Gramps, IIRC that was a proto-type built by fisher, the USA co. building bikes wih the Hyosung v2 engine
Moto-Cszyz GP bike. Designed in Portland, Oregon.
Who else, given their history of designing things for engineers to admire vs. riders to work on/pay for service on would try to sell a dirt bike that:
1. Has the frame effectively wrapped around the engine sides thus making access to the engine more complex than need be (frame always in your way).
2. Has a front sprocket that effectively requires an engine drop to change. I wonder if the same guy designed the airbox (and access to it..)?
3. Has a cable clutch yet will probably be priced north of a 525 EXC
4. Has crammed 10 lbs of engine internals and electronics into a 5lb space. You'd be lucky to be able to adjust the idle speed on that thing - even that might require needle nose pliers.
5. And 5 will get you 10 has Canbus or some other needless complexity onboard.
Coming from a former BMW rider, Bimmer's asthetic designs have gotten much better lately (1200S, 1200GS, Hp2), but their habit of desiging complex solutions in search of a problem or by engineers for engineers hasn't abated.
In the period following the great BMW airheads (simple, tough) they have forgotten that what makes for engineering idealism doesn't always jive with common sense.
If they want to take on KTM, buy Husky, throw some money and BMW decals at them, tell their own engineers they're persona non grata at Husky facilities and tell HUSKY to design the best RIDERS bike they can - within the KTM snack ($$) brackets.
The car dealers selling bikes thing is a whole other arguement...

In a design like this, with the swingarm axle through the countershaft, a normal clutch on the primary gearbox shaft would be in the way. Therefore the clutch is located at the very end of the crack. Where it turns faster than normally and has to put up with less torque than in a conventional engine. So it can be smaller as well. As you can see the countershaft is hollow. Item 10 is the swingarm axle, which goes straight through the countershaft. Removal of the swingarm looks like just as much work as the front wheel.
Item 5 is the frame, 11 the swingarm and 12 the front sprocket.

I'm not really sure how to read those drawings. Is that a 5 speed tranny and a single plate dry clutch?
It looks like a sort of circular brakelike clutch with 1 steelplate and two friction plates clamping around it, verry cool thinking, on the crank it has to cope with much less torque so is much lighter.
Ok this is a dumb idea. Clutch on the end of the crank? Hope they keep the rpms low, because it's going to be very difficult to balance a clutch pack perfectly. Yamaha did it in the 60's (CT1?) and quickly abandoned it when they wanted to actually get some rpms in their engines.
Every car and every BMW boxer and four in line have a clutch on the crank, so it can be done. But you are bloody right, because a clutch failure is what made Sascha give up last sunday.

Went to the G650 Launch in Scotland on saturday.
the bikes look good
the Xch is a cool looking dirt bike but a trail bike rather than an enduro bike as BMW call it - its too heavy. but for a trail bike id prefer a bigger tank 9.5lts under the seat with no obvious way of making it bigger. do bmw have a deal with expensive after maket accessorise companies to perfect the bikes they make?
the Xcountry looks a bit girly in the press pics but it is actually a cool looking bike proberbly the best of the three. designed as a road bike/scrambler - a good efort id say but tank size even more of a problem for this bike.
Xmoto - yep its a supermoto in an old fashioned kind of way - i think KTM are moving the supermoto thing on this year with the 690 and hopefuilly the duke next year.
I wonder if it'll be street legal or off road use only.... Here in Ontario getting an off road bike certified as street legal is very easy.. you don't even need blinkers on it..
your refering to the 650, we're all talkin about the 450...
BMW must really be ticked off at KTM for trying to steal the big Traillie market.
I don't understand why companies choose the most competivie place to break into a market.
Such as KTM in the 1000cc streat bike market. Failed
And now BMW first real dirt bike and they go right for the 450cc market. They will get their butts kicked.
At least BMW isn't aiming for the MX market, which is a mistake that Buell seems to want to make.
