRP near where I 77 and the BRP cross along the VA / NC border and know a few places in the area. Much more low key but excellent riding and relaxing.

Asheville is a great place, highly recommend. Active craft beer and restaurant scene. Lots of additional options if you want to wander the area and spend a night or two in other towns. Local tourism web site probably has maps of scenic rides for the region.

We always stay at Peaks of Otter on the way south...it's north of Roanoke right on the Parkway. It has a pretty good restaurant but no wifi...phone service is also not so good. Very nice place to get away from it all!

Also, just south of Asheville is Pisgah Inn, also right on the Parkway.

If you want to be in the middle of some good riding in the Dragon/Deal's Gap Area, might as well stay at Deal'sGap Motorcycle Resort, at the intersection of Hwy 28/129. Those rooms are nice, park mc outside the door, and watch the weekend crowds/weekday riders, or camp out. I don't think you'd be disappointed in the rooms. Two people about 65$ per night. Robbinsville, NC, has some good motels, too. There's one there for motorcyclist. Or, at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Resort on Hwy 28, West of Hwy 74. It's on the way to Deal's Gap and before you get to Fontana Dam/Village. Nice accomodations for camping or 'moteling'.

I will be there for 4 days. My objective is to stay someplace that the wifey will be happy with, she was a travel director out of college and is spoiled with very nice accomadations , since she will not be riding with me I want to make sure there are things for her to do. That's why I was thinking Ashville, maybe downtown, shopping and stuff.

    Yeah, Asheville.
At least visit the Grove Park Inn, at the end of your visit though.
Good area with lots for both of you.

    Brevard, NC:

    Has many accommodation options:
Holiday Inn Express centrally located to all the different recreation activities:
Scenic spectacular waterfalls may interest you near Brevard at the Dupont State Forest along with Mountain biking activity as well.

I was on the BRP last year Between May 11th & June 2nd. I found that the BRP was practically empty on weekdays and a bit busy on weekends. Bikers mostly taking it easy M-F but on the weekends there were some insane riders not really caring if you became ancillary damage. I found it odd that on the BRP, the cruiser/HD guys tended to ride much more sane than their BMW sport bikes counterparts If its your first trip to the BRP enjoy the slow pace.

Make sure you stop at the Linville, Gorge.

I'll be making the trip this year too on my way back from the Red River Gorge in Kentuckys Daniel Boone Nat Forest.

Peaks of Otter is closed - and I don't mean for the winter. They are trying to get new management in - but to my knowledge nothing as of yet. The folks who had the lease for the past ten years did not opt to renew.

As I understand the financial commitment to obtain the lease is very expensive.

Check www.tailofthedragon.com ...they have a BRP trip report and are also a good resource for riding in the Smokies, and of course the Tail aka Deals Gap.

Grove Park Inn in Asheville, go for breakfast even if you don't stay there. At one time they had an old car and motorcycle museum, don't know if it's still there.
