Maybe it acts as a front-end spoiler to keep the front tire on the ground when you go real fast!!!
Mike I asked that question after reading many posts about vibrations @ 2,500 - 4,200 revs blah blah ... and writers responding that all sorts mods from handguards, screens, to bash plates are/might be the cause.
The positve of these forums is that you learn & consider a lot of info that adds to your own observations and knowledge, the negative - you have to trawl through pages of crap and sift it.
You obviously don't think the beak serves a purpose. I agree.
I was just wondering if there is any real reason for its existence & what the F8 would look like without it.
I have seen a picture of someone's F8GS with the beak removed. Can't say that I liked it. (Also can't recall where I saw it...it was some time ago. Try the UKGSer forum.)
Essentially, the upper fender boils down to stylistic feature. It seems to me that it is meant to replicate the high fenders indicative of off-road, dirt bikes. The lower fender is a necessity to minimize the amount of road debris and water that is thrown up by the front wheel.
I have seen someone's R-GS where the owner remotely mounted a radar detector under the upper beak. Interesting use of space.

I have a few nice farkles available from my F800GS. It only had 2500 miles. Most of the accessories had 400 miles or less. I thought it might be wise to post here since there aren't many non-new F800GS parts for sale and few look directly at that section for them.

Have abandoned ship and purchased a R1200GS so I will be focussing there for a while but still interested in getting rid of the beak on that so, I will check in regularly to see if there is a design genius on these forums.

Problem: On certain motorcycles, the front wheel quick-release axle may not have been manufactured to specifications. The quick-release axle might be of reduced wall thickness which, under severe loads (off-roading, for example), could cause the axle to break. This could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Correction: Dealers will replace the quick-release axle.
does BMW contact the owner if it needs replacing??
Yes. This only applied to bikes manufactured between 11 & 16 September 2008.

Is there a thread with torque specs for the 800GS?
Looking for the torque spec for the 2 bolts that bolt through the frame into the engine for installing the ADV-Spec crash guards.

I have a 2009 F650gs Twin, which is my second one this year. On the first bike I found that the gas tank had cracked on the fill side. Apparently they are cracking along the seam. My first bike was replaced, as no one had ever seen it before. I picked up the new bike 3 weeks ago. Now it too has a cracked gas tank. Neither of these bikes were dropped. It appears to be a defect in materials and/or design. Has anyone else seen this problem. At the international rally in Johnson City I found 11 other bikes with the same problem, so check your bikes......

I just inspected my tank, and ... I do not see any visible cracks.... so far...
I would think that replacing the tank would not be a fun job on these bikes...

I had a question before I ordered and had my e mail aswered straight away. I ordered them and they fit great, easy to install, look awesome etc.
Wildman, here's another thread to add to the ergos file, these risers were designed with the F800/650 with ABS in mind:
