There is still storm damage that has not been repaired. Just go to the BRP home page and they tell ya all about it.

Winter closures are common- but I think we're also dealing with some leftover hurricane wash outs in the southern reaches of the BRP~ There was a thread here a while back detailing all the wash outs and land slides.

Google Blue Ridge Parkway and then click on the National Forest lnk and it will have specifics. These closures are due to hurricanes and will last for over a year.

Oh yeah, 300 miles of twisty fun. It was a great day.

Good luck with the cold, I am just getting over it.

I have had it for a while. I rode my bicycle the last two days of the year 60 miles so I could log 1000 since 9/1. I think I over did it since I was better on Wed than I am today. Oh well, at least I can watch Football for the rest of the weekend and not have to work, but I did start on my taxes today, maybe that is why I feel ill. :rofl

The GS will slip past every gate on only one side.

I've seen it for myself, lots of damage from the Hurricanes. I heard the number $17 million muttered by a Park Service employee.
Outside lanes of the Parkway completely gone. Looks to me that they'll have to cut further into the mountains to sit the road on firm bearing soil. There
are four washouts between Ashville and Marion, one really big washout just south of Linville Falls.
I've been told that there is a monster one just south of Asheville, but haven't snuk in there for a peek yet.

ALOT of timber down too. I'll be suprised if any is cleared by next season.... Doesn't seem like
they're even working on it. Just survey flags and core testing as of a couple of weeks ago.

Feels like mile after mile of abandoned post disaster emptiness. Wonderful place to visit now.

    Getting a touch cold though

The parts that are closed due to storm damage are avoidable, there are ways to get around those. Right now most of the brp (the good parts, anyways) are closed due to winter.

Hope these can hold everyone over......:1drink

Good luck. The BRP can be slow travel, and the penalties for speeding have gone through the roof. Besides, why would you WANT to blast through the parkway in a single day? IMO the best parts of the parkway are the relaxed pace, incredible scenery, and the luxury of having no particular agenda whenever I travel it. It is still one of my alltime favorite trips.

Standard '03 GS (w/ABS, not the sport). I have pimped it out a little since... you ride a yeller one too, don't you?
