Bmw F650gs

    Hi all,

    Need some advise on the above.
    Have been ponding on whether to get it or not and had many advise to go for the top of the range 1200GS.

    So the question is, which is good for daily communting and maybe a 1% chance of touring of less than 1000km.

    I pretty much convinced myself on the 650 due to the large savings I'll get, for where I am (Singapore) the 1200GS is about USD$12000 more, yes ridiculous right?

    So having heard most good reviews on the 650, any bad side of it?
    Also, is the 800 any better? again in terms of dollars and cents, it's about USD$4500 more here.

    I had a F650GS and I loved it. I am 6'2" and had no issues with the bike. If you look at my signature line you see a link to a AR fireroad ride. It was done on the 650, so that might give you a idea as to what the bike can do.
    The only reason that I sold the 650 was that I found a killer deal on a fully tricked out 1150GS. On the road, commuting the 650 was a bit more nimble but, as I am sure you know, on some distance runs the 1150 is a lot more comfortable.

    The 650 will be a perfect commuting ride for you. I have both a 1200 and 650. They both have their good and bad points. If I was looking at only commuting, and average speeds would be 70mph or less, 650 all the way.

    What he said. I also have both, and the 650 would be my first choice for local commuting.

    I had an '07 F650GS for a while (that is the single) and it is a great commuter and fireroad bike. The ABS saved my wife and I big time on a fireroad (crazy ass marmot wanted to play chicken).

    Gas mileage is spectacular, nice open aire stream accross your helmet and very manuverable. Also the best looking 650 single IMHO. Anything more than fireroads it can quickly get over its head.

    I am sure the new twin is better in every respect and might have a little more offroad prowess as well as be a better touring machine.

    I have an '03 F650GS and love it. I use it mainly for getting around in the mountains where I live and on the dirt roads of Baja it is superb. I am toying with the F800GS for longer runs. Oh, the 70mph on my 650 is not bad either....

    I bought a primo but used 2005 F650 GS as my "re-entry" bike after an almost 40 year absense. I REALLY wanted the R1200GS but figured it was too much bike since I wasn't even sure if I would like riding again. As it turns out, I loved riding and after about a year, I sold the F650GS and bought my 2006 R1200GS from a guy who took great care of it.
    I really liked the 650 but with ONE exception. It felt "buzzy" at freeway speeds (70-75mph). This is normal for a big single. The 650 was a much better "off-road" capable bike (IMHO) than my R1200GS. Much lighter and easier to handle.
    Anyway, since I always wanted a big Boxer, I got one and am happy I did. But to be honest, I use it as a road bike only with very little off pavement riding.

    You have already tipped you hat to the 650 if there is a lot of commuting. The water cooled twin will be better suited to a lot of stop and go than the oil cooled boxer motor. In traffic, the smaller bike would be a great choice, in my opinion.

    Heard from some peeps that the local agent(PML) is offering to clear stocks on their 650gs. as such, the prices are slashed by a few thousand...

    any info on that? what is the cost for this bike to be on the road?

    I don't think there is any doubt that BMW has hit a monster home run with the 650/800 twin series.

    In do feel that a separate forum is needed, merely by the thread count for this bike.

    I will start by saying I have been in Singapore and would like to move there myself. From what I know of it, I would go with the F650gs. It will maneuver well in town, it is cheaper, and can handle touring. i did a 700 mile trip last year through CO and UT on a rented F650 last year with no problem. I would guess your touring would be in Malaysia? From my travels there, the F650 would do great. Anything you lack on the minimal touring you may do, you will gain 10 fold in town. With that said, I just bought my F800GS and love it. It would outperform the 1200 in the city or on the dirt, but would still be more than what you need in town.

    Have fun, and go ride the thing up into Cameron Highlands and Tama Nagara Rainforest. I would love to have ridden it on a bike.

    Not sure about the "deal". However As I recall a Camery is about $70K in Singapore. That is about double the same in the US. THe US F800GS has a list price of $13,574 with the "standard package" (ABS, Clear Blinkers...) and a center stand. Not sure if that helps. Good luck.

    Is it difficult to get it through the lottery to get the usage permit or does the deal give you this with the bike when you buy it new? It is good for 10 years, right?

    This thread is about the 650gs twin right? In that case What would you f650gs twin owners say its a comfortable cruise speed for the bike? can the bike handle 80mph sustained on long rides? What about long term reliability? is the 650gs twin as reliable as the 650 gs single? Thanks.

    On a RTW ride - currently touring the U.S.
    80 mph cruising no problem, is it as reliable, no way. Keep reading on the forum and you will hear about the issues that people are having.

    Maybe in a few years when the bikes get sorted out better things will change. The single has been around mostly unchanged for a long time after all.
